    2011-2012 Timberwolves Preview

Minneapolis, MN - For nearly half of a decade, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been near or at the bottom of the Western Conference's Northwest Division. The post-Kevin Garnett era has not been kind to the T'Wolves as their record has been an anemic 78-250. Even after finishing the previous season with only 17 wins, confidence is slowly growing in Minneapolis. Kevin Love has turned into what seems to be a perennial All-Star. Ricky Rubio has finally joined the team after a two year wait overseas. The 2011 2nd Overall pick Derrick Williams is touted by many as the front runner for rookie of the year and future All-Star. During the past offseason, the Wolves added experience at the head coach position by hiring Rick Adelman and hope his uptempo style of offense will mesh with this growing group of young talent. The Timberwolves will surely improve this season and the future looks very bright. The Timberwolves open the season against the New York Knicks.

      'Melo Lights Up the Timberwolves
Anthony scores 40 in Knicks' narrow 78-75 win over Minnesota

Minneapolis, MN - The Timberwolves looked extremely comfortable in the 1st half and built a 13 point lead on the New York Knicks before the wheels fell off in the 2nd half. Carmelo Anthony decimated the T'Wolves' defense and dropped 40 points in the NBA's opening night. Baron Davis started the Knicks run by scoring 14 points in the 3rd quarter alone to bring the Knicks back and give them the lead. The young Timberwolves would not go away as they kept close for most of the 2nd half and even led at 65-64 early in the 4th quarter. Ricky Rubio looked fantastic at points in the game as he assisted on multiple Kevin Love dunks. However, his five turnovers were most definitely a factor in the outcome. "We just have to eliminate the turnovers," coach Rick Adelman said after the game. "I think now that jitters of opening night are over, Ricky will settle down and be a lot more efficient with the ball,".

In the locker room after the game the mood was generally positive. "I think we showed a lot tonight. We came out and gave a good Knicks team all we had and almost came away with the W. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people this year," said Wesley Johnson. "We're gonna be ok,"

When asked if any of the blame for the loss should be put on Rubio's turnovers, Johnson quickly shot that notion down. "It was Ricky's first NBA game. I for one can say i've had worse than that. Most of us have. He's going to be alright. I think he played a lot better than most of the "experts" out there think,"

"In the end it's a learning experience," Kevin Love added at the post game press conference. "We're a young team. I know it's hard to find the good in a loss but I think this'll be good in the long term. And I can't wait to pay them back when we visit the Garden,"

Both teams are coming into Friday night's game winless after dropping their first games of the season. The Timberwolves lost at home to the Knicks 78-75 while the Nuggets dropped their opener to the Lakers 61-48. The T'Wolves and Nuggets are both young teams that are looking for momentum early on in this new season.

Clutch Three Pointers Carry Timberwolves to 1st Win
Love and Beasley Lead 4th Quarter Surge

Denver, CO - On the second night of a season opening back-to-back the Timberwolves walked away from the Pepsi Center with a win over the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets broke the game wide open during the 2nd quarter with a barrage of threes from Danilo Gallinari and Al Harrington. The Timberwolves defense could do nothing to stop them as they ran up an 11-point lead before the T'Wolves closed the gap to 4 at the half.

"They came out firing tonight," Michael Beasley said at the post game presser. "They just kept hitting from long range and we couldn't do anything about it,"

"Yeah, coach wasn't too happy about that," Wesley Johnson added. "He chewed us out at the half. I don't blame him though. We looked terrible on D,"

Coming out of the break, the T'Wolves were led by their All-Star Kevin Love and rookie Ricky Rubio. The team shot 1-10 from three-point range in the first half and quickly abandoned the strategy as they began dumping the ball down into the paint to Love. Rubio supplemented Kevin Love's offense with suffocating defense en route to a 5 steal night.

(Michael Beasley alley-ooping Wesley Johnson off of a Rubio steal)

"I was pleased with what I saw in the second half from everyone. If we can stick to that gameplan for the entire 48 minutes then we'll be very successful," coach Rick Adelman said in an after game interview. When asked about how he felt Rubio ran the offense that night he smirked. "Ricky ran a very efficient game tonight. Yes, he had a couple more turnovers than I'd like but he made up for it on the defensive end tonight,"

Kevin Love also had kind words for his new teammate. "Ricky went out there tonight and played a hell of a game. I'm positive that without those steals and hitting Wes and Mike for corner threes in the 4th we'd have had a much more difficult time tonight,"

Timberwolves' rookie, Derrick Williams, had a rough night by going 0-4 from the field. "Derrick just needs more time. We're trying to ease him into the offense. Ricky had been playing professional basketball in Europe since he was 16 so it's a bit different than Derrick's development. Derrick just needs a few more minutes to get himself in a rhythm. I liked what I saw when he was on the floor with Kevin and Michael. He ran the floor good and played great defense. He just needs a few more minutes. We'll have to see how it goes against Indiana next week," Rick Adelman said before the end of the after game press conference.

The Pacers are out of the gate hot after defeating the Cavaliers and the Bulls in the first two contests. Minnesota is coming off of a comeback win over the Denver Nuggets. Can Kevin Love handle Pacers center Roy Hibbert with Darko Milicic out with the flu? Derrick Williams makes his first professional start and looks to make a statement after being held scoreless against the Nuggets.

                  Pacers Stay Perfect
                  Indiana Tears T'Wolves Defense Apart

Minneapolis, MN - The Timberwolves' locker room was quiet after a 17 point thrashing at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. Anytime the Timberwolves would make a run, Danny Granger and the Pacers thwarted any chance at a lead. As characteristic for the T'Wolves this season, they made a 4th quarter run and got within four before they fell apart in the last three minutes of the game.

