Re: Minnesota Timberwolves - 2011 Chronicles & Beyond

JANUARY 2014

Minnesota Timberwolves
Target Center - Minneapolis, MN
Overall Record: 31-16
January Record: 9-4
Overall: 6th (+1)
Power Ranking: 1st (+5)
Division Rank: 2nd (--)
Conference Rank: 2nd (--)
Team Chemistry: 38% (+9%)

As December closed out in good fortune, the new year would begin in the same way, with a win against the San Antonio Spurs down in Texas, 101-80. Jonny Flynn would lead the way with 24 points and 9 assists while Tyrus Thomas had an 18-12 double-double on the night, along with 6 blocks. Flynn would do a great job in shutting down the Spurs star point guard Brandon Jennings, who only had 11 points and 4 assists as his team certainly struggled at home. Unfortunately after spending some time down in Texas, the team would lose on the road against Dallas, 95-107. It was Dirk Nowitzki who did them in, still playing hard at 35 years old, scoring 31 with 9 rebounds, while Danilo Gallinari had 20 points of his own. For Minny it was Anthony Randolph who led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The road trip continued with a recovery victory against a great Houston team, 92-85, as the close game would go down to the final minutes, where Wesley Johnson and his 18 points would help lead the team to victory late in the game.

Another win would come back at home, against Dallas in their second match-up in their last three games. This time, Minnesota would walk out victorious, 97-122, in a good stomping off the Mavericks, led by Jonny Flynn who had 35 points, and Anthony Randolph with 34 points, as the T'Wolves played scorching hot in the fourth quarter scoring 38 points and holding the Mavs to 20. This time, Dirk Nowitzki found himself with only 15 points on the night. But with a long four day break ahead of them, the team would fall short in their first game back on the road in Memphis, losing 91-105. Rudy Gay was the main factor of their downfall, dropping 28 points with 11 rebounds, while it was Randolph who led the T'Wolves with a quite 20 points. Thankfully, Minnesota would recover the next day with a win at home against the Washington Wizards, 100-123, as once again the T'Wolves exploded in the fourth quarter to achieve the big margin of victory, as it was both Randolph and Flynn leading the team in statistics once again.

Three days later a road game against the Los Angeles Lakers wouldn't end well, with a 95-104 result. It was the Lakers' three-headed beast of Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and of course, Kobe Bryant, which did the young Timberwolves in. Those three would combine for 70 points and 25 rebounds, while Flynn had a 24-12 night in a losing effort. The team would come into Oklahoma City however, a steal a 95-93 victory during the evening on national television, as it was a point guard battle, with Flynn finishing with 31 and Russell Westbrook finishing with 25. But in the end, the Timberwolves would continue their undefeated record against their rivals in not only the Northwest Division, but for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Two more wins would come later in the week, first 101-105 at home against the New York Knicks. Flynn continued to play great, scoring 25 while Wesley Johnson had 20 points and 9 rebounds. For New York, Amar'e Stoudamire played hard with 26 points and 9 rebounds, while point guard Aaron Brooks had 26 as well. Next, the Timberwolves completely shut down the New Orleans Hornets in Louisiana, 105-75, as Chris Paul was dominated all night, finishing with only 5 points and 2 assists, and his counter-part showed his worth, as Flynn had 34 points and 6 assists on the night. A surprising loss was next against one of the worst teams in the West, the Utah Jazz, as Minny lost 89-101 on the road at the hands of the starters in Utah, led by Caron Butler who had 18 points and 6 assists. Flynn would had 32 while the rest of the team would struggle to get much going offensively.

But at least two final wins would come as the first month of 2014 was closing out, first at home against the Atlanta Hawks, 94-110. This time six players for Minnesota finished in double-digit scoring, notably Al Harrington climbing up with 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Flynn continues to dominate with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists. Joe Johnson would lead the Hawks with 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists in a real losing effort from the rest of his team. The final victim for Minnesota would be the Charlotte Bobcats, who allowed seven Timberwolves to finish in double-digit scoring, once again with Harrington and now Mo Williams jumping into the mix, while Wesley Johnson led the team with 21 points and 8 rebounds. For Charlotte, it would be a good night from Kevin Love who returned once again to the Target Center, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie shooting guard Chuck Cage continues to impress many, scoring 24 points of his own.

