Re: Hoops Dynasty: Career of Hooper15c

Livingstone (10-11) vs St. Augustine’s (12-9)

St. Augustine’s comes into the game with 6 players averaging over 8 pts, with 2 chipping in over 10 a game, soo they have quite a balanced attack. They also have some pretty decent wins this season and have an RPI that shows them as an average team (which we’ve shown we can be beaten by this season).

The game started perfectly for me as I jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first 3 minutes but that evaporated quickly as they scored 7 straight to make it a 10-9 game. They kept it within 2-3 until about the 11 minute mark remaining in the half when they took their first lead of the game 18-16. We were quick to reclaim the lead on scores by Renosky and Tatum. We then were able to push the lead to 5, 27-22, when Woods hit a 3 with 5:17 remaining. They manage to cut the lead to 3, 34-31, with 1:27 left but we end the half on a 5-1 run on a Moe 3-point play and a Goss Dunk to go into the half with a 39-32 lead which was my largest lead of the game to this point.

Second half got started as we just exchanged baskets and through the first 2 minutes had both scored 4 pts to make it a 43-36 game. We scored on our next 2 possessions (Smiley one handed slam and Tatum with a runner) to push it to a double digit lead for the first time all game. We keep it right around 10 until there were 13 minutes left in the game when they started chipping away at that lead and over the next two minutes had made it a 54-52 game. Luckily the possession after they cut the lead to 2 Goss converted on a 4 pt play to push it back to a 6 pt game. They cut it back to 3 about a minute later but then our defense sort of takes them down a few notches as from the time they made it 59-56 with 8:11 left in the game we allowed them to score only 6 more pts. We finished the game on a 15-6 run to walk away from this matchup with a 74-62 victory. Goss led all scorers with 25 and we had no other scorers get to double figures but did have 4 players with 7 or more. This win pushes us to a .500 record for the first time since the 2nd game of the season and honestly is something I didn’t expect us to accomplish after that 1-9 start. It also brings our RPI down to 170.

Next up we welcome Elizabeth City St whom we beat earlier in the season by a score of 79-59 and were led in that victory Goss’ 27 and Tatum’s 12. Bradley also registerd 8 pts and 6 assists in the first matchup and Renosky had 7 pts to go with 4 assists (neither Bradley nor Renosky had a turnover)

Re: Hoops Dynasty: Career of Hooper15c

Livingstone (11-11) vs Elizabeth City St (5-15)

Elizabeth City St came into this game complete outmatched on paper and that was shown in the first matchup between these two teams which Livingstone won 79-59 at ECSU. They are led in scoring by 3 seniors, SG Johnson (11.8 PPG), SG Smith (11.0 PPG), and PF Boyce (10.2 PPG). That first matchup ECSU actually went into it as the favored team and allowed Goss to score 27 and Tatum to pitch in 12 while only forcing a total of 7 turnovers. This matchup we’re heading into it as the favored team and hope not fall into any sort of trap as we look forward to our big matchup against Virginia Union.

ECSU jumped out to an early 6-5 lead, but thanks to a 3 pt play by Davies and a Moe tip-in we were able to jump out to a 4 pt lead of our own, 10-6. We played even for the first 11 minutes of the game as we were never able to extend our lead past 4 and we just exchanged scores until Renosky hit 2 FTs with 9:04 left in the half to push our lead to the largest of the game, 21-14. At this point I expected us to put them away (yes, this team has now turned that pessimism into a sort of muted optimism as I fully expected them to pull away at this point), but ECSU wouldn’t go away as they went on a 8-2 run to cut the lead to 23-22. Luckily we were able to close the half on a 6-1 run to take a 29-23 lead into the half. We were led by Goss’ 8 pts, 3 rebs, and 2 steals in the first half. Bradley also contributed in 3 pts, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

The second half started just as I would hope as Goss and Davies scored on our first two possessions to push the lead to 33-23. At this point I again was waiting for us to drive the dagger into them and finish them off, but they wouldn’t go away and went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 33-30 with 14:05 remaining in the game. However we wouldn’t just let them walk all over us as over the next 6 minutes we went on a little 12-2 run of our own that was capped off by Bradley getting fouled on a 3, hitting the first 2 FTs, Smiley grabbing the Oboard on the missed 3rd, and Moe hitting a floater pushing the lead to 45-32. ECSU battles hard for the final 8 minute but are never able to get within 8 pts and fall behind as many as 14 before finally losing by that margin 64-50. Goss and Davies were the leading scorers for Livingstone with 17 and 11 respectively. No player had more than 6 rebounds and we only had 10 assists to go with 12 turnovers. We did only have 14 fouls which is a positive and we’ve shown as long as we keep that number down, it usually results in a win. This victory pushes our record to 12-11 on the season and 10-2 in conference and brings our RPI to 164.

