The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: NBA Courtside Weekly

lakersheaderc.jpg
nbaweekly.jpg
2010-11 Power Rankings: Week 1

RK TEAMREC*COMMENT
1
Heat47-35After the "Decision" and the party on the beach, now it's time for Wade & Co. to deliver.
2
Celtics50-32Doc Rivers was screaming at the top of his lungs that with Kendrick Perkins in the lineup, L.A. wouldn't have won the championship. After all that, why trade him?
3
Spurs50-32Duncan, Ginobili and Parker to all have minute caps put on them by Pop. Whatever keeps them away from injuries, in other words, playing it safe.
4
Lakers57-25There was nothing going to stop Kobe Bryant from beating the Celtics. Slay one giant and now another emerges, this time from down south.
5
Bulls41-41New coach, new system and some veteran leadership has pushed the Bulls to the front of the pact.
6
Magic59-23They brought back Turkoglu after letting him go a year before and bring in Gilbert Arenas. Now is Dwight convinced they are comitted to winning?
7
Mavericks55-27The dark horse in the Western Conference this year and the only team that can match the Lakers size.
8
Hornets37-45With a healthy Chris Paul and new coach Monty Williams, The Big Easy is dancing and singing again to a new tune.
9
Trail Blazers50-32Hopefully they finally get something out of Oden with no injuries and Brandon Roys knees hold up. There's always LaMarcus Aldridge and free agent Wesley Matthews.
10
76ers27-55A smart hire in Doug Collins to lead a young talented team. They could be the surprise of the East.
11
Nuggets53-29After an early exit last year, George Karl returns to the sidelines and Carmelo is in New York. The Nuggets got younger and athletic with one move.
12
Grizzlies40-42They got everyone in Memphis talking about playoffs. A very deep team out in the West with great leadership.
13
Pacers32-50Many think this is the year the Pacers climb over the hump and get back inot the playoffs. Granger hitting all-star form.
14
Thunder50-32Last years first round matchup with the Lakers only helped the Thunder grow up quicker. Getting Kendrick Perkins and Nazr Mohammed a huge plus.
15
Cavaliers61-21Owner Dan Gilbert promised a championship to Cleveland before LeBron gets one in Miami. Anyone tell Gilbert his only shot a winning a championship is the very person he says will not get one first
16
Rockets42-40Missed out on the playoffs, but still finished with a winning record. Got rid of Brooks and have Martin for a whole season. With Yao back and hopefully healthy Rockets can make a run in the West.
17
Clippers29-53Their main attraction is their only attraction...Blake Griffin. Let the Blake Show begin, until his contract runs out and he ends up across the hall.
18
Suns54-28It's not very often you see a team that was 2 wins away from the Finals revamp and bolster their roster like the Suns have. Let's just hope age doesn't effect them.
19
Kings25-57Will DeMarcus Cousins help or hurt Tyreke Evans? Will the Kings end up moving down south?
20
Bucks46-36After last season's first round matchup with the Hawks, the Bucks have everyone talking about contending. Let's see if Jennings can avoid the sophomore jinx.
21
Hawks53-29Is Joe Johnson worth $120 million over 6 years? Marvin Williams still has 3 years at $24 million? Larry Drew is more expendable with only $1 million.
22
Jazz53-29For the first time in over 21 years, the Jazz begin the season without Jerry Sloan as their coach. New coach Tyrone Corbin has his hands full with a young squad.
23
Knicks29-53Even with Stoudemire, Billups and Anthony, the Knicks can't climb out of the cellar just yet.
24
Bobcats44-38Nice job with the team last year, now under his first full year as owner, how do the Bobcats handle the pressure of Michael Jordan around them all the time.
25
Wizards26-56Got rid of Arenas so that John Wall can grow and blossom. Andray Blatche, Javale McGee, Nick Young, the Wizards got some athletic youth movement coming through.
26
Nets12-70Draft lottery didn't work out so well for them as they thought, but it did land them Deron Williams, their point guard for the possible future, if he decides to stay.
27
Raptors40-42They felt just as slighted as the Cavs did in the off season, but were able to get something for Chris Bosh, now only what to do with it?
28
Warriors26-56With Curry and Ellis running the backcourt, the Warriors offense is a vital threat to the West.
29
Pistons27-55Under new ownership, should be interesting. Does Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince stay until the deadline or are their days in Motown numbered?
30
Timberwolves15-67Not a surprise to find them here. It gets mighty lonely at the bottom and they are just getting use to it.

