Pistons Outlast Pacers In Divisional Showdown, 116-112

This game had playoff intensity, an exciting finish, and great plays. Even though the all-star break isn't for another week or so, the intensity of the regular season is ratcheting up. The Detroit Pistons managed to stave off a comeback by the Indiana Pacers at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indiana, 116-112. The Pistons led by as many as 18 in the 3rd quarter before a furious rally, sparked by Tyreke Evans and Damien Lillard brought the Pacers back to within 4 entering the 4th quarter. The Pistons again sprinted out ahead, leading 110-99 with just over 5 minutes left. However the Pacers chipped away until the lead was down to one with less than a minute to play. Rodney Stuckey knocked down a corner jumper with 31 seconds left to give the Pistons a three point lead. Then with 16 seconds left, Paul George knocked down a three from the top of the key to tie the game at 112 apiece. Stuckey knocked down another 20 footer from the left corner to give the Pistons a two point lead. After a timeout, Eric Gordon missed an open three with 3 seconds on the clock. Brandon Knight grabbed the rebound and was fouled. With 2.2 seconds left, he calmly knocked down 2 free throws to finish out the game.

Both teams had key players with foul trouble. Greg Monroe picked up two fouls in the first 3 minutes of the game and had to sit out the rest of the first quarter. Gerald Wallace picked up his 5th with about 7 minutes left in the 4th and sat while the Pacers chipped away at the lead. For the Pacers, Eric Gordon was unable to stay on the court, picking 5 fouls in just 19 minutes of action.

Detroit was led by Knight, who had 30 points. Both Stuckey and Monroe had 22. Wallace had 17 points, 10 boards, and a team high 6 assists. He also chipped in with 3 steals and a block, while hounding George all over the court. Festus Ezeli played key minutes in place of Monroe in the 1st after Jonas Jerebko also picked up two early fouls. Ezeli had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist in 9 minutes of action. Piston guards struggled to control the explosive Pacer backcourt. Evans had 34 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Lillard had 21 points in 24 minutes. Gordon had 12 points in his 19 minutes. Along with Leandro Barbosa and Jamal Crawford, Pacer guards accounted for 76 of the Pacers 112 points. On of the biggest issues this year has been the play of center Roy Hibbert. Hibbert is in the 2nd year of a big contract and has his lowest scoring average since 08-09 and his lowest rebounding numbers in 3 years. He shot just 1-6 and was limited to 4 points, but even more distressingly, he grabbed just one rebound and blocked no shots in 32 listless minutes.

Piston coach Lawrence Frank said, "Tough, tough game. Their backcourt is phenomenal. They have 5 guys that can score 40 on you. We really struggled to defend the pick and roll and the drive. It's something we will have to work on. I can't say enough about the job Festus did for us in the 1st quarter. I love that my guys all stay ready for when they are called upon. He played great D, chipped in a couple buckets and really hit the boards."

Evans said, "Close is meaningless. We have the talent to win the whole league, but we aren't putting it together. On paper, we are starting five all-star caliber players and have some serious firepower off the bench with Damien, Jamal, Tyler (Hansbrough), and Leandro. We just have to figure out how to make it work every night."

Detroit improved to 36-20 while Indiana fell to 27-26. Detroit has to turn right around and head to Atlanta tonight for a tough back to back tomorrow evening. Detroit still trails Chicago by one game in the Central.

Clippers Grab Kevin Martin In Three Way Deal with Magic and Nuggets

The Los Angeles Clippers have known that Chauncey Billups just isn't working out at shooting guard this season. The team was thrilled that he decided, with much prodding by point guard Chris Paul, to come back for one more season. However the mind may have been willing, the body apparently is not. Billups is averaging under 10 points a game (9.8) and shooting just 35% from the field. As a result the Clippers have traded for Orlando Magic shooting guard Kevin Martin in a three-way deal that also involved the Denver Nuggets. The Clippers get Martin and also Jordan Hamilton, a small forward from Denver. They send Billups to Denver and Eric Bledsoe, Samardo Samuels, and a 2014 1st round pick to Orlando. Denver is also sending Orlando Casper Ware and Dexter Strickland, while getting a 2nd round pick from Orlando for the 2015 draft.