League News for the Month of January
- In the Eastern Conference, LeBron James would take the Player of the Week award four times for January, while Deron Williams would take it home once for Brooklyn. In the West, it was a little more spread out, with Carmelo Anthony taking it twice, while Kevin Durant, Brand Jennings, and Russell Westbrook would all compete for one award each.
- Not surprisingly, LeBron James would win the Player of the Month award for the East, and Carmelo Anthony would win the award in the West.
- The Rookies of the Month would be two new youngsters to receive the award for the first time, Chuck Cage, the new shooting guard in Charlotte, and Terry Garner out of San Antonio.
- Midway throughout the month, the Washington Wizards and Miami Heat would agree to a deal, which sent point guard Louis Williams down to the championship city of Miami, while veteran guard Mike Miller and rookie 7'3" center Lawrence Blackman.

Re: Minnesota Timberwolves - 2011 Chronicles & Beyond

FEBRUARY 2014

Minnesota Timberwolves
Target Center - Minneapolis, MN
Overall Record: 36-22
February Record: 5-6
Overall: 7th (-1)
Power Ranking: 3rd (-2)
Division Rank: 2nd (--)
Conference Rank: 3rd (-1)
Team Chemistry: 32% (-6%)

The Timberwolves would make a few headlines as the month of February started up, when they decided to make their first, and presumably at that time final trade of the year. It would involve themselves and the New Orleans Hornets, who were ironically the first match-up for one another in the month of February. The trade would send young point guard Marvin Freeman and his 1yr+2/$1.58M contract, small forward Dee Fulton and his 1yr+2/$1.84M contract, as well as Minnesota's 2015 2nd-Round draft pick, all in exchange for point guard Martin Newton and his 1yr+2/$1.16M contract, as well as small forward Quincy Pondexter and his 1yr/$2.22M contract. Both teams felt they would benefit from the trade, and for Minnesota, it would feature the loss of a great back-up point guard, but Freeman felt misused this season and was clamoring for a trade. His agent would pull through for him, as he now finds himself behind the West's point guard representative, while the Timberwolves receive a capable point guard who knows his place, as well as a better small forward with more physical attributes in Pondexter.

Neither would play in the first game of February for Minnesota, which as previously mentioned was against the New Orleans Hornets. None of the players a part of the transaction would take part in the action, but the Timberwolves not surprisingly took down the Hornets at home, 100-105. Jonny Flynn led scoring with 28 points and 9 assists, while Wesley Johnson had 26 points and 8 rebounds. The next game was another victory, this time against the Phoenix Suns, 109-91 in Arizona. Carmelo Anthony as usual led the home team in scoring with 28 in a losing effort, while Flynn had 24 points but his team would come out on top. Unfortunately the Timberwolves would lose their next four games, starting with a 99-117 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Wilson Chandler would unload 31 points towards his team's victory, along with 10 rebounds, while Flynn led the T'Wolves with 29 and 11 assists. Next, the Dallas Mavericks upset the Timberwolves in the Target Center, 102-100, as point guard George Hill was nearly wide open for the buzzer-beating winner to silence the Minnesota crowd. He would finish with 17 points, tied for the team's lead, while Tyrus Thomas led the T'Wolves with 18 and 9 rebounds.

Unfortunately the team would fail to recover in a game against the Sacramento Kings in California, where they would lose in an offensive battle 111-122, as Marcus Thornton led his Kings with 25 points while and Flynn for the T'Wolves had 23 points, but only 4 assists, despite the rest of the roster being able to successfully make their own shot, in the process playing poor defense. Next in their second to last game before the All-Star break, the team couldn't handle the heat in Oakland, losing to the Warriors 87-117. Monta Ellis played well for the home team, finishing with a leading 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Wesley Johnson led the T'Wolves with 18 points and 7 rebounds. At least the team would recover with a victory rematch against the Kings, winning at home 102-117 as the All-Star break was just to come into being.

Now the time will be taken to recognize Jonny Flynn as the only Timberwolves player to be named to the Western Conference all-star team. He is the first Minnesota player to be named for the event since 2007 when Kevin Garnett played in his final All-Star game as a member of the Timberwolves. It would be Flynn's first All-Star nomination, and would surely be memorable, as he played an absurd 40 minutes in the game, finishing with 13 points and 9 assists, helping lead the West to the 92-129 victory. His story would receive much attention in the media, especially when the front office revealed their frustration over the decision to have their all-star player take part in the most minutes of the game, surely exposing him to the risk of injury in a game which doesn't even count in the long run.