Next up we travel to play Virginia Union who are coached by a good friend of mine from back in High School. He came into Hoops Dynasty with me and actually we both sort of flamed out around the same time and I was able to convince him to join back with me and he was able to find a suitable job at a team within the same conference as me which worked out nice. Over the years I have a 5-4 record against him, and this will obviously be our first meeting at our new schools and during our return. They are currently 17-6 (10-3), and RPI of 122, and leading the South Division by 1 game over Virginia State. A win against them tonight would do wonders in ensuring that we are the 2nd best team in the conference overall (doesn’t really have an effect on anything other than just bragging rights) and should lower the RPI into the 150’s. Fayetteville St is still undefeated during conference play and with only a few games remaining it looks like our chances to sneak in for a share of the conference title are dwindling as the days go by.

This is some interesting stuff. Hoops Dynasty looks pretty cool. Are the games simmed based on your coaching input then?

You are able to set your depth chart, decide you subbing pattern (if you want to aim for target minutes for your starters or sub based on fatigue) and you then can set your offense/tempo and defense/level of pressure (from -5 where you take away the middle to +5 where you take away all outside jumpers).

I'd say the most important aspect is the recruiting which is only done for a week before the season actually starts. The best coaches are able to gameplan and make adjustments to really improve their squad where most coaches will just set it and forget it and may lose a few close games they'd win otherwise, but if you constantly dominate in recruiting you'll be set either way.

I would highly recommend it, although it sucks feeling like you have no control as you nosedive to say a 1-9 start and you just want to rip your hair out. Haha Looking forward to posting a recap from the game that just got simmed against my long-time friend in real life.

Re: Hoops Dynasty: Career of Hooper15c

Livingstone (12-11) @ Virginia Union (17-6)

This was shaping up to be one of the biggest games of our season to date. Our first matchup (and second one to end the season) against Fayetteville St are probably the only games that have more ramifications on our RPI and how the team’s season will be remembered in the history of Livingstone, but this one has the personal touches of playing against a very close friend of mine whom I’ve had many battles with over the years in Hoops Dynasty. Coming into this matchup I’ve had a 5-4 record against him over the years and being in the same conference it ensures that we’ll be seeing each other at least once a year until one of us decides to head toward greener pastures.

Virginia Union enters the game with an RPI of 122 and is led by 2 of the top scorers in the conference (SG Allred, 16.1 PPG, and SF Midgley, 14.6 PPG). Senior PG Claytor also chips in 11.3 pts and 5.8 assists per game. One important factor about this team is their reliance on their starting 5 and that will be even more so this game as their backup SG, freshman Byram whom averages over 6 pts per game in about 12 minutes, will be out with an injury. So that is going to force Allred to likely have to play then entire game which could lead to him getting worn down by the end of the game.

This game started out pretty much exactly as I had assumed it would. A real knock-down, drag out sort of game that seemed to go back and forth from the tip until the final buzzer. VU jumped out to an early 5-2 lead which we answered with a 5 pt run of our own (all 5 pts by Davies) to claim the lead. Over the next few minutes they would proceed to tie the game and I would end up regaining a 2-5 pt lead until about the 8:34 mark left in the first when they reclaimed the lead 23-21. It went back and forth for a few minutes until Allred hit a jumper with 4:59 left to give them their biggest lead of the game at 29-24. Thankfully we followed that up with a 3 by Goss and a 3 pt play by Moe to reclaim a 30-29 lead with 4:16 left. It was back and forth the rest of the half as we go into half all knotted up 34-34. We were led in the 1st half by Davies 9 pts and 10 rebounds, Goss’ 7 pts, and Bradley chipped in with 4 first half steals.

They opened the second half about the exact way I feared as they went on a 10-2 run to build 44-36 lead. Luckily as you’ll likely hear me preach over and over again, basketball is a game of runs and we answered their run with one of our own. We showed them that anything they could do, we could do better as over the next 3 minutes we went on a 12-0 run to turn that 8 pt deficit into a 4 pt lead with 14:02 left (Bradley and Goss both contributed 5 pts over that run). Over the next 10 minutes the lead changes hands no less than 6 times and is tied an additional 4 and with a Goss layup with 2:39 left we grabbed the lead at 65-64. Our next possession Davies made 2 FTs to push the lead to 3. Neither team scores for the next minute until they make 1 FT with 1 minute left. Davies is fouled and drills both his FT to push the lead to 6 with 31 seconds left, Bradley steals the pass, Goss makes 2 FTs, VU turns the ball over again, Renosky gets both his FTs to go, and that pushed the lead to 8 and brought us to what ended up being the final score of the game 73-65. We were led in scoring by Goss with 20 and Davies with 13. Also of note, Davies finished with 15 total rebounds (9 of those offensive) and Bradley finished with 7 steals. Looking at the box score I’m quite surprised we were able to pull off the “upset” as we only had 7 assists to go with 14 turnovers and committed a total of 20 fouls, compared to their 18. We did a great job of creating turnovers as they committed 17 and probably the most important was we outrebounded them 41-32. This win pushes our record to 13-11 (11-2) and lowers our RPI down to 149.