Martin is averaging 18.2 points and shooting .444 from the field. In addition to the pick, Bledsoe is the prize Orlando was coveting. He's just 24 and showing flashes of blossoming into a solid point guard. He is still struggling from the field, but is averaging 3.9 assists in just 21 minutes per game of action. He also is a solid rebounder for his size (6-1). Hamilton was a 2011 1st round pick who has been stuck behind Aaron Afflalo, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, and Delonte West at the 2/3 spot. He may see some court time backing up Martin, with Billups gone. Rumors are that Billups may retire, however the Nuggets are trying to convince him to play out the year since their current starting point guard Ty Lawson is still set to miss 2-4 more weeks of action.

Piston Look Tired On 2nd Night of Back To Back, Fall To Hawks 113-99

The Detroit Pistons were facing a rested Atlanta Hawks team on the last night of the 1st half of the season. While the Hawks were rested, the Pistons were coming off a grueling 116-112 win over the Indiana Pacers the night before, followed by a flight down to Atlanta and a late night/early morning hotel check-in. It showed on the court as the Hawks simply had more energy. One sign of that energy disparity was in how the Hawks grabbed 14 offensive rebounds to just 5 for Detroit. Atlanta may have been playing the final game of the Joe Johnson/Al Horford/Josh Smith era as one of them is almost certain to be traded before next Thursday's trade deadline. But with the focus on Atlanta's version of the big three, it was their bench that made the difference. Marco Belinelli, Ivan Johnson, Will Barton, Jerome Jordan, Robbie Hummel, and Anthony Roberson scored 47 points off the bench. Belinelli and Barton led the way with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Detroit was led by Brandon Knight, who continues his stellar play with 25 points and 7 assists. He also nabbed 4 steals. Gerald Wallace had 23, while Greg Monroe had 15 points and 11 boards. The Piston bench, in contrast to Atlanta, had just 18 points, all scored by Mo Williams and Jonas Jerebko. Atlanta was led by Joe Johnson, perhaps in his last game as a Hawk. Johnson had 24 points and 6 assists. Al Horford and Josh Smith struggled with some foul trouble, scoring 14 and 11 respectively. Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 9 assists.

Piston coach Lawrence Frank said, "I was disappointed in our lack of energy. All teams have to play back to back games after traveling. It's part of the league. And we are a young team, so I want no excuses. That said, I'm happy to see the all-star break. Greg can go let the world see how great he is, while everyone else can relax and enjoy the time off."

When asked about anymore moves before the deadline, Frank said, "No, I don't expect anymore moves. I think our team is ready as it is. That said, if the right deal came along, I'm sure Joe Dumars would pull the trigger if he thought it made us better this year and in the future."

Josh Smith was noncommittal after the game. "If I get traded, I get traded. Same with Joe or Al. We love Atlanta and we got to the East finals last year, but we aren't performing and this is a business. When you pay three guys a small fortune to bring a championship and five years later they still haven't done it. management talks changes. If it's me, fine. If it's one of the others or all three of us, that's fine too. All I can control is how I play on the court, whether that's here, in LA, New York, or wherever."

Detroit heads into the all-star break at 36-21 a full 2 games behind Chicago in the Central Division. They are a 4th in the Eastern Conference one game behind third place New York and 3.5 games behind Miami, who is currently atop the Eastern Conference. Detroit finished the 1st half 19-10 at home and 17-10 on the road, which is the best road record in the NBA.

Re: Detroit Pistons Dynasty: If the Wings can do it, why can't we?

Flurry Of Action At The Trading Deadline, Including Dirk Going to Chicago

On a day full of trades, none was bigger than Dallas Mavericks institution Dirk Nowitzki heading to the Chicago Bulls. Nowitzki was traded along with Tomas Satoransky for Taj Gibson, Carlos Boozer, and three Chicago 1st round picks. The Mavericks decided it was time to rebuild with Nowitzki in the final year of his contract. Dirk is still averaging 18.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while shooting .494. Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said, "We felt that the team as currently made up was good, but we needed a little something more to get past Miami. The opportunity to pick up Dirk came an we jumped."

Another huge deal was the breakup of the Atlanta Hawks "big three." Josh Smith was traded to the Houston Rockets for Doron Lamb, Marcus Morris, and 3 1st round picks. The Rockets weren't done as they trade Patrick Patterson to the Utah Jazz for promising shooting guard Alec Burks and then resigned all-star point guard Kyle Lowry to a 5 year/49.06 million dollar deal.

