76ers - 2012-13 Matchday 9 Review

Richardson returns with 24 to help 76ers to 98-95 defeat of Jazz

The Utah Jazz are the newest victims of the Philadelphia 76ers' new-found home form as they were beaten 98-95 in tonight's game. Marking their 3rd straight game at home after their victory over the Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia produced on offence when they needed to with 46% shooting from the floor and backed it up with the defensive pressure required for them to defend their lead in another wire-to-wire victory. This defense was most noticeable in the 16 turnovers that they forced of the Jazz and their 5 clinical blocks. In what was an odd circumstance, Utah dominated on the glass despite going down on the scoreboard.

Philadelphia's rampant offense began from its very first offensive possession and lasted right through the quarter. They shot 66% from the field and 71% from downtown in an offensive display that gave them a decisive advantage by the end of the quarter. Utah's offense was lethargic and ineffective at best with only 41% of their 17 shots falling in the first quarter. Ball handling was an issue for the Jazz as they committed 6 turnovers that led to easy 76er points on the break. They were also outplayed in the paint as Philadelphia took the first quarter easily by a margin of 33-21.

Utah hit back in the second quarter with a rampant offensive period of their own. Shooting 60% from the floor, the Jazz had the edge in this quarter offensively including winning the battles in the paint and on the glass. Philadelphia shot a disappointing 33% for the quarter but were able to gain some easy points after another 5 Jazz turnovers. A good portion of the points came from both benches in the typically bench dominated quarter as Utah took the second 29-21 to shave the 76ers' lead at halftime to 4 points.

Defense was the name of the game in the third quarter as both teams looked for alternatives to make up for their drying offensive production lines. Utah focused most of their attention to the paint with 10 of their third quarter points coming inside the lane. Philadelphia were forced to act and blocked 2 Jazz shot attempts while forcing 3 more turnovers. With their advantage on the glass, the 76ers chose to explore a more outside game and with 60% from beyond the arc, they were able to muster up a 47% shooting quarter to take the third 23-19 to extend their lead to 8.

For the second game in a row, the Philadelphia 76ers were subject to a fourth quarter fightback from their opposition and Utah played to their strengths as they attempted to snatch a road win. They shot 42% from the floor and used the paint as their focal point of offence throughout the quarter with 14 points in the paint. Philadelphia looked at many an occasion during the fourth that they were going to crack under the pressure of the Utah fightback after going ice cold from deep and losing the battle on the glass. However, the 76ers did enough as they managed to hold on for the win despite Utah taking the fourth 26-21 to set the final margin at 3 points.

Mo Williams was the best performer for the Jazz today with 24 points and 9 key assists running the point. Gordon Hayward provided a healthy contribution to Utah's cause with 17 points shooting 60% from the field as well as grabbing 7 rebounds. In his first appearance since being rested by his team, Jason Richardson provided the game high scoring output from the bench as he shot 64% on his was to 24 points. Jrue Holiday once again showed his importance to the 76ers franchise with yet another double-double running the point. He scroed 15 points and threw 10 assists while also stripping the Jazz of possession 3 times.

Philadelphia will be hoping to now make it 3 wins in a row when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers in their next game. Utah continue on the road and head to the nation's capital to take on the Washington Wizards.

Rumour: Bynum for Ellis

RUMOUR: Blockbuster Andrew Bynum for Monta Ellis trade in the works

It seems as though C Andrew Bynum has already had enough at the Philadelphia 76ers. A source with knowledge of the situation speaking on the condition on anonymity claims that Bynum is frustrated with his role in the 76ers' offensive structure and has asked management for a trade. Another source who has a leak on the situation claims that the Milwaukee Bucks have offered star SG Monta Ellis in what would be the next big blockbuster trade since Dwight Howard was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Orlando Magic in August.

