Fairfield Recruiting

Name: JW Jack
Position: SG
Height: 6-3
Weight: 202 lb.
Hometown: Staten Island, NY
Ranking: 5 Star OVR 25 POS 7
Notes: Averaged 40 points per game while playing in a small school league for schools with less than 40 students. Always ties his left shoe before his right. Some question his 5-star rating because of the lack of competition in high school and the fact that Jack did not attend any All-Star games or camps. Enjoys macaroni and cheese for breakfast.

Name: Avery Morissette
Position: SG
Height: 6-3
Weight: 181 lbs
Hometown: Queens, NY
Ranking: 3 Star OVR 122 POS 30
Notes: From the same city as Jack and Monserez, but never played against either in high school. Wanted to play football, but team did not have a helmet big enough for him. Slender combo guard with a well rounded offensive game. Biggest upside may be on the defensive side of the ball. Has a nasty habit of getting lost while walking from the court to the locker room.

Name: Darrell Monserez
Position: PG
Height: 6-1
Weight: 173 lbs
Hometown: New York, NY
Ranking: 2 Star OVR 506 POS 137
Notes: Excellent pick and roll PG still working to hone other parts of his game. Favorite potato chip is Lay's Chicken and Waffles. High school coach pressed the entire game, even if his team was up 50. Showed slow feet defensively against high level competition. Favorite movie is Titanic, and once took a selfie with Celine Dion.

Name: Joaquim Slater
Position: SG
Height: 6-5
Weight: 195 lbs
Hometown: Staten Island, NY
Ranking: 2 Star OVR 647 POS 132
Notes: Slater rounds out the NY freshmen quartet. Is a huge Michigan fan and was really excited when his mom said Coach Beilein was on the phone for him. Another slender athlete with long arms that could be effective in the 1-3-1. A work in progress on offense, but all the tools are there. Official Rock, Paper, Scissors champion of Staten Island could prove useful in settling disputes.

The following schools showed interest in Coach Beilein after Fairfield's Sweet 16 appearance:

In the end, Coach Beilein made his decision. Next season Patrick Beilein will be coaching...

Re: Like Father, Like Son: MBFranchise's CH2K8 Legacy

I will be adding a few new wrinkles this season. The first will be the 4 Factors of Winning Basketball. Whichever team wins the 4 factors is likely to win the game. The 4 Factors include field goals, free throws, rebounding, and turnovers. While statisticians can get all crazy with the numbers, I will keep it simple, so look for raw numbers instead of eFG% and stuff like that. Let's see if I can get the format correct below.

Michigan 4 Factors Michigan St
30/60 (15/30) FG 20/60 (5/30)
14/15 FT 7/15
8 TO 18
32 REB 30

The second will be to add a level of attrition to the game. College basketball has players transfer, leave the team, or get suspended all the time. To add this component to my legacy, I will assign each player on my team a number, 1-15. Number 1 will be the highest rated player, all the way down to 15. Then I will choose a random number 1-20. The player with the corresponding number is history, hopefully with a humorous story to tell. If the random number is 16-20 I lucked out and get to keep everyone.

You will see how attrition will impact next season in a few posts.

Offense Meets Defense as Beilein adds Havoc

For College Basketball Coaches, there is no offseason. No matter what the calendar says, coaches will be working to improve their team. Summertime is no exception, as coaches often work with one another at camps or meet with one another to share ideas. Patrick Beilein is no exception. Generally considered to be more offensive-minded than defensive, Beilein knew he had to search out a coach known for defense. Beilein decided to look for a mid-major coach similar to himself, and his search took him to Richmond, Virginia.

Beilein spent several weeks this summer meeting with VCU Rams Head Coach Shaka Smart. The coaches are remarkably similar yet remain opposites in some ways. Both have had success in the NCAA tournament with mid-major schools, Beilein reaching the Sweet 16 with Fairfield and Smart going all the way to the Final Four with VCU. So what did these coaches have to offer one another? Simple: Beilein is known for offense, Smart for defense. Sharing concepts and ideas could only serve to improve both teams.

The result is that Beilein shared his Chin offense with Smart, and Smart taught Beilein the finer points of VCU's Havoc full court press defense.Havoc is predicated on created turnovers through an immense amount of pressure. At its core, the defense runs a 1-2-1-1 diamond press that looks to trap and create easy offensive opportunities off of turnovers. Once paired with Beilein's half court 1-3-1 zone, the Stags will play a high-risk, high-reward full court defense along with a high-risk, high-reward half court defense. Should be interesting, to say the least.

Fairfield University Season 4 Roster Breakdown

BACKCOURT
3 SG JW Jack 6-3 202 FR 77 OVR
0 SG Brennan Barlow 6-5 207 SO 72 OVR
23 SG Avery Morissette 6-4 186 FR 72 OVR
11 PG Lyndon Jordan 6-3 191 SR 67 OVR
10 PG Darrell Monserez 6-2 180 FR 61 OVR

JW Jack is the most highly decorated recruit ever for Fairfield, and the rest of the team makes him work hard in practice because of it. He has all the talent in the world, but takes some hooooooorrible shots. Brennan Barlow is like a slinky, really long and effective at what he does. Avery Morissette played most of his basketball growing up outdoors so he is very tough-minded. Lyndon Jordan will be one of our steady senior leaders. We expect Darrell Monserez to lead the second team.

FRONTCOURT
4 SF Yorel Hawkins 6-6 192 SR 74 OVR
25 PF Deki Joneliunas 6-10 257 JR 72 OVR
22 SF Jason Kyle 6-9 229 SR 69 OVR
52 PF Jamont Traore 6-8 212 SO 67 OVR
20 SF Sean Grzeck 6-8 199 SR 66 OVR
24 SF Joaquim Slater 6-5 206 FR 58 OVR
51 PF Vaidotas Ritter 7-0 267 rSO 50 OVR

Yorel Hawkins is an interesting story. Started all 4 seasons at 4 different positions. As a freshman he played SF, as a sophomore PG, as a junior SG, and now as a senior we ask him to play PF. Obviously, the guy can do it all. Deki Joneliunas is a great offensive player who sometimes gets lost on defense. I expect him to be our pivot man this season. Jason Kyle is a specialist who has a very effective specialty: shooting the 3. Jamont Traore is unquestionably the hardest worker I have ever been around as a coach. It is getting more difficult to keep him off the court. Sean Grzeck might finally break 200 pounds this season. Joaquim Slater likes to run and jump but we need to fine tune his basketball skills. Vaidotas Ritter is Vaidotas Ritter.

PIVOT
40 C Bryan Sampson 6-11 251 SO 69 OVR
42 C DeAngelo Dudley 7-1 284 JR 56 OVR

Bryan Sampson has really worked hard this offseason to improve the areas we ask him to, specifically in the high screen and roll game. DeAngelo Dudley eats barbells for breakfast.

Avery Morissette Dismissed From Team

Fairfield's strong recruiting class took a hit today after incoming freshman SG Avery Morissette was dismissed from the team after being arrested for operating a hot air balloon without a license. According to police reports, Morissette flew a hot air balloon on a sightseeing adventure for six hours last Sunday. Morissette landed safely on the Fairfield campus, but lacked documentation that stated he was capable of operating the machine.

When reached for comment, Fairfield Basketball Coach Patrick Beilein responded, "Avery made a terrible mistake. Basketball should be the furthest thing from his mind right now. He needs to spend time with his family until he gets this whole thing sorted out."