The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: Lakers 92, Rockets 77

lakersheaderc.jpg
77Houston Rockets Dynasty.png @ Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty.png92
Lakers begin new season the way the finished in June, with a victory
LOS ANGELES, CA - Many of the Lakers are use to opening night ring ceremonies and championship banners hoisted up into the rafters. It's become more like tradition and those who get their first taste of it have a craving for more. The Lakers opened the 2010-11 season against the Houston Rockets, but before they started this season they still had a little celebrating to do from last year. Last June, the Lakers undoubtedly won their biggest championship of the franchises history, beating their greatest rivals the Boston Celtics in one of the the best NBA Finals played. Avenging their 2008 loss in the Finals to the Celtics, the Lakers didn't play the prettiest of game seven performances, but they fought, clawed, and were not to be denied their place in history. It was the fifth championship for Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher and the tenth overall championship as a coach for Phil Jackson giving him the record for most championships by a head coach in professional sports. After being presented their championship rings, which had an engraving of each players face on their ring, the Lakers then led by Ron Artest raised the franchises sixteenth banner and then focused on the game at hand...

Their opponents on opening night, a familiar opening night opponent, the Houston Rockets. Since 1991 these two teams had played three season openers against each other with the Lakers winning two out of the three. It was a night to welcome back Andrew Bynum, who had off season knee surgery on his torn meniscus. It was also the Laker debuts for Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff who they had all signed during the summer in free agency. The Rockets were also welcoming back several players into the fold, most noticeably center Yao Ming and guard Kevin Martin. Yao, who had sat out all of last season due to a foot injury that he suffered against the Lakers back in the second round of the 2008 playoffs was on a minute limitation according to coach Rick Adelman, but nothing concrete. The Rockets finished up 42-40 last season going fourth in the southwest division and missing the playoffs, but the team never did falter and give up which led the NBA acknowledging former point guard Aaron Brooks as the league's Most Improved Player last year. The Rockets traded Brooks to the Suns for backup guard Goran Dragic and also sent Shane Battier and Ishmael Smith to the Memphis Grizzlies for Hasheem Thabeet.

The start of the game was delayed for a few minutes as the officials wanted to wait until the smoke from the festivities parted. As soon the game began, the Lakers looked to have been in mid season form already while the Rockets looked like a team that was still trying to figure each other out. It was evident from the first few possessions, but what was more evident was the aggressiveness of Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant came out with a sense of purpose and struck first in the game. Coming into the season Phil Jackson had expressed his desire to monitor the minutes that Bryant played this season, briefly explained why, "Well we have been to three straight Finals which means that we haven't ended our season until the end of June the past three years. From that time until we meet for the opening of training camp, our players get 2? 3? months off, while other players for other teams have had double that time, so I want to be able to monitor his minutes as well as Fisher's and both of them know that our focus isn't on the number of minutes a players, but his contributions. Well Kobe contributed I would think leading the way for the Lakers with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and hitting a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.
Shannon Brown and Lamar Odom each added 12 points apiece while Pau Gasol had an off night offensively scoring 11 points, but grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 6 assists.

The Houston Rockets were having their problems early on, but were able to settle things down towards the end of the first quarter. The Lakers defense really bothered the Rockets especially from the perimeter. The one player out there that didn't seem to be concerned with the Lakers tough pressured defense was Kevin Martin. Martin led the Rockets with a game high 35 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. No other Houston Rocket scored in double-figures. Terrence Williams was close adding 9 points and 7 rebounds, but on a very weak and terrible shooting night, 3-16 from the field. In his return to the court in nearly a year and a half, Yao Ming played 35 minutes, scored only 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, but gets very questionable calls.

