2010-11 Power Rankings: Week 2

RK TEAM REC COMMENT
1
Heat 3-0
So far Heat have shown all the hype was worth it, especially with opening night win over Boston.
2
Spurs 2-0 Spurs start out strong during the first week, hampered by minor injuries to bench.
3
Bulls 2-0 Derrick Rose seems to be a different player under Tom Thibadeau whose defense first approach is rubbing off.
4
Trail Blazers 3-0 Portland off to a quick start with some very impressive wins including a 107-75 victory opening night against the Suns.
5
Nuggets 3-0 Who would've thought after trading Carmelo and Chauncey that the Nuggets would be as competitive as they were this week?
6
Mavericks 2-0 Dirk gets the Mavericks off to a usual good start. Addition of Chandler could be the key difference.
7
Nets 2-0 Not a typo, the Nets are indeed 2-0 after the first week of the season. Deron Williams getting adjusted seems to be focused again.
8
Celtics 2-1 Losing to the Heat on opening night didn't put the Celtics into panic mode. Winning the last two with a rematch against the Heat coming up.
9
Pacers 2-1 A chance to surprise some people early on and get some much needed victories is just what the Pacers are hoping for.
10
Cavaliers 2-1 Would anyone have thought that the Cleveland would be in the top 10 this year at all? Well for this week at least we made it so.
11
Suns 2-1 Ended the week with a great home opener against the defending champs. Could easily dethrone the Lakers in the Pacific.
12
Hawks 2-1 Larry Drew has the Hawks continuing to improve during his first year as heach coach, but is Joe Johnson going to live up to expectations?
13
Timberwolves 2-1 Just like the Cavaliers, the Timberwolves didn't crack the top 20 last year so for their play this week, we cut them some slack.
14
Magic 1-1 With Turkoglu back and the acquisitation of Arenas, are the Magic trying to tell Howard something ?
15
Lakers 1-1 A fresh victory opening night over Houston, turned into a slugfest against Phoenix on Friday. Kobe's numbers are going to have to equal Lakers win.
16
Clippers 1-1 The Clippers unleashed Blake Griffin onto the league and can only hope for once management sees a star in the marking.
17
Hornets 1-2 Chris Paul under first year coach Monty Williams hopes to get back to the playoffs and develop the Hornets into contenders.
18
Grizzlies 1-2 A struggle out of the gate was expected. They got the champs next.
19
Kings 1-2 Not so bad a showing in the first week. Matchup with the Lakers headlines their week this week.
20
Knicks 1-2 New York fans didn't expect this, neither did Carmelo. A big fish in a little pond now.
21
Rockets 1-2 Kevin Martin was impressive opening night with 34 points against the Lakers, involving teammates along the way.
22
Bobcats 1-2 Michael Jordan's first full season as owner of the Bobcats. He wouldn't possibly think of another comeback would he?
23
Pistons 1-2 It's gonna be a struggle for the Pistons this year. Could Kuester be first coach on the hot seat?
24
Thunder 0-2 Not exactly what the Thunder were expecting after such a good pre season, but still time to turn it around.
25
76ers 0-3 Nothing going right so far for Doug Collins and his young 76er's, but he'll fight through for them.
26
Jazz 0-2 The Jazz are going to have establish a new idtentity now that Sloan has left the bench and organization is what he cane to pick up.
27
Warriors 0-2 Warriors taking on the champs to try to get first win of the season. Curry and Ellis backcourt might be a problem for the oppositions guards.
28
Bucks 0-3 Still very early to write off the Bucks who after their coach Scott Skiles can get effort on any given night.
29
Wizards 0-2 The nucleus of John Wall, Andray Blatche and Javale McGee does give Wizard fans a bright future to look forward to.
30
Raptors 0-2 This should be a place the Raptors should get use to. Not much to look forward to unless they make a major move.

The Lakers are in the midst of a two game losing streak as are the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers are dealing with injuries to their backcourt (Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher) and are looking to Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol to lead the way. The Grizzlies after a strong finish last year have playoff hopes this season. An off season trade with the Rockets saw Shane Battier return to Memphis where he began his career as the Grizzlies parted ways with Hasheem Thabeet.

Lakers unable again to control tempo of game, lose third straight in a row
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Lakers have had their ups and downs during the course of a grueling regular season and the demands that is called upon, but the Lakers are also one of the very rare teams that has to endure the effects of a losing streak. For the first time in three years the Lakers suffered losing three consecutive games since Pau Gasol was traded to the Lakers back in February of 2008. Last night at STAPLES, the Lakers played host to the young and vibrant Memphis Grizzlies who have share of failures coming here to play, but last night there seemed to be a different pep in their step. The Grizzlies finished up last season with a strong performance going 40-42 last year with their hopes set high on this season and the future.

