Rondo Misses Shot at Buzzer, Kings Win In Nail-Biter
Rajon Rondo missed a 3 at the buzzer that could have sent the game into overtime
When coach Henderson walked into the media room for his post-game interview the first thing he did was wipe his forehead and breath a sigh of relief. The Kings really pulled this one out in a team fashion. The first 2 and 1/2 quarters were back and forth the whole time. Both teams were throwing punches left and right. Everytime one team made a run, the other team had a run of their own waiting for them.
With about 5:00 left in the 3rd quarter the Celtics went on a run that opened up a 14 point lead on the Kings. "We were deflated and ready to give up. That's what last year's team would have done, but not this year. Last year we were boys playing basketball, and this year we are men playing a man's game. We weren't going to give up that easy," said Tyreke Evans after the game. By the end of the 3rd quarter the Celtics were leading 79-72.
At the begining of the 4th quarter Terrence Williams exploded for 10 of his 20 points in 4:00 stretch. We was dunking, hitting jump shots, and making his free throws. The Kings opened up the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 1 point lead. Their lead would eventually reach as much as 8 points. With under a minute remaining and the Kings up by 5, Isaiah Thomas must have read the shot clock wrong, because he hoisted up a 3 with 15 second still left on the shot clock. "As a point guard clock awareness is something you must always have, and I won't ever let this happen again," said Thomas after the game. His 3 point shot was off the mark and the Celtics capatalized on the opportunity and Paul Pierce walked down the court and nailed a straight on 3. From that point on they played the free throw game. With 9.2 seconds the Kings led 103-100. Rajon Rondo walked the ball down the court, stared his defender down, came off a screen from Kevin Garnett, and hoisted up a 3 that clanked off the back iron as the buzzer sounded. The Kings skipped post-game handshakes and quickly ran into the lockeroom with their 4th straight victory.
