Re: The Powerhouse --|Tyler Kouwe|--

The opening

Every man has a dream of what they wish to accomplish in their lives. Their choices vary wildly based on their desires and wishes. Their upbringing and skills way heavily as well. The realization of a hobby or interest becoming a full-time career is one that anyone could hold in a high regard. For the thousands of collegiate athletes, they are just below of the surface. Scrambling for that illusive shot at the professional level where their hobby becomes their profession. However these young men don't always have their eyes on sports especially at the collegiate level. Those that are less talented may eye their degree as their future career, how they get there affects so much. They say those who are too smart to play, coach.

Yet who can pretend that it is even smart to put your stock and lifebringing in a group of athletes that have such varying talents, skills and interests. Committment isn't always 100%, yet you see men line up for the shot to coach these youngsters, as they reach their goals, the coaches claw their way up the coaching ladder.

The story opens in Macomb, Illinois where the school whom has had a quiet basketball program seeks to gain resurgence from one of their own alumni. An athletics major with a focus on coaching was named head coach after an internship and coordinating underneath the previous regime. Tyler Kouwe finds himself in the position of so many other coaches, yet his problems are doubled. He is only 25, not much older than some that he coaches and issues could arise.

Yet those that talk to the man know that he is anything but an average 25 year old. His goals aren't simply winning, it's dominating. He isn't happy unless he is completely crushing his competition. "Your not the best, if someone can beat you" was a popular quote from him during his coordinating years as he finished his masters. Now his degree, his hobby has become a profession. Coaching at his alma matter allowed him to slip in quietly without much issue.

Oddly enough, he is fairly laid back until things get bad. He refuses to let his players slack off and accept defeat. His goals are dominance, yet his views are realistic. Things are about to get going in Macomb on the eve of Midnight Madness, a new era is about to begin and it's time for Tyler to make his name.

Starting five
PG - Russell Humphries
SG - Collier Low
SF - Kely O'Sullivan
PF - Gerrod Mullins
C - Travis Garner

Without strong true point guard, Russell Humphries will slide over to the point, shifting from an overstuffed 2-guard slot. This starting five has two players in Humphries and Mullins that can spread the floor. Mullins will have to play a european style, as his height will allow him to keep up on the boards but his skills lie in his shooting, as he is a true small forward, he will have to adapt to the position allowing Humphries to come in off the bench. Garner being considered for a redshirt this season, yet his size allowed him to slide into the starting line up. With no other true center and the next best option being four inches shorter, Kouwe will chance a rawer talent in favor of having some height on the boards. His inside game is phenomenal, but his post game and rebounding is still a big question mark and need to be developed. This team should aim for a .500 finish with Low being the leading scorer and the best player on this team.

The Kouwe regime started off on a positive note as the Leatherbacks knock off Morehead State in a battle that would go right down to the wire. Western would manage a slim lead at the end of the first half, after a very slow start from both teams that led to 0 points through the first four minutes of the game. Luckily both teams found some gaps in the opposition and would manage to make this a little more exciting. Garner in his debut had 12 points and 9 rebounds, quickly silencing any critics over his raw abilities. He was a force in the pant and even led the team in steals with two.

Garner's size makes him a valuable asset looking onward for the rest of the season. Every great coach starts with their first win and Kouwe managed to get his on his first attempt. Morehead State was very similarly skilled with more offensive abilities than defensive, yet this low scoring affair seemed to favor the defensive end of the court. Morehead State was awful from beyond the arc managing 4 conversions on 17 attempts, where as Western Illinois would shoot .500 from beyond.