Forward Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 21 points on 10-13 shooting from the field while grabbing 3 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists. Tony Allen also added 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Zach Randolph, who last year became the second Grizzlies player to be selected to the all-star team had a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Randolph, who just a few years ago was deemed a high risk pickup after his early years and trouble as a member of the Trail Blazers had made a strong effort to change that perception of himself after he was traded from Portland to the Clippers and then to the Knicks before ending up in Memphis. "When I got traded to New York I think that was when I had hit the low point of my career. I had lost my passion for the game and suddenly coming to work everyday was something I wanted to avoid," said Randolph. "Coming here to Memphis it made me want to start over fresh. I wanted to start from the beginning and one of my goals was to be an all-star and I was able to reach that goal with the help of my teammates and my coaches and the fans." One thing that really helped the Grizzlies maintain their advantage in the second half over the Lakers was their ability to take care of the ball as the Grizzlies recorded only two turnovers the entire game and had the advantage in second chance points over the Lakers, 20-2.

Kobe Bryant despite battling back spasms led the Lakers with 30 points and dished out 6 assists on 11-21 shooting from the field. It didn't look as if his back was an issue during the game because Kobe had no problem changing direction. Andrew Bynum added 19 points and 9 rebounds and a game high 5 block shots. "I'm not quite sure where the problem lies as far as us not being able to put teams away. We obviously are dealing with some minor injuries to Fish and Kobe, but we need other players then to step up and take on some added responsibility to get the job done," said head coach Phil Jackson after the game. The Lakers had not lost three consecutive games since March of 2010, but dropping three straight after winning on opening night against the teams they've played has to be a cause for concern.

The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: Kings 101, Lakers 75

Lakers hit longest losing streak in four years, Bryant challenges team
SACRAMENTO, CA - It's not so often that you hear about the woe tales of the Lakers unless it has something to do with budding superstars at each others throats, but this is probably far more serious. The Lakers looked as if they were going to all, but sleepwalk through the regular season after their opening night performance over the Houston Rockets, but since then they have had a streak that has eluded them for years now...A four game losing streak. For the first time since they acquired Pau Gasol the Lakers are looking down at their first significant losing streak that very well now has caught the attention of the front office, especially Mitch Kupchak. It also has got the attention of one Kobe Bryant. "I'm not going through something like this again. This isn't easy (trying to accomplish our goal), but if this isn't the number one thing on their minds in that locker room then we have a serious problem. I don't care if you unhappy about the minutes you're playing, the number of shots you're getting, if we aren't winning, then changes have to be made. At the end of the day this is bullsh!t." Kobe's words did not fall upon deaf ears and his coach seemed to agree with him. "Our core group of players are back from last year. As we have to incorporate the new guys into our system, I am very unhappy with the simple execution that our core players have not been able to display these past few games." It doesn't help that both Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher are suffering and playing through minor back injuries, but as Kobe put it, if you can't walk then you don't play. "If anyone has the right to sit out a game with an injury I would think I'm at the top of that list. Incase anyone seems to forget, see this finger (indicating his right index finger), I broke this two years ago. I can choose to have surgery and miss half the season, but I'm not about to miss when I don't have to."

We'll see if what Kobe had to say has any reaction on the court from his teammates following a dreadful 101-75 whooping by the Sacramento Kings who as well as the Lakers came into the game with a three game losing streak. It looked like the Lakers were seemingly at the level of putting together a game from start to finish, trailing only by one point, 24-23 at the end of the first quarter. But the Kings heated up and the Lakers faulted and allowed the Kings to outscore them 77-52 for the rest of the game. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 22 points (8-25 from the field) and 6 rebounds, Pau Gasol added 18 points and a very low 3 rebounds while forward Ron Artest went scoreless (0-10 from the field) in 36 minutes on the court. It wasn't even close for the Lakers who were outscored in bench points (57-19 in Sacramento's favor), second chance points (10-6 in favor of Sacramento), points in the paint (48-24 again in Kings favor) and fast break points (14-2). Infact the Lakers didn't win one statistical category in the entire game, with both teams having 16 assists.

Marcus Thornton who came over from New Orleans off the bench had a game high 30 points for Sacramento and guard Tyreke Evans added 18 points while rookie DeMarcus Cousins put up a double double 10 points, 10 rebounds.

The Legend of Kobe Bryant 2: Lakers 108, Raptors 78

Lakers end 4 game losing skid despite Bryant not being 100 percent
LOS ANGELES, CA - After losing four consecutive games it is nice to finally be able to walk off the court knowing that you played a full complete game even though it wasn't up to expectations, the result was probably the only thing that meant any real meaning. It had alot of meaning last night as the Lakers ended their season long four game losing streak with a 108-78 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The Lakers (2-4) were called to step up by co-captain Kobe Bryant after the loss to Sacramento and one player quick to respond was backup guard Shannon Brown who led the Lakers with a career high 28 points on 12-15 shooting.Lamar Odom added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Pau Gasol also posted a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Kobe Bryant had his lowest scoring output of the season with 13 points.

The Raptors (1-4) who were coming off an embarrassing loss to the Utah Jazz the other night did stay within striking distance of the Lakers until the fourth quarter where the Lakers pulled away from them. Leandro Barbosa led the Raptors with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists hitting 10-10 from the free throw line. James Johnson added 17 points and point guard Jose Calderon contributed with 15 points and 6 assists.