"Our defense was absolutely nonexistent tonight. Not to down play Indiana's win tonight, they are a very good team, but we didn't give it our best tonight. I know we're better," coach Rick Adelman said. "We took some terrible shots out there. Ball movement was slim to none. It was catch and shoot all night. We didn't follow our game plan at all. We looked flat out awful. We've got work to do in the gym at practice,"

Many of the Timberwolves players had the same sentiment after the defeat. "We just didn't play our game tonight. I'm not totally sure what went on out there," Kevin Love told a Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter. "We didn't play our game at all. We took way too many bad shots. I'm not going to put the blame on anyone in particular. It was just a bad team effort,"

Love wasn't the only player opting for a diplomatic answer. "It's a team game. The blame doesn't lay with just one person. Nobody hit shots tonight. You just have games like that," point guard Luke Ridnour said in the locker room. "It's just one of those nights. We've got a day off and play Houston on Friday so hopefully we'll get our heads clear on the flight down and play much better. I'm sure we will,"

When asked about his shot selection and shot volume over the past few games, forward Michael Beasley went on the defensive. "I don't get it. You guys didn't have a problem with my shot selection the other night. If someone has a bad night around here you gotta jump all over them. You didn't say anything about Wes' night the other night," Beasley left shortly after. When asked to reply to Beasley's comments, Wesley Johnson didn't play into the game at all. "I know you guys just want a story. I'm not worried about it. Mike had an off night tonight. We all do from time to time. No story here. I'm just focused on Houston,"

Rubio Named Western Conference Player of the Week

(T'Wolves rookie Ricky Rubio receiving the news of his player of the week selection)

Minneapolis, MN - In a wild first week of basketball, Minnesota Timberwolves rookie point guard Ricky Rubio was named the Western Conference player of the week. Rubio stated that it was a great honor to be named player of the week and looks forward to the rest of the season. Coach Rick Adelman praised the rookie for his passing and ever improving offensive game. "Give Ricky a couple of years and I think he'll be one of the best point guards in the league and challenging for an All-Star spot every season,"

The Houston Rockets have absolutely dominated their first four opponents and open the season with a perfect record. The Timberwolves are looking to rebound from an embarrassing defensive effort at home in a loss to the Indiana Pacers. Rookie Derrick Williams looks to keep the momentum going from his 12 point, 8 rebound effort against the Pacers. For the second straight game Williams will be starting in place of Darko Milicic who misses his second straight game with the flu.

Rookies Rubio and Williams Lead the Way Against Houston
T'Wolves Bench Comes Alive and Ignites Wolves Offense

Houston, TX - Two nights after a terrible showing at the Target Center, the Timberwolves defense decided to show up to the game. The Rockets had an inauspicious start as leading scorer Kevin Martin was knocked out of the game with a separated shoulder. The injury came half-way through the 1st quarter when Martin collided with Wolves forward Michael Beasley on a driving lay-up. Beasley also left the game with an unspecified injury after the collision but he returned at the start of the 2nd quarter. When asked how he felt his young team performed, Rick Adelman had nothing but good things to say about his team's performance.

"Everyone played excellent tonight. This is what i've been trying to get out of this team since day one. The next thing is consistency. If we can keep playing like that night in and night out, we'll be in a good place,"

The players reflected their coach's sentiment in the locker room after the game. "It feels great! To finally have everything come together," forward Wesley Johnson said after the game. "We've had moments in the first few game where we played well but to put an entire game together felt good. We had help from everyone. Starters and the bench all had fantastic nights,"

Reigning player of the week Ricky Rubio had a slow start before finding holes in the interior defense to make easy layups or dish the ball to Martell Webster and Wesley Johnson sitting open at the three point line. Kevin Love had a monster day on the boards by snagging 10 rebounds and playing excellent defense in the paint. Rockets' leading scorer Luis Scola couldn't find a way into the paint and scored most of his baskets from midrange. Rookie Derrick Williams once again stepped up and led the Timberwolves in scoring and shot a perfect 7/7 from the field.

Adelman conclude the nights press conference by answering questions about Derrick Williams' place once starting center Darko Milicic returns from the flu. "Derrick has played great over these past two games. As for Darko, no one is losing their place due to injury or sickness and he'll remain our starting center when he returns. We'll just have to see how it goes,"

When asked about his play time, Derrick Williams laughed a little. "I'm just out here to play ball. Whatever is best for the team is what i'll do,"

I love what you've got going on here, glad to see you starting to win. You're pretty patient with Darko lol, I would've kept him on the bench personally, but you're keeping it realistic at least, no one goes from starter to bench warmer in a day right? Inspired me to get back into dynasty making, I'll be keeping an eye on this though.

Thanks a lot guys. I should have the next game up some point today. As much as I love the front court of Derrick Williams and Kevin Love, realistically I don't think he'd be starting yet. Darko is good for rebounds and that's just about it lol.

The Timberwolves welcome the Miami Heat to the Target Center in this early season matchup. As usual, the Miami media circus has made its way to Minneapolis. Expect newcomers Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams to be thrust into the national spotlight for the first time in their career. Can they handle the pressure of playing in a game that many expect them to lose? Will the T'Wolves defense be able to stop the deadly Miami fast break? Darko Milicic returns after missing two games with flu-like symptoms. After two fantastic games taking on a starting role, can Williams continue his hot streak coming off of the bench?
