Game 5 vs. Samford

Stingy Defense Pushes Bobcats past Bulldogs 88-59
The Bobcats forced the Bulldogs in to 21 turnovers and outscored them by 20 in the second half. The Bulldogs attacked relentlessly all night, both on defense and offense, leading to a 21 to 1 free throws attempted advantage. “We got up in them on defense and attacked them on offense.” Coach Bell said after the game. “We were the aggressors all night and the final score shows that.”

The Bobcats had 5 players in double figures led by Freshman Manny Horner’s 18 points and Redshirt Freshman Steve Rogers added 16 points off the bench. “I got some extended minutes because of the lead and I was able to get comfortable out there.” Rogers said after the game “Eddie is a senior and I know I have to wait my turn but I showed what I can do tonight.” Matt Staff contributed his solid play with his second double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Game 6 @ Long Beach State

Texas State Rides a Hot First Half, Holds on Against Long Beach St. 75-69
The Bobcats shot an eye-popping 70% from the field in the first half. They took a 50-30 lead in to the half time break. Whatever Dan Monson said to the 49ers it worked as they held the Bobcats to 7-21 (33%) from the field in the second half. However, it was not enough and the Bobcats buckled down in the final minutes. “Of course I didn’t want to see us squander a lead like that” Coach Bell said after the game. “But we got stops when we needed to and that’s all that matters.”

Matt Staff had his 2^nd straight double-double and third of the season posting 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Bobcats also got strong bench play in the game, specifically Steve Rogers and Maury Torres. Torres had 8 points and 6 rebounds while Rogers contributed 5 points and 6 dimes. “Matt got into foul trouble early in the second half,” Torres said after the game. “It was important for me to come in and give coach good minutes.” The 50 points in the first half were a high for the Texas State Bobcats under Bell’s tenure.

Game 7 @ San Diego

Wild Finish to Regulation pushes Bobcats past Toreros in OT 91-83
Texas State and San Diego played a wild one on Wednesday night. Marcus Parham stole the ball under the Toreros basket and laid it in as time expired. The game was then sent to OT where the Bobcats dominated. “Hell of a come back by the guys” Coach Bell said after the game, “We pressed a lot more in the second half to speed up the tempo and that really worked out in our favor.” The Bobcats shot 29 free throws making a ridiculous 27 of them.

The Bobcats were lead by their leaders tonight. Matt Staff and Eddie Rios both had 24 points while Rios had 8 assists and Staff had 12 rebounds. “We got the pick and roll working well with me and Matt,” Rios said after the game. “We were able to pick apart the D from there.” Freshman Manny and Horner and Marcus Parham had 2 very solid overall games. The duo combined for 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. The Bobcats went a surprising 2-0 on their two game California road trip.

Game 8 vs. Pacific

Bobcats Push Winning Streak to Four, Beat Pacific 70-60

The Bobcats made their presence known in their 70-60 win over the Pacific Tigers. The Bobcats held a 34-20 rebounding advantage including a 12-2 advantage on offensive rebounds. The Bobcats had 14 second chance points. “Our big boys came to play tonight.” Coach Bell said after the game. “No only Matt, but Maury and Parham both played physically in the paint all night.” The win pushes the Bobcats to a 6-2 record on the season.

Matt Staff continued his streak of double-doubles finish with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Eddie Rios really came on in the second half and finished with 17 points. However, the bench was the star of tonight’s game. Basil Brown, Maury Torres and Sam Rogers combined for 23 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds. “Coach let me run the offense late in the game.” Rogers said after the game. “I liked having me and Rio in the back court. I was able to create and kick it to him for open threes.”

NEXT: The Bobcats are off for finals week, but resume play at home against California State-Bakersfield on the 16^th.

Are The Bobcats in the Hunt for Walt Clayton?
The early signing period has come and gone and Texas State was unable to secure in LOI’s in the early signing period. However, the buzz around the recruiting circuit is that the Bobcats are in the running for the services of point guard Walt Clayton. Clayton, a Mcdonald’s All-American, is the 20^th overall prospect and the 9^th overall shooting guard prospect in the upcoming year. Bell who grew up with Clayton’s high school coach Kevin Macklin, has been to Oklahoma City to see Walt play on more than one occasion. Coach Bell,”There is no doubt he is a 5 star prospect. The kid can shoot, pass and defend.” Texas State is in his top 2 with many believing is leaning more towards Tulsa, who has also offered a scholarship.

Bobcats on the Recruiting Trail
Clayton is not the only player the Bobcats have been hard after. They have been chasing two local Texas players. Both point guards; Belton Berry from Houston Texas is a 4 STAR rated player and is the 66^th overall player in this year’s class. “Belton is more of a floor general than anyone. He can get the ball in the right player’s hands and lead a team. That’s what you want out of your PG.”
The Bobcats are also hard after James Childress, a 3 STAR recruit out of Plano Texas. He is the #280 ranked prospect in this year’s upcoming class. “James can shoot the hell out of the ball. He can really stroke it from deep, so I think he would be able to play some shooting guard as well.” Coach Bell said.

Game 9 vs. CSU-Bakersfield

Bobcats double up Road Runners in second half, win easily 82-58
The Bobcats dominated the second half of what was close contested game in the first half. Texas State outscored Bakersfield in the second half 48-24. “I was really displeased with how we played in the first half, to put it lightly.” Coach Bell said after the game. “The second half was a different story though.” The Bobcats extend their winning streak to 5 games.

The inside presence of Maury Torres and Matt Staff absolutely had their way inside all day. Torres (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Staff (7 points, 8 rebounds) did anything and everything inside leading to a +10 rebounding margin. Eddie Rios was hot from behind the arc giving the Bobcats the inside-outside attack they’ve been looking for all season. Rios finished with 27 points and 8 assists.
