Re: Cavalier Chronicle: Life After LeBron

After winning two in a row last week, the Cavaliers have now dropped their last five games despite more strong play from Antawn Jamison. The week began at home against Dallas, where Dirk Nowitzki put up an impressive 46 points, effectively overshadowing the 38 points Jamison contributed. Their inability to contain Dirk, particularly during the fourth quarter, ultimately cost the Cavaliers the game. This is the third time Cleveland has given up at least 40 points to an opposing player.

The bad fortune continued on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors. Cleveland came up just short of pulling out a victory as Jamison's last second shot would be blocked by Ed Davis for one of his five blocks on the day. Both teams had their fair share of offensive struggles excluding Jamison with 26 points, but in the end the Raptors were able to hold off Cleveland's second half comeback to secure the victory.

Friday saw the Cavaliers tally three double-doubles in Golden State, but unfortunately they struggled to stop David Lee and the Warrior offense. J.J. Hickson corralled a season-high 17 rebounds but only shot a paltry 33% (6-of-18) from the field totaling 15 points. It is clear that Cleveland is going to have to focus on building up their defense during their rebuilding stage if they want to return to contention.

DeRozan may be dealt
__________________________________________________

DeMar DeRozan | Raptors
__________________________________________________

Despite showing a marked improvement in his second year in the league, currently the hottest rumors around the league are all surrounding the Raptors' DeRozan. He is reportedly telling teammates that a "trade is done" although there have been no specifics released and the Raptors front office has not been reached for comment. We know the Timberwolves were initially rumored to be showing interest but now we're being told they have backed out. We'll keep you up to date on any new developments.

Clippers look to trade Gomes
__________________________________________________

Ryan Gomes | Clippers
__________________________________________________

With the breadth of young talent in Los Angeles hindering his playing time, Gomes has reportedly requested a trade. One team that could potentially be interested are the Raptors, who appear to be on the brink of moving DeMar DeRozan. Gomes has stated he would love to play in Toronto, but Clippers general manager Neil Olshey has yet to reveal whether they plan to trade the small forward or not.

Mason trying to remain upbeat
__________________________________________________

Roger Mason | Knicks
__________________________________________________

The journeyman Mason, no stranger to swapping teams, has been effected enough by his inconsistent playing time. Now with trade rumors surfacing, he's hopeful that he'll land in a place that can provide him more opportunity to play. One possible trade we've heard has him going to Minnesota in exchange for newly-acquired point guard Ishmael Smith, as they need someone to fill in for the injured Wesley Johnson. No word yet about the Knicks' interest in such a deal, however.

What about Carlos?
__________________________________________________

Carlos Delfino | Bucks
__________________________________________________

Milwaukee is supposedly looking to move the streaky bench contributor and early reports have Detroit and New Orleans as potential suitors. No word yet about what the Bucks would expect in return but Delfino could certainly be an impact player off the bench for a team on the bubble. Given Milwaukee's early success this season, we would ultimately be surprised if a trade actually comes to fruition.

Perkins on way out?
__________________________________________________

Kendrick Perkins | Celtics
__________________________________________________

Just a week after announcing that he'd like to test the free agent market after this season, the Boston center is already being named as a potential trade piece this February. So far no reports about who might be interested in his services or what the Celtics would be asking in return, but we bet any potential trade partner would at least like to discuss the possibility of an extension with Perkins, unless they want to risk him being a half season rental.

Cavs to move another veteran?
__________________________________________________

Antawn Jamison | Cavaliers
__________________________________________________

Off to one of the hottest starts of his career, Jamison has been the subject of trade speculation all season. Recently, it's been reported that the Cavaliers are calling teams to gauge what they might be able to get in return. We've heard the Kings contacted GM Ron Arens offering center Samuel Dalembert but the Cavaliers declined. Reportedly Cleveland is pushing for a trade with fringe competitor Houston, but no word about their asking price as of yet.

Scouting Report
The Virginia small forward has already drawn comparisons to Gerald Wallace due to his tenacity on the court. Has demonstrated tremendous ability to drive to the rim. Solid shooter from long-range, should be a contributor from opening day. Won't be a team leader on the court but plays his role nicely. Could stand to improve his rebounding but scouts believe he has one of the highest ceilings in the draft.

Re: Cavalier Chronicle: Life After LeBron

This week the Cavaliers faced the daunting task of the remaining four games of their five game west coast road trip, all against playoff contenders. It started off in Phoenix with them allowing Vince Carter to put up 40 points with 14 rebounds in what would amount to an 11-point Suns victory. Antawn Jamison had a double-double of his own, adding 31 points and 11 boards, and Ramon Sessions added 26 points of his own but it would not be enough for them to earn the victory.

On Tuesday, the Cavaliers found themselves in Los Angeles with the seemingly impossible task of beating the Lakers. However, thanks perhaps in part to Kobe Bryant's inflamed elbow as well as a poor overall shooting day for the Lakers, Cleveland found themselves the benefactor of a mid-season upset. Young power forward J.J. Hickson turned in a find performance with 20 points and 13 rebounds and sixth man Alonzo Gee added 21 points of his own from the bench.

The good luck would not last long as the Cavaliers ended up on the losing end of a 107-92 game in Utah. Another solid performance from Jamison (28 points) could not overpower the balanced attack by the Jazz. Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson each turned in a double-double and the team shot 56% from the field overall. Sessions struggled in particular for Cleveland, shooting making only two of his thirteen shots.

Cleveland squared off against Denver on Saturday playing on zero days rest, and it showed. The Cavaliers were visibly fatigued and shot an embarrassing 38% as a team. Sessions dished out 17 assists but the team just looked fatigued on the floor. Carmelo Anthony added 30 points en route to a double-double in the win, while Chauncey Billups earned a double-double of his own.