Ironically, Bynum moved from the Lakers to the 76ers as part of that trade to make room in the roster for Howard. The last trade that Ellis was involved in had him sent from the Golden State Warriors to the Bucks for 2005 #1 draft pick C Andrew Bogut.

It is understood that more pieces would need to be added to the trade for both parties to be perfectly satisfied with letting their star player leave for the Eastern Conference rival. It is possible that the likes of Nick Young, Thaddeus Young or Dorell Wright could be included in the trade on Philadelphia's side while Milwaukee could look to ship off players like Ersan Ilyasova, Samuel Dalembert or Larry Sanders as part of the trade. Both Bynum and Ellis are unrestricted free agents at the end of the season provided Ellis chooses not to pick up his player option on his contract so the implications of this potential trade would only be felt until the end of this season unless contract extensions are negotiated.

Philadelphia first noticed Ellis in play this season when he dropped a career-high 53 points against them in what was a spectacular performance from him and his team as they took the win 96-93. In the same game, Bynum was disappointing as he only managed to score 8 points and grab 5 rebounds which is half his usual production based on last season's numbers.

Philadelphia have had noticeable problems finding a combination that works within their shooting guard ranks as Jason Richardson, Nick Young and Michael Redd have all competed for spots in the 8-man rotation that the 76ers are playing this season. Ellis would provide a secure starting option that has proven production night after night. Milwaukee have made no secret of their desire for a dominating big man similar to the impact that Bogut had on their team when he was healthy. They also have Brandon Jennings running the point as a high level offensive option so the potential for him to work more off the ball would be appealing to the Bucks franchise looking to elevate Jennings into a future star player. So in terms of the bigger picture, this trade makes sense for both teams and it would not be of any surprise if this trade is eventually confirmed.

I really like this trade idea! A backcourt of Jrue and Monta would be very entertaining. Your team definitely needs scoring, and that is exactly what Monta brings. You still have Spencer Hawes as a serviceable center too. I think that the deal makes sense for Milwaukee too.

It will be interesting to see who else is involved with this deal if it happens. I wouldn't want to give up too much just in case Monta decides to walk at the end of the season.

Being my only legit follower as it appears, I agree with you in every way. This deal makes sense and I think Jrue will just become even more of a beast with Monta beside him...he'd be stupid to leave the 76ers at all...well, more on that later I suppose!

Game Notes
The Philadelphia 76ers continue their impressive 5 game home streak as they play host to the Cleveland Cavaliers looking to find a way to kickstart their season. Philadelphia have been hot recently on their home court and yet another home game for them could well mean more to come. The Cavaliers were no match for the 76ers last season as Philadelphia won all three matchups between the two teams.

For Cleveland, they defeated the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 in their last outing which was a rare offensive showcase for the league's lowest scoring team so far this season. Their offense clicked for their entire game as they managed an outstanding 52% from the floor while doing just enough on defense to stop the Mavericks from shooting as well as them. Kyrie Irving was the best on court for Cleveland. He scored 29 points at a ridiculous 86% from the field as well as throwing 5 assists and grabbing 5 rebounds. Samardo Samuels performed well as a replacement for the injured Tristan Thompson with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Thompson has been suffering from a Broken Finger and did not feature against the Mavericks so he is not expected to play tonight.

For Philadelphia, their last game was a 98-95 win over the Utah Jazz at home. The 76ers were in the right place at the right time in all aspects of the game and they had to be against a Jazz outfit who had only just recently had their 6 game winning streak snapped. Jason Richardson made a spectacular return to the Philadelphia rotation with 24 points coming off the bench shooting 64% from the field. Star big man Andrew Bynum disappointed once again and his days as a 76er may be numbered as rumours surfaced of a blockbuster trade sending him to Milwaukee for Monta Ellis. He is yet to publicly comment on the rumours.