The other biggest deal of the day was San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili heading to Portland for Wesley Matthews and promising small forward Luke Babbitt.

Doron Lamb never even had a chance to get on a plane headed for Atlanta before he found out he was going even farther southeast to Orlando. Orlando traded Eric Bledsoe, who was acquired in a deal for Kevin Martin 5 days earlier. Also having a short stay was Jordan Hamilton. Hamilton arrived to the Los Angeles Clippers and played one game after being traded from Denver. Hamilton is more of a 3 than 2, so the Clippers flipped him to Philadelphia for 2 guard Dahntay Jones and point guard Will Bynum. Bynum will fill the backup point guard spot along with newly signed free agent Sherron Collins, that Bledsoe vacated.

Two other smaller trades concluded the day as the Minnesota Timberwolves looked to improve inside by adding Elton Brand from the New Orleans Hornets for Johan Petro and a 2014 2nd round pick and the Indiana Pacers traded little used forward Omri Casspi to the Trail Blazers for Branden Wright and a 2014 2nd round pick.

Re: Detroit Pistons Dynasty: If the Wings can do it, why can't we?

Pistons Shooting Still On Break, Lose to Boston 97-81

Before the game, several Detroit Piston players remarked at how refreshing the all-star break was. It seems it might have been so refreshing that they left their shot on vacation. The Boston Celtics pounced on Detroit with a barrage of three pointers in the 1st quarter and cruised the rest of the way as Detroit missed a variety of layups, drives, jumpers, post-ups, and three pointers on their way to a 97-81 loss. In the 1st quarter Boston knocked down 6 of 10 three point attempts helping them to a 34-22 lead. At the half, Detroit had more points in the paint (22-20), more made free throws (10-5), and an equal number of turnovers (4). The difference was Boston had made 8-18 three pointers while Detroit shot a woeful 15-41 (36%). The shooting for Boston went south in the 2nd half, but Detroit's got worse as well. Boston shot just 14-41 (34%) in the 2nd half, including hitting 4-15 from the 3 point line. Detroit shot 14-43 (32%), hit just 10-17 free throws, and 3-12 three pointers. For the game, despite outscoring Boston 40-36 in the paint, scoring more fast break points (22-17), scoring more points off turnovers (8-7) and having more offensive rebounds (9-6), they managed to lose by 16 simply by failing to make shots, while Boston made just enough in the final 3 quarters to maintain their lead.

The only Detroit player to hit more than half his shots was Gerald Wallace, who hit 4-7. Two other players (DeShawn Stevenson and Andre Drummond) hit 2-4 each. Rodney Stuckey shot just 3-15, Greg Monroe hit 6-18, Mo Williams hit just 1 out of his 10 shots, and Brandon Knight hit 5-11. Monroe and Knight led the Pistons with 13 points each. Boston was led by Paul Pierce with 19, including knocking down 4 threes in the pivotal 1st quarter. Rajon Rondo had 15, as did Avery Bradley. Robin Lopez had 14 and Wesley Johnson had 12. Kris Humphries led the Celtics with 14 rebounds.

Piston's coach Lawrence Frank said, "Shooting. You all saw it. They hit shots early, we didn't hit shots all night. In that first quarter we got what we wanted, we just failed to finish. We got them taking shots we wanted, they just knocked them down. Some nights are like that. I don't want to take anything away from Boston, because they are a good team, but we didn't get beat by great Boston D, we simply failed to hit shots. I do want to talk up our bench at the end. We were plus eight in the final 8 minutes with DeShawn, Josh (Smith), Festus (Ezeli), and Elias (Harris) out there. They played some great, great defense."

Boston coach Doc Rivers said, "I wouldn't put too much stock in this game. I know some were hyping this game as a playoff preview because we are currently in 5th and they are in 4th, but things can change. I didn't feel like we kept them from doing everything they wanted. If they would have hit some shots, it might have been a different story. Bottom line is we played one quarter of great basketball and then held on because the other team had an off night. We need 4 quarters of great basketball, every night."

Detroit fell to 36-22, while Boston improved to 34-23. The loss left Detroit 1.5 games ahead of Boston, one game behind New York for third, and 2 games back of Chicago for the Central division crown. Detroit now heads to Orlando to face a Magic team that has undergone some recent changes with leading scorer Kevin Martin being traded and the addition of young 2 guard, Doron Lamb.