Things don't get any easier for the Cavaliers next week, as they seek revenge against Carter and the Suns before facing division rivals Milwaukee and Chicago. If the losses keep coming, expect a trade sooner rather than later.

Balkman could be on the move
__________________________________________________

Renaldo Balkman | Nuggets
__________________________________________________

In recent weeks the Denver Nuggets have reportedly been contacting teams in an effort to dangle Balkman as trade bait. According to Philadelphia GM Ed Stefanski, the Nuggets are asking for too much in return. Charlotte has also publicly backed out of negotiations for his services. Unless Denver lowers their asking price, we predict he'll be staying put.

Graham unhappy
__________________________________________________

Joey Graham | Cavaliers
__________________________________________________

Disgruntled by his lack of playing time, Graham has made it known that he would like to be traded. Graham, who lost his starting spot in early December, appears to be a hot commodity thanks to his defensive capabilities. Early reports indicate that Phoenix and New Jersey could be potential suitors. The Nets, in fact, have already offered Travis Outlaw according to some rumors. At this point in Cleveland's disappointing season we would not be surprised to see such a move.

Pietrus on the block
__________________________________________________

Mickael Pietrus | Suns
__________________________________________________

In what would be a weird twist of fate, Pietrus could soon find himself on his way back to Orlando. At least, that's what recent trade grumblings would have you believe. We feel such a deal would be unlikely, especially since the Magic have little the Suns would be interested and Pietrus' deal is set to expire after this season. We'd wager that Phoenix would prefer the expiring contract over adding any other pieces.

Hinrich on way out?
__________________________________________________

Kirk Hinrich | Wizards
__________________________________________________

With John Wall off to a Rookie of the Year worthy start to the season, the Wizards are growing less and less attached to the veteran point guard. The odds have Hinrich going to a playoff contender with a need at point guard if he's moved at all, so potential suitors could be Atlanta or Miami. We've also heard that Oklahoma City might be an outside contender, as they look to boost the veteran presence on their bench.

Already being considered a scrawnier Deron Williams, Stokes has scouts foaming at the mouth. Has excellent playmaking instincts, some have said it's like he has eyes in the back of his head. Great jump shooter and does a nice job of anticipating while on defense. Needs to improve his ability to finish at the basket so he can become a drive-and-kick threat. Still young and raw when it comes to his abilities as a leader but NBA scouts hope he'll grow into the role.

Re: Cavalier Chronicle: Life After LeBron

As if having the third worst record in the league wasn't already enough, the Cavaliers now find themselves with injuries to a few key players. Wednesday saw Antawn Jamison suffer a sprained toe and then Friday's game claimed both J.J. Hickson and Jamario Moon with ailments. Fortunately, neither of the three should miss more than two weeks, if that, but at this point they need all the help they can get.

Sessions posted great numbers against his former team but the Cavs still came up short
Injuries could also spoil potential trades that Cleveland may be looking to make. Hickson has been cleared to play through the injury but Byron Scott has decided to play it safe him. "Back injuries can be tricky, we would rather be extra cautious and let him heal completely than risk it becoming a recurring ailment all season," he told reporters. Jamison, who missed the game against Milwaukee, will play through his injury moving forward.

Against Phoenix, Jamison contributed 24 points in his 37 minutes on the court prior to his third quarter departure and Hickson added his eighth double-double of the season. In the end, the tandem of Steve Nash and Vince Carter was too much for Cleveland so they lost to the Suns for the second time in as many weeks. Ramon Sessions did have a well-rounded game with 14 points, 7 boards, and 6 assists.

The Cavaliers were able to remain competitive against Milwaukee all the way up until the fourth quarter. Cleveland entered the final quarter down by seven before the Bucks buried them with 37 points in the period, winning by 18. Due to Jamison being inactive, Hickson remained in the game despite incurring an injury and played 40 minutes. Sessions was the story of the game though for the Cavaliers as he put up one of his best performances of the season against his former team. "Whenever I go up against the Bucks or the Timberwolves there's always that added incentive to perform well, you know," said Sessions. "I've got to show them what they gave up on."

Saturday, with Hickson and Moon inactive and an ailing Jamison seeing limited minutes, it was all bad for the Cavaliers. The Bulls got off to a great start and sent Cleveland to the locker room down by 27 at the half. Shooting an embarrassing 31.8%, nobody from the Cavaliers stepped up to take control of the team. Chicago simply dominated at both ends of the floor, with Carlos Boozer and Derrick Rose each posting double-double performances.

The Cavs hope to prevent another extended losing streak next week, with their best chance of doing so coming on Monday in New Jersey. After that they face Boston and the streaking Nuggets. Who knows, perhaps Cleveland will pull off another upset like they recently did against the Lakers and Magic, respectively.

Mavericks deny rumors
__________________________________________________

J.J. Barea | Mavericks
__________________________________________________

The Mavericks, who've got great depth in the backcourt, have been under-performing by Mark Cuban's standards so far this season. It's expected that Dallas could make a trade to shake things up and Barea has been a name thrown around in discussions. We anticipate that if they do in fact make a move, it'll be in an attempts to bring in a veteran scorer off the bench. No word yet on potential suitors but the Raptors we're told have made it known they are interested.

Unhappy McGrady spurs rumors
__________________________________________________

Tracy McGrady | Pistons

Earlier in the week, T-Mac publicly complained about the team and coaching in Detroit. As a result, he has been included in the latest round of trade rumors. The addition of McGrady is not having the effect the team anticipated, so they could attempt to trade him for draft picks or young project players. One interesting scenario could have him going to Dallas, where he would most likely get another chance to make it out of the first round of the playoffs if they can turn their season around. We'll see if anything comes to fruition.