But all was well in the end, as the Timberwolves began the post-All-Star break session with a win against the Los Angeles Clippers in Minneapolis, 81-113. The team completely dominated a Clippers team which looks better on paper, but couldn't pull it out this contest and have been struggling all season. Flynn had a 20-11 night while Anthony Randolph finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, helping his team re-start on the right foot. The very next day was a toughie, as the team couldn't handle the Spurs in San Antonio, losing 85-101. The Spurs would successfully shut down the high-octane offense produced by the Timberwolves, holding only three players to double-digit scoring, while Tony Parker led the Spurs with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Next was another loss, this time in Washington D.C. against the Wizards who have seemed to have the T'Wolves number all season long. This would be an 89-100 loss, led by their sensation John Wall who finished with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 15 assists, while Wesley Johnson had 18 points and 8 rebounds. Finally the team would close out February with a victory against the Los Angeles Lakers, 72-111, as the team had a much better time than in their previous match-up of shutting down the Big Three of Los Angeles, Bynum, Gasol, and Bryant, while Flynn led the onslaught with 32 points and 9 assists.

PG. Jonny Flynn (22.7 PPG; 8.7 APG; .519 FG%; 35.5 MPG)

PF. Anthony Randolph (15.6 PPG; 8.3 RPG; 1.1 SPG; 1.7 BPG; .484 FG%; 28.4 MPG)
PF. Tyrus Thomas (13.8 PPG; 7.4 RPG; 1.3 SPG; 2.2 BPG; .505 FG%; 30.9 MPG)
SG. Landry Fields (9.9 PPG; 4.9 RPG; .484 FG%; 29.0 MPG)

League News for the Month of February
- The starters for this season's Eastern Conference All-Stars would be Derrick Rose (CHI; 4th), Dwyane Wade (MIA; 9th), LeBron James (MIA; 10th), Amar'e Stoudamire (NY; 9th) and Dwight Howard (ORL; 8th), a group of players who have seen many all-star games together as of recent. In the Western Conference, the starters would be Chris Paul (NO; 6th), Tyreke Evans (SAC; 3rd), Kevin Durant (OKC; 5th), Dirk Nowitzki (DAL; 11th), and Andrew Bynum (LAL; 3rd).
- For the first time since 2007 when Kevin Garnett was named to yet another All-Star game, the first Timberwolves player in six years would be named to the 2014 All-Star Game, as point guard Jonny Flynn would earn his first appearance of his career, certainly a well-deserved honor as Flynn continues to receive more recognition for his talents this year.
- The game itself saw a much more dominating performance by the West than the previous year, as they defeated the East, 92-129. Carmelo Anthony and Tyreke Evans would each lead the team with 18 points, while Kevin Durant would receive the game's MVP award putting up 18 points with 10 rebounds, showing his real effort put into the game.
- February, as usual, featured a few trades, starting early in the month with a deal struck between Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets. They would send a new back-up point guard to Brooklyn in Kyle Lowry for Al-Farouq Marsh and Travis Outlaw.
- The very next day the Nets made another deal for a veteran point guard, acquiring an aging Andre Miller and a 2015 1st-Round draft pick from the Portland Trailblazers in exchange for rookie power forward Frank Willis.
- The final trade of the year was certainly no blockbuster, as the Brooklyn Nets continued their busy trade deadline deals, sending 26-year old small forward Damion Jones to the Cleveland Cavaliers for their 2015 2nd-Round draft pick and a 2015 2nd-Round draft pick from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Re: Minnesota Timberwolves - 2011 Chronicles & Beyond

MARCH-APRIL 2014

Minnesota Timberwolves
Target Center - Minneapolis, MN
Overall Record: 49-33
March-April Record: 13-11
Overall: 6th (+1)
Power Ranking: 7th (-4)
Division Rank: 2nd (--)
Conference Rank: T-4th (-1)
Team Chemistry: 31% (-1%)

