Bulls starting to show promise
LOS ANGELES -- This is what the Chicago Bulls envisioned when the took Michael Jordan with the number three overall pick in this year's draft.
Jordan led the Bulls with 28 points to go with 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, Orlando Woolridge and Quintin Dailey also scored 28 as Chicago stunned the Los Angeles Lakers 116-109 Sunday afternoon.
"It definitely is a preview of what they wanted,'' said veteran Steve Johnson, who had 15 points. "The way the he played today shows why he had the draft status he had, and it shows why there are the expectations for him that there are.''
Los Angeles sure didn't look like a team that made the NBA finals last season in the second half, even if they where without forward James Worthy.
Magic Johnson had 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 13 assists and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 21, but it wasn't enough to beat the Bulls. Kareem had just 5 rebounds as the Lakers were outrebounded 44-35.
"We made their year,'' Magic said. "I'm going to take the blame for that game. I had a good game, but winning and losing is what really matters."
Chicago was able to overcome a 5 point halftime deficit and slowed the Lakers attack down in the second half.
"That is part of the learning,'' Chicago coach Kevin Loughery said. "We want to continue to handle situations, handle runs, have poise -- and a lot of things we are learning.''
"I do feel we play better because we're scared,'' Woolridge said. "They have two of the best players in the world. If you're not, you can get blown away.''
"We ran into a good team today,'' said Lakers coach Pat Riley, "We just didn't match their energy at all in the second half."
"If we can do this against a team like the Lakers, we should be able to do this against anyone,'' Jordan said. "When we play together, we can be a dangerous team.''