76ers - 2012-13 Matchday 10 Review

Double-doubles aplenty as 76ers beat Cavaliers 105-95

The Philadelphia 76ers have continued their impressive home form this season winning their third straight game as the Cleveland Cavaliers were dispatched 105-95 led by several terrific individual 76er performances. The incredible season from long range that the 76ers, tied for number one in 3PT FG%, have been having continued tonight as they shot 45% from downtown as part of their 45% overall shooting performance. Their defense also did enough to consign the Cavaliers to their usual bottom of the league offensive output including blocking a ridiculous 7 Cleveland shot attempts and forcing 10 turnovers.

The first quarter could not have started any better for Philadelphia as they raced to the early lead behind a perfect 7 makes from their first 7 attempts. Despite their offence cooling towards the end of the quarter, they still managed to shoot 57% for the quarter and 42% from deep. Cleveland were able to create a lot of chances on offence thanks to their domination of the offensive glass but were not able to capitalise on their advantage as they shot 33% for the quarter and a dismal 28% from long range. Philadelphia came out to start the game in a better state than Cleveland and it showed as the 76ers took the first 30-26.

Offensive production cooled in the second quarter and the battle of the benches fell the way of the Cavaliers. Philadelphia struggled with their shot all quarter as they managed to shoot only 35% from the field. Their offence was not helped in any way by the 4 turnovers that they committed but they bounced back to gain control of the glass before the end of the quarter. Cleveland improved on their percentages from the first quarter as they shot 45% from the floor during the second quarter. This allowed them to spread offensive production across their bench and take the second quarter 24-21 to cut the 76er's lead at halftime to just 1 point.

After the break, the 76ers sought to gain a larger advantage on the scoreboard and put the game beyond all doubt. As the quarter rolled on, they did exactly that. Shooting 47% from the field and dominating every aspect of the stat sheet, Philadelphia began to shot Cleveland who the better team was. The Cavaliers struggled as a result of the 76ers' rampant quarter. They shot a respectable 41% but never quite had the will to keep pace with Philadelphia as bad ball handling and foul trouble made a mess of their third quarter. The 76ers' lead stretched to 14 at the end of third as Philadelphia took it 30-17.

With the game somewhat beyond any doubt, both teams decided to take it easier in the fourth quarter knowing that there was no need to put any major effort in at all during the quarter. Despite this, both teams had productive quarters. Cleveland shot 44% from the field and an even 50% from deep. Their work on the offensive glass again created extra opportunities for them to score and they appeared to take advantage of this. Philadelphia shot 42% from the floor during the fourth quarter and their defense was working best for them as they were busy forcing turnovers and blocking shots. They managed to hold on for a 10 point win after the Cavaliers took the fourth 28-24.

Cleveland's largest contribution tonight came from Kyrie Irving who put on 20 points for his team. He was assisted by a stellar effort from C.J. Miles who scored 17 points off the bench. Jrue Holiday was the best on the court for the 76ers tonight as he scored 22 points and threw 10 assists to record one of three Philadelphia double-doubles in this game; the other two came from big men Thaddeus Young and Andrew Bynum. Nick Young was the other high-level performer tonight with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in what has been a great run of form for him since taking over the starting shooting guard role.

Cleveland return home for a return match against the 76ers next on their schedule. Philadelphia have a home game against the Raptors to negotiate before heading to Cleveland for the return fixture.

Game Notes
The Toronto Raptors check in to Philadelphia to take on the 76ers who complete their 5 game home stand tonight. This run of games at home has been very successful for the 76ers with 3 wins out of 4 during this stand. Tonight marks Game 2 of the season series between these two teams with the first game being played in Toronto. Philadelphia ran out winners in that game 93-91 behind Jrue Holiday's triple-double despite DeMar DeRozan providing a solid 29 point outing for the Raptors.