March was arguably the best month for the Timberwolves, starting with a victory at home against the Chicago Bulls, 86-89. No player was specifically impressive, but Tyrus Thomas managed 19 points and 9 rebounds leading his team to victory, while Derrick Rose had a measly 19 points as his team couldn't cut the mustard in the finish. Unfortunately the next two games were losses, starting with a disappointing 86-88 effort on the road in Orlando, as young power forward Cody Cummings finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds, as Jonny Flynn led the Timberwolves with 19 points and 6 assists, but had his potential buzzer-beating shot blocked in the end by Andre Iguodala. Next was an even tougher loss at home, 114-112 against the Phoenix Suns who took the Timberwolves to overtime in the Target Center and were able to scrap out the victory as another potential game-winning shot from the T'Wolves wouldn't fall, at least making it to the basket this game. Al Harrington really played great, finishing with a season-high 20 points, but it was the overall effort from Carmelo Anthony which would propel the Suns to victory, as he finished with 34 points along with 11 rebounds.

The very next day the team was able to defeat the Dallas Mavericks in Texas, 127-105, even though Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points. Dallas' defense was ill-faded that night, allowing Flynn to put up 35 points along with 9 assists to lead his team to victory. Too bad the team couldn't keep the streak up, dropping the next road game in Brooklyn to the Nets, 108-123, with Egor Chugainov finishing with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists, while Anthony Randolph had 22 points and 13 rebounds. Next the team was back home against the Indiana Pacers, whom they defeated fairly soundly, 104-117, led by Tyrus Thomas who had a career-high 32 points at home, along with 9 rebounds. After that was a road win against the Detroit Pistons, 98-94, led by Flynn with 31 points and 7 assists.

The Timberwolves would drop their next two however, first against the Atlanta Hawks in a certainly poor offensive performance, finishing with a total of only 71 points compared to the 94 scored by the Hawks. They were led by veteran point guard Chauncy Billups who had 19 points and 6 assists, while their small forward Jason Hardaway had 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Charlotte Bobcats hosted the T'Wolves next, taking down the visiting team 91-108, as Kevin Love had a great night with 29 points and 18 rebounds, as he continued to lead his Bobcats eventually to best record in the Eastern Conference. Wesley Johnson had the hot hand that evening with 27 points and 8 rebounds, but his effort certainly wouldn't be enough to counter the well-balanced team of Charlotte.

However, the team's next game would certainly awaken any sleeping fans of the Timberwolves, who were able to witness a thrilling overtime win at home against the always formidable and never-lacking haters, Miami Heat. Both teams would play very tight in the fourth quarter, but the Timberwolves were more ready for more play, scoring 10 points in overtime leading to a final score of 111, while Miami only scored 4 points in the extra five minutes to finish with 105 points. This great effort was led by Jonny Flynn who had 28 points and 8 assists, while LeBron James certainly played great, scoring 43 with 10 rebounds in the losing effort.

Not surprisingly the team would get pretty hot after that, eventually winning their next five games and in the mean time securing a spot in this season's NBA playoffs. First was a 99-114 win at home against the Toronto Raptors, as Anthony Randolph led the scoring this time with 28 points with 6 rebounds. After that was a 94-109 victory against the lowly Denver Nuggets, as Flynn had a 24-12 night. Following that, the Utah Jazz were the next victims in a road game in Minneapolis, losing 82-116, continuing the boost the confidence of the maturing Timberwolves team, who with that dominating victory would clinch their first playoff appearance in the past 10 years, when the 2003-04 team would lose in the Western Conference Finals 4-2, certainly a franchise changing moment in their history. But this was a completely different Timberwolves team with a completely different staff, determined on creating their own history for an organization which seems to have little relevance since its' incarnation.

Following the official declaration of their playoff berth, the Timberwolves celebrated with a win at home against another division foe, the Portland Trailblazers, 103-111, as Randolph had 26 points and 8 rebounds and Wesley Johnson finished with 23 points and 7 rebounds. After that was the final Timberwolves victory for the great month of March, featuring a 106-115 result at home against the Golden State Warriors. Flynn led the way with 30 points to close out the Warriors while they received a 21 point, 13 assist night from Stephen Curry. Unfortunately the team traveled halfway across the nation to Phoenix for a road game which resulted in a loss, 98-116, as Ty Lawson had a career-high night scoring 41 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists, while for Minnesota, back-up point guard Martin Newton was able to squeak out a surprising 20 point performance in 17 minutes of play.