The Lakers were not that better from the line, but their style of play meant from player #1 - player #2 a dribble hand off or high screen and role and the Lakers were hitting that mid range jumper with consistency and wound up with a 92-77 victory over a sellout crowd of over 18,997. The Lakers new acquisitions didn't make that big an impact in this game, but for the guys who are learning the offensive and defensive structure during training camp, this were very limited to what we could do with them.

After the game, Kobe was asked about the ceremony, "I thought the Lakers did a fabulous job with the way they set up for our ring and banner presentation. This one to me is my most memorable finals because it was the Lakers and Celtics, it went all the way to seven games and was decided late in the fourth quarter. Just the way every game should be.". Ron Artest, being presented with his first championship ring was speechless and running around giving high fives to the kids in the first row. "I don't think I could describe the emotion that I felt when I looked down at it.". So with the first home game out of the way, the Lakers have the next two days off before flying to Phoenix friday morning for the game against the Suns that night.

The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: Suns 110, Lakers 103

Lakers don't make key plays in final minutes, Suns win home opener
PHOENIX, AZ - Just five months ago in the US Airways Center, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers were celebrating their Western Conference championship while Steve Nash and the Suns were getting ready to go on vacation. As the Lakers went onto win an NBA title, the Suns five months has been filled with a roster makeover. Amar'e Stoudemire left for free agency as did energy player Louis Amundson. Leandro Barbosa was traded to Toronto for Hedo Turkoglu who was then traded back to the Orlando Magic with Jason Richardson and Earl Clark for Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat. Backup point guard Goran Dragic was dealt to the Houston Rockets for Aaron Brooks. Hakim Warrick and Josh Childress signed as free agents and before you knew it the Suns roster was completely revamped. Only Robin Lopez, Steve Nash, Jared Dudley, Grant Hill and Channing Frye remain from last years team. The transition has not been a very easy one as the Suns struggled through the pre season and then were embarrassed on opening night by the Portland Trail Blazers. They were able to survive a close game with the Jazz before taking on the Lakers last night in their home opener.

The first half was a closely contested game between the two teams. Kobe Bryant scored eight points in the first quarter and had the Lakers holding a 24-21 lead. The second quarter was back and forth until the Suns surged on a small run that gave them a 53-51 lead going into halftime. The Suns came out aggressive to start the third quarter and before the Lakers knew it, they were down 71-57 halfway through. The Lakers were able to cut the lead down to eight going into the fourth quarter at 83-75. The Lakers in the fourth quarter attacked the basket on almost every play, catching the Suns defense a step to late and getting to the free throw line early and often. Unfortunately for the Lakers they were not able to capitalize missing free throws at crucial times. The Lakers cut the lead to one point, 104-103 on Pau Gasol's two free throws with a minute to go in the game and made a key defensive stop on the Suns next possession. Securing the rebound, the Lakers got the ball into the hands of Kobe Bryant. Bryant crossed over and drove baseline and went up for a layup to give the Lakers the lead, but at the last moment Robin Lopez came over to challenge the shot and forced Kobe to double pump and come up short on the shot. The Lakers ended up fouling the Suns and Steve Nash went to the line and converted giving the Suns a 110-103 victory over the Lakers.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with a game high 28 points and dished out 6 assists while hitting 13-15 from the free throw line, but came up limping in the third quarter after a collision with Suns center Robin Lopez. Andrew Bynum added 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds while both Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom had 12 points apiece. The Lakers shot the ball from the field much better then they did the other night against the Rockets, hitting 36-72 (50%) last night, but were the opposite from the free throw line (28-39). "Free throws cost us the game tonight. We did our job and got to the line, but then we didn't knock them down at the times we really needed them. We didn't focus and it cost us a game," said Lamar Odom who was 8-12 from the line himself missing three free throws in the first half. Guard Shannon Brown who had 12 points played a key part in the Lakers fourth quarter rally, but when it counted he couldn't knock down the free throws going 2-5 in the quarter.

