Hired, but Not What He Signed Up For

Life happens sometimes. There's no other way to put it. See, Norfolk is a fine town in a good area, with Hampton and Newport News to the north along the bay and Virginia Beach about 45 minutes to the east (at least in off season). It's not a big city. It's not a small town. No, the whole area has its own charm, and it's an area that supports its historically black colleges and universities very seriously.

But a strange thing happened on the way to Guy West's professorship at Norfolk State University. West had already gone through the interview ringer of call backs and let downs at other schools, but when he got the call from NSU saying, "You have the job," he packed his bags and cleared out of his apartment in record time. But maybe he didn't need to pack all his books.

The Dean welcomed him with open arms and offered to walk West personally to his office. Astonished at the reaching out, West accepted and the Dean began to talk about expectations. About meetings with boosters. About scheduling practices. About the need to build a sustainable program and looking for "diamonds in the rough." It dawned on West slowly: this wasn't the Dean he was talking to, but the Athletic Director. And when he realized what job he had been given,

"Hang on, I don't know anything about basketball. I haven't played since 7th grade!"

"You don't have to play to coach," replied the AD, "but I'll tell you what. Word gets around. You moved some of the faculty more in ten minutes than others have been able to do in their whole career. And c'mon! You're smart, you'll figure it out."

So begins life's curious prodding of a man, Guy West, towards the career he was meant for. This is a story of one of the all time greats, or maybe it's only a story of someone making a terrible mistake.

Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Gym

    Season 1 Preseason Outlook

The first months weren't what Professor, no, Coach, West expected. No time to learn the ropes, and no time to call other people to try and pick their brain. First, there was bouncing between gyms watching high schoolers duke it out for colleges' attention. NSU enters the season with three scholarships to give out. At least sitting down and talking to recruits is something West knows how to do. He's still struggling to figure everything else out.

What else is there to say? Coach West can talk a good talk. But it's going to take some time around basketball before some of his other skills, like teaching and discipline, begin to translate to the hardwood. For now, NSU has provided him with some assistants that can pick up where he's deficient.

Thanks for the positive feedback from both you and duece. Coming from a Football Manager 20XX background (see: http://loswonderkids.com/community/t...attarodag-red/), I tend to write dynasties a little differently. Instead of plodding game by game, I write after every few games. It lets me play the game more and get info to readers faster.

Thus, my philosophy can be broken down as: if it's an important game, I'll write about it. If it's an unimportant game but something important happens, I'll mention it. I won't play every game but my goal is to play most all of them. Unfortunatelly, I won't have all the screen grabbing tools that I had with FM, so I'll have to make do with tables and vivid descriptions.

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

With the first game of the season on this horizon, a local reporter got a chance to ask coach West a few questions.

R: How are you feeling going into your first ever game coaching.
West: I'm taking it in stride. It's a big deal for me, but it's one game in a long season. Our players have been practicing hard and working to get ready.

R: Memphis is going to be a huge test though, what is your game plan? How do you plan to get your inside game involved when their players are far faster and better at cutting off the passing lanes?
West: Err...get the ball in the basket?

R: Ha, that's a good place to start. Any worries about the fact that the tournament is being played on Memphis' home floor?

                  West: Oh crap.

                  R: Wait, you didn't know?

                  West: Umm...

R: Look, I'm going to give you another chance to answer this question. But just this once.
West: Thanks. We're just going to stick to our game plan, keep our heads down, and hopefully the results will take care of themselves. It's going to be an uphill battle.

R: And your game plan is to get the ball in the basket?
West: If you can't do that, you can't win.

                    1 assist
                    7 TOs

All it took was a 11 point spurt. A thunderous ally-oop, 3 three pointers, and three straight turnovers by the opposing team. Coach West can take away the fact that he jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, and he can cherish the memory of being up 32-30 late in the first half. But for the last four minutes of the first half it looked like Memphis was still playing their midnight madness scrimmage. O'Quinn did his best to be an inside presence, but in the end Norfolk State's lack of shooting ability, coupled with its penchant for turning the ball over and putting up weak shots, was its undoing.

One exchange under the basket was most telling. O'Quinn had a shot at a layup, but it missed off the rim. Zeyphr beat a number of other tigers to get the offensive board, only to miss a layup, get his shot blocked, and get his shot blocked again. One fast break pass later and Witherspoon hits another wide open 3 pointer from well behind the line.

West: "Well, there is such a thing as moral victories. But I'm not sure what we can take away from this game. The moment Memphis started a run they poured it on and on and we just stopped playing. This game isn't the end of the world, but we'll need to go back to the drawing board...and maybe a hoops clinic. You can't give up at the first sign of adversity, and that's what a lot of our team did tonight."

No word on how West's team will react to their coach's public criticism.

Norfolk State next faces Maine in the losers bracket of the 2K Classic.

In a battle of strength vs weakness, Maine overcame their lack of size and ability to defend the middle by spreading the floor and out shooting Norfolk State's perimeter players. Singleton notches the player of the game award for hitting 3 three pointers in the second half to help Maine pull away.

The game started out well for Norfolk State, where in the first half they led by as many as 14. However, once Coach West subbed out his front line to give them a breather Maine started to build momentum. By the time Zephyr and O'Quinn got back on the floor, Maine had made it a 6 point game.

West: "Well, our boys rocketed out in front but we still have some retooling to do. We struggled to hit jump shots to break their zone in the second half, and our fast break never materialized because they were content to drop back four men after every shot. It's still early in the season, but I thought we had this one. We just need to play a full game."

While West may have survived a post game interview by parroting some strategy failings his assistant coaches pointed out, he's going to have to do something more to motivate his team going forward.

Norfolk State finishes 0-2 in the tournament, and next looks to turn things around against Robert Morris (1-0).

I can always dream. At least it was even for most of the 2nd half until Maine put on a good run. I can live with that. I'm still trying to figure out who can do what on my roster and where they like to shoot on the floor.

lol Loving the interview. Tough start to the season though hope Coach West can get his first win soon.

First home game of the season, vs. Robert Morris

R: So Coach West, you leave the tournament with a disappointing 0-2 record. Any plans for turning it around here at your home opener?

West: Of course the plan's to turn it around. What are we supposed to do, give up?

R: But surely the defeats had some effect on your players.

West: You're right, it did. My coaches ran them in practice, then ran them again, then ran them some more. So we had to break them down, now's the time to build them back up.

R: Does that mean you're feeling pretty confident tonight as slight underdogs against Robert Morris?

West: Everyone walks into the game confident, both us and them. But we can't just walk in and be happy with jumping to an early lead like against Memphis or Maine. Tonight's about starting strong and finishing the game.

                              * Thompson was only effective after O'Quinn hit the bench, and even then he was a defensive liability the whole game.

When Marcus Tamares drew a foul after a monstrous dunk over the entire Robert Morris front line, everyone in the building could read the writing on the wall. The rout was on. Norfolk State grabbed its first victory of the season in convincing fashion, using its superior height and athletic ability to out muscle and out scrap an obviously overwhelmed Robert Morris. The difference was so monumental that the final score line does not entirely reflect how close this game was. Coach West cleared his bench at the beginning of the second half. It wasn't close at all, and he knew it.

                              West:
"Tonight was a step. Now we're beginning to be the team we can be. Our starters got to a fast start, and our bench kept up the pressure through the second half. It's great to see that level of commitment in such a lopsided game."
