Game 1: Nevada @ Sacramento State
Nov 8, 2008

Hornets Upset Nevada 77-69 in Season Opener

Freshman Andre Souchu dunks in the first half for 2 of his 12 pts

(Sacramento, CA) The Sacramento State Hornets started off the season in impressive fashion, defeating Nevada 77-69 in their home opener. The Hornets were led by freshman SF Lavelle Keita's 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Senior Loren Leith added 19, while 4-star freshman phenom Andre Souchu came off the bench to contribute 12 points.

The Hornets nearly led from start to finish, briefly falling behind by 1 with 3:54 remaining in the game. Sacramento State was aggressive on the boards, outrebounding Nevada 32-22, led by freshman PF Raphael Rios' 12. The Hornets also were efficient at the charity stripe (a sore spot for last year's squad), netting 20 of 24. Sacramento State overcame a foul-plagued game by freshman C Kammron Ravello, who picked up 2 fouls in the game's first 5 minutes, then picked up his third almost immediately starting the 2nd half. He still managed to score 7 points and grab 4 rebounds in only 6 minutes of play.

Player of the Game Lavelle Keita commented on his spectacular debut: "No disrespect to the other freshmen on this team, but I got tired of hearing I was the 3rd best player in the recruiting class. Then in training camp, the coaching staff wanted to completely change my shooting motion. I know how to shoot and score, and I proved that tonight."

Re: The Other Coach K -- A Yearbook Legacy (CH 2K8)

For the few following this thread , you shouldn't expect to see full recaps for every game like in the post up above. I definitely don't plan on doing one for each game. However, when time permits, I will recap a few games that I consider important. I think beating Nevada & the fact it was our home opener warranted the effort.

Recruiting Update

Recruiting is going okay so far this season. Next season, we'll be without senior SG Loren Leath. Ideally, we'd like to sign a SG plus a PG (although having 3 returning next season may make it difficult). And if we can identify another quality big man at PF, we'd definitely be interested.

I've identified a speedy regional PG (A- speed, C+ hands) that is our #1 target. He's not even close to committing to anyone, which is one big reason why I'm aggressively targeting him and have already offered him one of our 3 available scholarships. There was an impressive 3-star Mr. Basketball SG from Oregon that we visited, but we pulled our scholarship offer after Oregon offered theirs (especially because we were miles behind and his first priority was playing close to home).

The local crop of SGs isn't very impressive, at least those I feel we have a legitimate shot at landing. So I've expanded the search to the regional level.

Our #1 Recruiting Target

This is an old photo. After a few home visits from Coach K, we've moved up to #1 on his list with a 68% interest level.

Re: The Other Coach K -- A Yearbook Legacy (CH 2K8)

This squad is a whole lot more fun on the court than last season's. I may end up simming a few less games than I was planning, which of course will slow down the progress of this legacy even more.

I wish I had the time to play & post more, but there probably won't be any more updates until next weekend. Sorry...

this is solid, i know the hardships you have of recruiting especially from my report on here where i couldnt pull in more than a 2* i believe. I dont know how you pulled in 4* must be that polish in you

Thanks! Yeah, I've probably played or simmed through the first season of at least a dozen legacies, & I never pulled in a 4-star recruit before. In fact, I wouldn't have even taken a chance except for the fact that he was a Muni recruit, so visits were cheap.

Recruiting's not that tough if your team's in California and you use all your points toward charisma. You just have to accept that there are some 3 & even 2-star recruits that you're not going to get, and be willing to pick from the leftovers. Fortunately for me, there's been some pretty good leftovers so far in this legacy.

Re: The Other Coach K -- A Yearbook Legacy (CH 2K8)

For the time being I'm planning to do game-by-game recaps, but that could change at any time to speed up progress.

One reason I'm doing it is because I'm changing my original plan to sim a fair number of games, & will be playing most of them instead. Not having played CH 2k8 for a while I forgot about how none of your freshman want to shoot the ball in simmed games, and didn't feel like adjusting everyone's tendencies. I don't really think doing so would be cheating, but I'm running a closed legacy, so I wouldn't be able to make similar adjustments to CPU teams.

Re: The Other Coach K -- A Yearbook Legacy (CH 2K8)

Game 2: Winthrop @ Sacramento State
Nov 10, 2008

Hornets Defeat Winthrop in O'Reilly Tournament Opener

Freshman SF Bradley Cannon scores on a 3-pointer

(Los Angeles, CA) The Sacramento State Hornets held off the Winthrop Eagles 85-81 to win their opening game in Bracket D of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE tournament. The Hornets were aggressive on offense throughout the game, resulting in 25 free throw attempts, and a 46-24 edge in points scored in the paint. After being held scoreless in the season opener, PF Raphael Rios led the Hornets with 18 points on perfect 8-8 shooting, and collected 9 rebounds. Freshman SF Bradley Cannon came off the bench to score 17 points on 6-12 shooting (3-4 3-pt), as Sacramento State shot a scorching 56.6% from the field.

The Hornets dominated the glass, outrebounding Winthrop 34-23, behind the first double-double of freshman C Kammron Ravello's college career (12 pts, 12 rebs). Hornets PG Vinnie McGhee tallied 11 assists in the win.

After falling behind by double-digits early in the first half, Winthrop rallied and nearly came back for the win behind 27 points from SG Byron Faison. Sacramento State Coach K was disappointed in his team's defense and inability to close out the game, as Winthrop shot 13-30 from the 3-pt stripe. "We just gave them too many open looks throughout the game. We tried to play tight man-to-man, but it seems our young guys just lose focus on the defensive end a lot."

The Hornets will face the California Golden Bears in the final of Bracket D.