April started with a win against the Portland Trailblazers in Oregon, 116-108, with Flynn scoring 36 points and 9 assists, while the highest scoring player in the game would be Portland's German-sensation Helmut Klein who had 39 points on the night, another night featuring a career-high scoring finish from an opposing player of Minnesota, even though his effort this time wouldn't get his team the worthless win for a lowly Portland team. However, the next day would be a road loss against the Los Angeles Clippers, 103-108, as the Timberwolves gave up the lead in the fourth quarter and Eric Gordon was able to lead his Clippers back to victory, finishing with 21 points while Blake Griffin had 27 points and 8 rebounds. This game saw Landry Fields play great, scoring 25 points with 5 rebounds of his own. The slumps of April would continue with a loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder, 86-125, as the Western Conference leading Thunder completely dominated their division rivals, who wouldn't be able to take the lead in the Northwest Division as the season's winded out. This game saw Kevin Durant put up 43 points with 7 rebounds, while Anthony Randolph for Minnesota had only 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Timberwolves would continue April with a strange schedule, as their next two games were against the two teams they just played against, starting with a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers, who came in and defeated the T'Wolves once again, 98-81. Randolph continued to try hard, scoring 26 points, but Griffin would continue great play with 31 points and 15 rebounds to help charge his team towards the eventual victory. Next was another re-match, a game many expected the T'Wolves to win, but they would continue to struggle at home, losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-109. Tyrus Thomas tried his hand at leading the team in scoring with 21 points, but the defense from Minnesota was no better than before, allowing Durant to score an incredible 43 points once again, surely setting off fumes for head coach Kurt Rambis as his team was now a week away from the playoffs and didn't seem to have their heads in the game.

He would seem to drill things into their heads, as they came back with an 87-83 road win against the Los Angeles Lakers, who weren't going to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when they finished with four less wins then the Lakers would this season, in what certainly would be a disappointing way to end the season, as the team continued struggles without legendary head coach Phil Jackson, and reports had been circulating of Kobe Bryant's ability to create drama in the locker room, especially concerning his new head coach. The Timberwolves would play their final two games of the regular season with a loss on the road against the Sacramento Kings, who were also a playoff team this year, 98-114, while the final game saw the Timberwolves achieve victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, 77-108.

At the end of the day, the Timberwolves weren't able to secure themselves a higher seed in the playoffs, disappointing considering they had been second in the Western Conference for a few months this season, but nonetheless everyone associated with the franchise is excited for the Timberwolves first playoff run in a long time, and have acquired the fifth seed, set to take on the fourth seed Houston Rockets in the first round.

Player Statistics - For the End of the Season

- In March, the Eastern Conference Player of the Week awards would go to LeBron James and John Wall twice, while Derrick Rose took it home once. In the West, it would be Tyreke Evans twice, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, and Stephen Curry once. For the final month of April, both Wall and Durant would take the award home the final three weeks of the season.
- Both months of March and April would see John Wall receiving the Player of the Month award in the East, while Tyreke Evans received it for March in the West, and Kevin Durant won it for April.
- The final two months of the season saw plenty of firings for coaches, starting early in March with Portland's decision to let go to coach Nate McMillan and hiring new coach Timmy Payton.
- The Denver Nuggets were the next team, firing coach Jim O'Brien and giving the new job to veteran coach Scott Skiles.
- Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, announced his retirement for the end of the season, while the team named young coach Benjamin Law as their next head coach for the next season.
- The Cleveland Cavaliers fired coach Allen Yates and hire assistant coach Martin Ball to the job.
- Finally, the New Orleans Hornets let go of their coach in early April, saying goodbye to Troy Barber and hiring former Nuggets coach Jim O'Brien.
- For the Timberwolves, shooting guard Wesley Johnson would be named to his second honor as a member of the All-Defensive First Team, while forward/center Tyrus Thomas was honored to be named to his first defensive award, as member of the All-Defensive Second Team, certainly proving the improvement of Minnesota's defensive ability over the past few seasons.

Re: Minnesota Timberwolves - 2011 Chronicles & Beyond

Aye here's the deal. Updates are gonna slow down for a bit because I'm moving to a different house in about a week, and I have been working more, and having intrest in some other things that seem to take up more time that usual, probably because I am too lazy to write right now, every day. My sleep schedule is ****ed up. So yeah, I still trying to figure out a template at least for each playoff game, and once I have that figured out, I still have to write Game 1, and after that things should flow much more smoothly since I can write things faster and play more.
