Hornets Lose Home Opener Against Experienced Spurs, 81-79 Tim Duncan hits last second layup to win game for Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs fought off a valiant effort from a young New Orleans Hornets team and grabbed a win on the road, 81-79, on Halloween night.
Tony Parker hit future Hall-of-Famer Tim Duncan with a perfect entry pass in rhythm which Duncan finished the only way he knows how; fundamentally. A finger roll off the glass hit the bottom of the net with 0.2 seconds left to seal the game for the Spurs.
Tim Duncan finished the game with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Tony Parker tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, despite struggling from the field.
"Duncan was my responsibility and he burned me. I thought I did a decent job on him all night, but that play he outsmarted me. He truly is an all time great."
-Hornets forward Anthony Davis
The rookie out of Kentucky had a solid debut despite his last second mishap, and finished with a solid double-double: 14 points, 12 rebounds, one block and one steal. The other first round pick for the Hornets, Austin Rivers, also debuted impressively: 14 points, with 6 of them coming from the free throw line.
"As a whole, our energy was great. Our effort was top notch and our defense was great, especially in the low post. Offensively, some shots just didn't fall and some mistakes were made. Their experience versus our inexperience really showed out there tonight, but overall I'm happy with things moving forward."
-Hornets head coach Monty Williams