We have an off night tonight which hopefully a few things fall our way and we’re able to shave a few more off our RPI by not playing. We will return to action with 2 games on the road against St. Paul’s (RPI: 196) and then Johnson C. Smith (RPI: 188). That will bring up our regular season finale when we welcome Fayetteville St. to our gym and hope to pull of that upset and potentially help out our RPI even more. As it stands right now I am locked into the 2nd spot in my division (and 2nd in the conference overall) unless Fayetteville St lays an egg 2 of their final 3 games, one of those being against me and one against either N. Carolina Central or Shaw (both on the road). I’m not overly optimistic it will happen, but if it did I would get a share in the regular season conference title after having started the season 1-9. Also being in the same division as Fayetteville St it means I wouldn’t be matched up with them until the title game of the conference tournament.

Re: Hoops Dynasty: Career of Hooper15c

Livingstone (13-11) @ St. Paul’s (9-14)

Coming off a well-deserved night off during the conference schedule we travel to take on St Paul’s University in what is the front end of only our 2nd, and final, “road trip” of the conference schedule. St. Paul’s enters the game having had only a mediocre season so far and are led by junior PG Wynn (11.8 PPG) and senior PF Paquette (11.7 PPG and 9.4 RPG). We entered the contest as 2 point favorites and turned out that St. Paul’s was a very scrappy bunch and would make sure if wasn’t a blowout, to say the least…

Over the course of the first 5:30 of the game St. Paul’s actually build a 9-6 lead however Goss scored on our next two possessions (coupled with a made FT by Davies) to give us an 11-9 lead. From that point we push the lead to 6 on a few occasions and both teams go through a drought where neither team scores for a 5 minute span and with 2 minutes left in the half St. Paul’s tied at 26 and actually get back-to-back stops and lay it in with 1 minute left to take a 28-26 lead. Luckily Bradley hits a 3 on our next possession and Goss drills a jumper at the buzzer to send us into the half with a 31-28 lead.

As has been the case the past few games, we open up the second half by scoring on our first couple possessions and pushing the lead to 36-28 less than a minute into the second half. We maintain a 7-8 pt lead until about the 12 minute mark when they score 5 straight points and cut the lead to 43-40. They then get another stop and end up making one FT on their next possession. Renosky then misses a jumper and one of their best shooters gets an open look from 3 to take the lead but misses short. We score 5 straight to push the lead to 6, but they answer with 8 straight to take a 48-46 lead with 6:58 remaining. Bradley hits 2 FTs and Moe makes a pull-up jumper on our next two possessions to reclaim the lead and they answer with a jumper of their own to re-tie the game at 50. On our next possession Goss misses a jumper, gets his own rebound, and proceeds to bang home a 3 to give us the lead back with 4:54 remaining. Of course as they’ve shown, they refuse to go away and actually get the game tied back up at 53s but Renosky comes through with a 3 pt play to give us another 3 pt lead with 2:14 remaining in the game. Both teams go into another slump (or go into defensive mode, whichever you prefer) and neither team scores for over a minute until Moe converts a 3 pt play with 30 seconds left to push the lead to 59-53. Goss and Tatum both convert at the FT down the stretch and they end up getting 1 made FT with 6 seconds left to clinch the final score of 63-54. The final score shows a 9 pt win, but the game was much closer than that and this St. Paul’s team is a scrappy bunch. Goss led all scorers with 20 and also pitched in with 9 rebounds. This win pushed us to 14-11 on the season with another road game coming up at Johnson C. Smith, whom we beat by 30 at home earlier in the season.

Livingstone (14-11) @ Johnson C. Smith (10-14)

JCSU is lead so far this season by senior SG Smith, who is their only player averaging double figures with 15.6. During our matchup earlier this year we ended up with an 84-54 victory and were led by Goss’ 27 and Tatum’s 13 pts while they had no players register in double figures. We entered this game as 3 pt favorites and the odds makers continue to show that they still have no faith in us after that rough 1-9 start.

JCSU showed the same kind of resolve through the first 4 minutes of the game as St. Paul’s did in the previous game as they had it tied at 9s until we scored 6 straight on a 3 by Renosky, a jumper by Gross and a FT by Tatum to take a 15-9 lead. The rest of the half plays out with us continuing to apply pressure and answer any run of theirs with an equal or greater one of our own. We are able to slowly push the lead as high as 43-29, which is actually the score we take into the half.