The Suns who seemed to be more insync last night then on opening night were led by Grant Hill with 21 points and 10 rebounds hitting 11-12 free throws in the game. Last years Most Improved Player, Aaron Brooks off the bench had 17 points and 7 assists while Steve Nash put in 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns. "I thought we played better team basketball tonight. I thought we moved the ball very well and got it to guys in their spots and when we saw a lane we didn't hesitate and the defense rotated and we were able to get a better look off a pass," said Suns head coach Alvin Gentry. Hakim Warrick and Vince Carter, both new faces to the Suns each had 16 points apiece as the Suns offense kicked in to high gear over the last two games. After scoring only 75 points against the Trail Blazers, the Suns have averaged 113.5 points in the last two games. "We know that we can put points up on the board, but its on the defensive end we have to make a bigger commitment. We should've learned from last year that when you need stops it's your defense that is going to provide that," said Steve Nash after the game.

The Lakers will next take on the Golden State Warriors this Sunday on Halloween and won't have to wait long for another matchup with the Suns who come to STAPLES the following week.

Game notes: Kobe Bryant suffered back spasms after taking a hit from Suns center Robin Lopez in the third quarter. Kobe briefly left the game, but returned in the fourth quarter. While he says his back is very sore and it's difficult to move side to side Kobe said he will play against Golden State.

The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: Warriors 112, Lakers 98

Lakers sluggish play continues as young Warriors get first win of the season
LOS ANGELES, CA - It's only been the first week of the NBA season, but already after one week questions are starting to rise when it comes to the Lakers. The soap opera that is the Lakers has decided it wanted to get a jump start and begin immediately without any hype surrounding its inevitable appearance. Usually it wouldn't show up til at least February, but here at the end of October? After such an aggressive and powerful manner in which they defeated the Houston Rockets on opening night, the Lakers have either hit the reverse button, been hit with a case of amnesia or a flaw in their team has been discovered. Now yes Kobe Bryant is playing despite having back spasms that occurred during the Phoenix game, but the Lakers got dealt with another blow early in last night's game against Golden State. Derek Fisher came up limping after being fouled hard and it led to Fish being taken into the locker room where x-rays were taken and it was confirmed that his tailbone was bruised. A slight injury, one that will not require him to miss any time, but his activity out on the court would've been just as good if he had not played the rest of the game. When it was all said and done, the Warriors stood on the court after the game arms up in the air, high fives all around and group hugs as they had just defeated the NBA champions on their own home floor 112-98 and did so with a very effective fourth quarter.

The Lakers struggled out the gate early, but were able to sustain the Warriors hot shooting and drives to the basket. They were able to contain both of Golden State's starting backcourt duo of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. Kobe Bryant, back spasms and all led the Lakers with 34 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, but his shooting from the field was negative spot for the Lakers, going 12-34 from the field. Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol both added 24 points apiece, but even with the Lakers big three combining 82 points the Lakers were still not able to make a big enough push to win the game. They had their chances though, pulling to within two points at 72-70 but were unsuccessful on their next two offensive trips down the court before fouling the Warriors and putting them at the line where they made the Lakers pay. The scariest stat of the night was the Lakers 18 turnovers as a team that led to many Warriors fast break points, which was in the Warriors favor 24-2.

Forward Dorell Wright had a team high 24 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Warriors while power forward free agent David Lee put up 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The backcourt duo of Curry and Ellis were less than themselves last night. Ellis had only 16 points on 6-23 shooting while Curry had 13 points and 11 assists on 5-13 shooting. "There are going to be some games where myself and Monta are not hitting shots or we just have a hard time getting them to go down like tonight, so it's important that we have guys out there that can knock down shots and not be afraid to make plays for themselves if we are not having a good night," said Stephen Curry after the game. He also commented on the way the Lakers played. "I can imagine their legs aren't under them ofcourse. I think that once they get their legs back they will be the team they've been the last three years." The Warriors did outrebound the Lakers not by a wide margin, but the total number was shocking, 60-48. Udoh and Biedrins each had 9 rebounds apiece for the Warriors who got their first victory of the year last night.
