The top half of Big West has made giant strides and it won't be a surprise if any of them can beat middle teams from power and major conferences on a good day.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE ADVANCES AS UC RIVERSIDE FALLS
Matadors meet the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the NIT Round of 8

Mar. 21, Irvine CA - Cal State Northridge continued its quest in the NIT with a 70-53 thumping of TCU. However, UC Riverside failed to make it an all-big East quaterfinals after falling to Oklahoma State, 66-56, later in the afternoon.

The Matadors led at the half, 32-27, and were really in no danger as they routed the Horned Frogs in their battle at the boards 34-20. A 13-3 run midway in the second half sealed the victory for the Big West season champions.

Bobby Joe Parks was the high point man for the Matadors with a game high 17 points to earn him the Player of the Game honors. Lorenzo Paez added 12 while Trevor Simms had a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds. DeWitt Maynard and W.B. Andrews led the Horned Frogs with 12 apiece.

It was almost the same story later in the day. Senior point guard Mark Locklier went into early foul trouble and from thereon the Cowboys took advantage against the hapless Highlanders. Though the Cowboys took the half at 34-25, the Highlanders came within striking distance at 40-37 after a 12-4 run. But that was the closest they could get as Noah Tinsley, together with Alan O’Hara and Nile Garrity, took over the game for the Cowboys.

Player of the Game O’Hara led all scorers with 18 points, including 4 triples. Garrity and Tinsley finished with 15 and 10 respectively for the Cowboys. Smush Haynes and Buster Saunders combined for 24 rebounds as they routed the Highlanders off the boards 33-23. Graduating senior Frank Derozan was the high point man for the Highlanders while Orlando Rodgers added 10.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE LOSES STEAM, BOWS OUT OF NIT
Cowboys defeat the tough Matadors in a close game, 92-83

Mar. 23, Irvine CA - Cal State Northridge succumbed to Oklahoma State and ended its dream run in the NIT Regional. The Cowboys defeated the Matadors 92-83 in an uptempo and high-scoring game. The Matadors lost steam after coming within striking distance, 85-83, with 50 seconds left in the ballgame.

The Matadors employed their pressing defense, something they didn’t do in their previous games against New Mexico and TCU, and jumped to an early 14-1 lead. It didn’t last long, Buster Saunders and Alan O’Hara went on fire and combined to wrest the lead for the Cowboys ending the half at 45-41. It was nip and tuck from thereon with the lead changing hands 5 times until Patrick Garrity, who was at the bench most of time in the first half with foul troubles, made it a 5-point game at 85-80 with 1:15 remaining. However, Emeka Barrett buried a 3-pointer from the right baseline to pull the Matadors within 2, 85-83, time down to 50.6 seconds. The Cowboys didn’t waste any time in the return play as Garrity was left open in a left elbow for the clincher.

Saunders was high-point man for the Cowboys with 20 points and was named Player of the Game. O’Hara and Deji Spong added 16 and 13 respectively while Smush Haynes and Noah Tinsley, who dished out a game high 10 assists, contributed 11 apiece. Trevor Simms led the Matadors with a game high 24 points while Barrett finished with 19. Bobby Joe Parks, who have been starting in lieu of the injured Tarick Hoskin, and Lorenzo Paez had 12 and 10 respectively.

NEVIL BOBIK COMMITS, BRINGS EXCITEMENT BACK TO RIVERSIDE
Nine 3-star recruits sign up led by Ross Crites of Cal State Northridge

Apr 15, Riverside CA - Two weeks of intense recruiting finally paid off for Coach Raymond Rose and UC Riverside as 6’11 forward Nevil Bobik committed to wear the Highlanders jersey next season. Initially Rose was looking at a point guard but changed plans after the Highlanders failed to make the Tournament Finals. Rose wanted to go big next season as has been their past Conference Championships and bring the glory back to Riverside.

Earlier Rose signed in 2-star Shaddean Burnett, a 6’9 forward from Anaheim and was aiming at Brendon Terry, a 6’1 point guard from Modesto. He found instead an unsigned 3-star recruit from Visalla who is big and with considerable potentials. Bobik, one of the nine 3-star recruits in the Big West, will be a good contender and may battle it out with Orlando Rodgers for a starting spot next season.

Conference champion Cal State Northridge has the highest ranked recruit in Ross Crites, a 6’4 strong forward from Compton. A second 3-star recruit is Donte’ Atchinson, a 6’1 shooting guard from Garden Grove.

Tournament champion Cal State Fullerton has the most number of 3-star recruits with three led by guards, 6’5 Rashad Singleton from Compton and 6’3 Dez Cannizzario from Lancaster. The 3rd is unranked Art Palacios, a 6’7 rebounding forward from Pasadena.

Cal Poly with an almost intact lineup next season received the commitment of 3-point artist T.J. Blankson, a 6’3 shooting guard from Moreno Valley. High on the ranking list is Long Beach State’s 6’2 shooting guard David Guinn from Lake Forest, who will somehow find his way to a starting role next season with all five starters gone. Last but not the least is UC Irvine’s Pierre Barlow, a 6’6 strong forward from Inglewood.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

Have to take a permanent leave with this legacy (and my Rutgers as well),
my old and trusty PS3 has gone dead (hopefully not for long).

In an attempt to revive the system,
unfortunately the hard disk had been reset
and formatted thus erasing all files in it.

It has been a long ride, we will meet again.