We are able to come out in the 2nd half with the same intensity and hard work that I’ve started to expect from this group of guys and we never let them get the game back within 10 pts, and pushed the lead to as many as 19 at multiple occasions. There wasn’t much of note going on in the second at all as we coasted to a 72-58 victory. We were led by Goss in scoring with 25 while Davies, Tatum, and Goss all finished with 8 rebounds apiece. This victory pushes our record on the season to 15-11 (13-2) and lowers our RPI to 141.

Sadly Fayetteville St has made it through their conference schedule to this point completely unscathed and sit at a record of 20-5 (15-0) and sport an RPI of 29. If these past two games have shown anything, it’s that winning on the road isn’t an easy task and we hope to prove that in the season finale tonight when we welcome Fayetteville State to our house. The result of the game will have no effect on the conference standings as we’re locked into our 1st and 2nd positions, and first round byes, heading into the conference tournament, but a win would greatly help surpass my season goal for our team RPI.

There is a key matchup for the South Division title tonight as Virginia Union 18-7 (11-4), currently in 1st in the division, and Virginia State 18-7 (10-5), 2nd in the division, battle it out. A victory by Virginia State would not only earn him a share of the conference title, but would also bump him into the #1 seed out of that division going into the conference tournament.

Livingstone (15-11) vs Fayetteville St (20-5)

And here we are in the season finale already. As I stated at the end of the last post, this game has largely no bearing on how the final standings shake out as we are both locked into our respective 1st and 2nd positions in the divisions, but it will serve as a great measuring stick to show far we’ve come since that 1-9 start. Had we won our first matchup, which we lost by 10 pts on the road, then this would have much more at stake, but sadly that isn’t the case. However, this is a rivalry I expect to only get more heated as the seasons go by as the coach there has been in that position for the past 40+ seasons, so I don’t see him going anywhere in the near future. FSU also came into the game with an RPI of 29 so a win would do wonders in dropping ours down even more. Coming into the game we were 7 pt underdogs and that just solidified my feeling that the odds makers have no respect for us.

The first half started great as we jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on dunks by Davies and Tatum however they answered with 7 pt run of their own to claim the lead 7-4 three minutes into the game. They maintain the lead until 14:04 left in the half when Tatum converts a 3 pt play to take a 10-9 lead and then proceeds to hit a jumper on our next possession to give us a 12-9 lead. Not only do we maintain the lead for the next few minutes but we actually push it to 7 when Renosky hits a 3 with 11:03 left in the first. That is big lead is short lived as they quickly take the lead back 25-24 with 5:32 to go. Those last 5:32 is when this team showed what they are made of. It would have been easy to just roll over and let this team beat up on us again however we did quite the opposite as we went on a 14-4 run over that period to take a 38-29 lead into the half. We were led in that first half by Tatum’s 10 pts while Davies and Goss chipped in with 7 each.

They came out in the second half dead set on cutting into our lead and through the first 4:30 of the half they did just that as we were looking at a slim 40-36 lead. This team has turned me into a believer at the right time as that 4 pt margin was as close as they’d get the rest of the game as we just continued to not only maintain the lead, but slowly increase it. By the time Moe ran out the clock to end the game we had pushed that 9 pt lead into a 13 pt victory as the final score showed 69-56. We were led by Goss who scored 20, Tatum with 14, and Renosky chipped in 10 off the bench. Should also be noted that Renosky finished 4-4 from the field (including 2-2 from 3) to go along with 4 assists in 16 minutes. As a team I was slightly disappointed in our rebounding numbers, were outrebounded 28-26, but we did have 16 assists compared to 10 turnovers while forcing 18 tunrovers.

In the South Division, my buddy’s team at Virginia Union ended up losing at home to Virginia St 84-79. That victory for Virginia St moved them into the #1 seed in the South and dropped Virginia Union into the #2 seed. All four teams, both Virginia schools, Fayetteville St, and myself, will all receive bye’s in the first round of the conference tournament.

Conference Tournament 1st Round Games

(4) St. Augustine’s vs (5)N. Carolina Central
Winner plays (1) Fayetteville St.

(6) Winston-Salem St. vs (3) Bowie St
Winner plays (2) Virginia Union

(4) Johnson C. Smith vs (5) St. Paul’s College
Winner plays (1) Virginia St.

(6) Elizabeth City St. vs (3) Shaw
Winner plays (2) Livingstone

Conference Tournament Prediction
Fayetteville St beats N. Carolina Central and then Virginia Union (who beats Bowie St) to match up against Livingstone, whom beat Shaw and avenged their only other conference loss to Virginia State (who beats Johnson C. Smith). In the conference title game Livingstone realizes this is their only chance at getting into any of the post season tournaments and they leave it all on the floor but fall just short of pulling the upset as Fayetteville St. wins the tournament title and is the only team from the conference invited to the big dance (or PIT for that matter).