For Toronto, their last game was a 93-90 win at home to the Orlando Magic. Offence was not the key matter in deciding this game but there was enough of it from the Raptors to ensure they took just their 3rd win of the season. Their free throw numbers, 92% tonight, were phenomenal as would be expected by the number 2 team from the line this season. DeMar DeRozan once again provided the hot hand for the Raptors with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Toronto will be without Andrea Bargnani again tonight as he is still out of action with a dislocated finger; he has not rendered himself unavailable with his injury but is still not expected to feature tonight.

For Philadelphia, the great home run for them continued with a 105-95 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their last outing. Their offence and defense worked favours for them, especially as the number 1 outside shooting team worked wonders from deep once again and there were some inspirational individual performances that saw three players register double-doubles. Jrue Holiday was one of those players as he scored 22 points and threw 10 assists to be the best on the court for the 76ers. Nick Young provided another solid performance since taking over the starting shooting guard role with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

76ers - 2012-13 Matchday 11 Review

Philadelphia's winning run now at 4 as 76ers beat Raptors 86-84

The Philadelphia 76ers have concluded their 5 game home stand with their 4th straight win as they defeated the Toronto Raptors 86-84 to take a 2-0 lead in their season series. Philadelphia ultimately led wire-to-wire but nearly threw their lead away late in the game after a resilient Toronto refused to call it a game. The 76ers shot 41% from the field for the night and had an unusual 30% showing from deep. However, a fair portion of the points Philadelphia put on were in the paint and they were the more successful team in this part of the court. The Raptors came close but not close enough and there are a number of pointers from the stat sheet that may help to explain why they couldn't get it done. Most notable were the 10 turnovers they committed and their loss in the battle on the glass.

The game started as a very even encounter which was to be the overall tone of the game. Philadelphia shot 52% from the floor during the first quarter but did not make a single 3 point attempt which is rare for the best outside shooting team in the league. Toronto shot 42% for the quarter and had a field day from deep as they didn't miss a single long range shot. Their bench was also active from the moment the first substitution was made and contributed to the scoreline well. However, the 76ers took the first 24-22 and held the advantage going into the second quarter.

The long range shot was not appearing to be a shot that was playing kind to either team tonight and the second quarter was evidence of that. Of the 4 attempts that both teams collectively fired, only 1 76er attempt fell. As a result of that, both teams had to find their points other ways and both resorted to getting into the paint and getting high percentage buckets and drawing fouls getting them to the line for free throws. Philadelphia were more effective from the foul line as they shot 87% on their free throws but only managed to shoot 42% from the field for the quarter. Toronto managed 47% shooting for the quarter and their more effective offence allowed them to take the second quarter 25-24 to restrict the 76ers to a 1 point halftime lead.

The offence dried up significantly as both teams came out for the third quarter and some of the shots being attempted were questionable at best. The quarter had the biggest impact on the Raptors who shot a dismal 20% for the quarter and were not assisted in any way by their 4 turnovers that helped to significantly limit their offensive opportunities. The 76ers shot a more manageable 39% for the quarter and had a perfect quarter with the ball. Every other stat seemed to go the way of Philadelphia as they were able to take the third 19-11 to give them a 9 point lead going into the final quarter.

Cue Raptors comeback. Well at least that was what was on the mind of Toronto going into the fourth quarter and they made a good going of their attempt to get back into the game. They shot 45% from the field and 50% from deep as their offence tried everything in the book to make up the deficit. It had an effect on the 76ers who could only manage 35% as they once again struggled to maintain their well-earned advantage in late game situations. Ultimately, the Raptors fell short as foul trouble got the better of them. They took the quarter 26-19 but the 76ers held on to win by 2.

DeMar DeRozan once again showed how important he is to the Raptors' offence with 24 points and 5 rebounds. Kyle Lowry was also productive on offence with 19 points and 6 assists. Jrue Holiday was the best for the 76ers tonight with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in what has become expected of him given his early season form. Nick Young top-scored once again for Philadelphia with 18 points.

Toronto head to Charlotte to continue their road trip as they take on the Bobcats next on their schedule. Philadelphia head out on the road to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in their next game.
