Lakers able to get defensive stops down the stretch to defeat Kings
Key blocks by Howard, Bryant, spark Lakers to fourth straight home win

LOS ANGELES - Taking on another division opponent this early in the season the Lakers were looking to continue their dominance on their home floor after a opening night loss.  It took a total team effort and the final minutes of the fourth quarter to enjoy the Lakers "block party" against the Kings en route to a crowd roaring 102-97 victory.  Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant put on what many called a "block party" that covered a three minute span late in the game along with Pau Gasol as the three of them combined to block 8 shots in a row to hold off any chance of the Kings closing the gap and having a chance for a win.  Dwight Howard led the "block party" for the evening with 5 blocks in all, while Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol each had 3 blocks for the Lakers who finished with a game high 13 blocks total.  Pau Gasol also finished with a team leading 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds while Kobe Bryant added 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as six Lakers finished in double figures scoring on the night.  Dwight Howard after a couple of low key performances managed to do be more effective on the offensive end finishing with 15 points while grabbing 6 rebounds, hitting 7-12 shots from the field.  His defensive was at an all time high against Kings center DeMarcus Cousins especially in the fourth quarter, blocking 4 shots (3 of them on Cousins).  Cousins seemed to let frustration get the better of him, finishing 2-10 from the field with 6 points, but did manage to grab 16 rebounds in the game.  Former rookie of the year, Tyreke Evans led the Kings with 19 points and his backcourt mate Aaron Brooks added 16 points and 3 assists.  The Lakers jumped out quickly to a 10 point lead after the first quarter, 27-17 and saw that lead dwindle all the way down to one point heading into the fourth quarter, 67-66, but outscored the Kings 35-31 in the final quarter to win their second straight and fourth in a row at home.  The Lakers dominated the inside game, outscoring the Kings 54-36 in points in the paint and in second chance points, 20-12.  The loss was Sacramento's third straight and third loss in four road games to start the season.  These two teams won't have to wait long for their next meeting, as the Lakers travel up to Sacramento following their current home stand on the 21st.  The Lakers will get ready for their toughest matchup on their home stand as the San Antonio Spurs come to town for a Western Conference showdown on Tuesday.

Lakers get biggest win of early season in battle with Spurs
Despite blowing 16 point lead, Lakers hang on in the end

LOS ANGELES - Halfway through their six game home stand and the Lakers got their biggest matchup to date in the early season as the San Antonio Spurs made their way into town, carrying with them the league's best record (6-1) and a winning streak of their own (5 straight) including winning all four of their road games so far, but the Lakers who have taken advantage of the time spent here at home and on the practice court were more then up to the task of what many said was not the matchup they would've predicted after what has transpired so far this season in Los Angeles.  It was your ususal Spurs vs. Lakers regular season game with defense being at the forefront of both teams strategies, but it was the Lakers offense that was the difference in the game, or at least the first quarter.  The Lakers led by as many as 23 points in the game and despite being outscored 73-63 in the final three quarters, their performance in the first quarter was enough for them to hang on and pull out a scrappy 94-88 win and snap the Spurs five game winning streak and extend their own to three games.  Dwight Howard brought his best performance against the Western Conference powerhouse, finishing with a team high 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while blocking 2 shots and hitting 8-14 shots from the field in the game.  Kobe Bryant once again put his efforts in other areas that he felt the Lakers needed help in finishing with 17 points, but pulled down 9 rebounds and dished out 6 assists.  Steve Nash recorded his third double double of the season with 10 points and 11 assists and the bench was an added advantage for the Lakers with Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks each scoring 9 points apiece.  Tony Parker spurred San Antonio's comeback that fell short finishing with a game high 22 points and handing out 4 assists, while hitting 8-13 shots from the field.  Manu Ginobili, off the Spurs bench added 17 points and collected 4 steals while Tim Duncan added 13 points and grabbed a game high 16 rebounds.  No other Spurs player reached double figures, while the Lakers had all starters in double figures and two off of the bench just miss the mark.  Kobe Bryant opened the game leading the Lakers charge in the first quarter, finishing with 10 of his 17 points in the first and providing the Lakers with key rebounding and passing to hold off the Spurs in the final quarter to pull out the win.  It was by far the Lakers most impressive win of the season despite seeing a once 23 point lead dwindle down to single digits at home.  The Lakers have seemed to have found a comfort zone on this home stand, now winners of three straight with three games remaining.  They will get some much needed rest over the next couple of days before returning to the court to host the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Lakers get torched by Suns and firery bench production
Lakers offense nowhere in sight with Dwight at helm

LOS ANGELES - It was bound to happen sooner rather then later, but the Lakers would've liked to have had a full arsenal behind the breakout performance of Dwight Howard since joining the Lakers.  Everyone knew that he would unleash his entire package that was expected of him when the Lakers traded for him back in August, but recovering from back surgery and being hampered with a sore hamstring had held him back both offensively and defenisvely the first couple of weeks of the regular season, but against the Suns, Howard put injuries aside and went out and had his way with Phoenix throughout the game.  Just to bad that the rest of his team left their game at home or at the practice facility because the Lakers had nothing to match the young legs of the Suns guards in what was Steve Nash's first game against his former team, but sooned turned out to be a laughing joke by the end of the third quarter as the Suns torched the Lakers and ran them off their home floor behind a 99-84 loss and snapping the Lakers three game winning streak and five game home winning streak in the process.  Dwight Howard scored a game high and season high 31 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while hitting 13-21 shots from the field, but that alone was not enough to overcome a hot shooting Suns bench especailly guard Sebastian Telfair in limited minutes.  Telfair match a team high 15 points while just playing 15 minutes, hitting all four his shots from the field (including 3-3 from behind the three point line) and hitting 4-5 from the free throw line.  Goran Dragic, once Steve Nash's backup and once traded by the Suns but resigned over the off season also tied for a team high 15 points and dished out 8 assists for the game.  Marcin Gortat recorded a double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds and former Laker Shannon Brown added 12 points off the Suns bench.  Phoenix scored a season high 37 points in the first quarter en route to having a 23 point lead at one point in the game as they led from opening tip to end.  Kobe Bryant finished with just 13 points, going 6-16 shooting from the field and Pau Gasol was a non factor throughout the game finishing with just 1 point on the night.  It was an embarassing defeat as most of the soldout crowd headed for the exits just as the fourth quarter was beginning.  No doubt, the Lakers felt the embarassment after the game as many walked off the court with towels over their shaking heads.  The Lakers will hope to rebound from a disasterous performance when they host the Houston Rockets on Sunday in the fifth game of the home stand.

Game Notes
The Lakers are wrapping up their six game home stand with just two games remaining and hosting the Houston Rockets tonight. The Rockets (5-4) have won four straight after losing four in a row earlier this month and are in the middle of a three game road trip. The Lakers (5-4) had their three game winning streak snapped by the Suns on Friday night and suffered their fist loss on this six game home stand. Dwight Howard reportedly has no further issues with his sore hamstring while the Rockets are without Greg Smith who is recovering from a separated shoulder that occurred in their season opener.
