Baldwin's 22 Points Weren't Enough to Get the Win in San Antonio

The Spurs exploded in the second quarter, taking a double digit lead that Chicago was unable to recover from, despite efforts by Derek Baldwin. Baldwin held scoreless the entire first half, dropped 14 points in the third quarter, allowing Chicago to cut San Antonio’s lead to single digits late in the third quarter. Spurs forward, Kawahi Leonard stepped things up as he outworked Luol Deng and scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. Deng was held scoreless the entire game though he did manage to chip in two rebounds and two assists in his 22 minutes of action.

“This is shorty from the club right?”

“Yeah.”

I’m standing in the bathroom trying to shave. Devin is going through my closet because he insists that I don’t know how to dress myself. I think he and Carmen need to back off.

“So where are y’all going?”

“She got tickets to the fight over at UIC Pavilion tonight.”

“That’s different. Who’s fighting?”

“Jonathan Gonzalez. He’s from Puerto Rico I think.”

“Dinner?”

“Definitely. Nothing fancy though. Zig Zag Kitchen over on Lincoln.”

“Cool.”

He pulls out a plaid tan and navy two button blazer, a brown sweater vest, and a blue shirt. The only thing he left on the bed were my jeans.

“This should work. Casual, but fashionable.”

“Fashionable? Are you moonlighting for GQ magazine or something? You gotta stop watching all that Project Runway or whatever the hell it is you watch on Bravo, man.”

“You’ll thank me later. Just get your *** dressed, D.”

“So how did you come across these tickets again,” I ask as the waiter places our food in front of us. She wanted to meet at the restaurant “just in case I was a psychopath or pissed her off”. I respect her cautiousness. She doesn’t know me from a can of paint.

“I have my ways.”

“I like a woman with a little bit of mystery.”

The more I found out about Alex, the more I liked. She was 24 years old, working on her Master’s degree in communications. Bartending is her second job, during the day she works at the radio station. I think that’s pretty cool. She seems to have her head on straight. No kids, which means I won’t have any baby daddy drama. Born and raised in Chicago, but her roots are in Mississippi. Southern girl. I can get with it.

“I got the tickets from my father. He was supposed to take a client, but that didn’t pan out so he passed the savings on to me. And lucky for you, you guys had some down time so now you get to take me out to dinner.”

“Smart and savvy. I like that that too.”

“You didn’t just think I was girl bartending her way through college did you?”

“Nah. I thought you were a college dropout and you worked as bartender to pay the bills. Everybody knows the strippers are the girls in college.”

She stared at me for a second to see if I was serious. I gave her a smile to let her know that I wasn’t (but I kind of was about that stripper thing), and we both started laughing.

“I like you Derek Baldwin. Dream Chaser. Future Hall of Famer.”

“Somebody has been stalking me via Twitter.”

“No stalking. I follow you. You just don’t follow me back.”

I have like two hundred thousand followers. I can’t follow them all back. I pull my phone out of my pocket.

“A-l-y-g, underscore, and the numbers seven seven three.”

“Well look at that. You do follow me.”

“I follow the whole damn team. I love the Bulls. Hello, Chicagoan right here. I started following you like right before the season started.”

I nod and slip my phone back in my pocket. This could be the start of something interesting.

“And this is where I take my leave,” she says as she leans against her maroon Nissan Altima. Graduation present from dear old dad.

I look at my watch and see that it’s almost midnight. The fights were awesome. There were like five matches on the card tonight. Of course the main even was Jonathan Gonzalez versus Norberto Gonzalez. Fight was amazing. Jonathan won by decision. I’m glad I was dressed for the occasion. I didn’t realize this was an ESPN Friday Night Fight.

Damn Devin, always knowing something.

“Well, I had a great time. I’ve never had a girl take me to a boxing match before. They like to do cute stuff like dinner and a movie. Or walk in the park or something.”

“Well, it’s still kind of cold so I was going to suggest skating, but I don’t want the city pissed at me if you get injured and ruin our chance at a title.”

“I like that title talk.”

“Hell, at the very least can you just beat Miami?”

We laugh and then I see her shiver a bit. It is Chicago and it is something like winter still.

“Well, I’m not going to keep you out here in the cold any longer. But text or call when you get home so I know you got there safely.”

She leans forward and gives me a kiss on the lips. It takes a second for my body to react, but I do respond and try not to go too far.

“Good night, Mr. Baldwin.”

“Good night, Miss Grant.”

Lakers’ Struggles Without Bryant at 100%

The Los Angeles Lakers can’t get it done in Chicago, even with Kobe Bryant back in the lineup. Bryant, dealing with a dislocated finger, played limited minutes against the Bulls. Bryant finished with 11 points and four assists. Chicago got off to a hot start with a 13-5 run in the first quarter. The Bulls got everything they wanted and more against this Lakers team. They called plays for their post players as Noah and Boozer combined for 30 points. The Bulls had 29 assists and grabbed 33 rebounds. Derek Baldwin was on a tear, filling every stat column. He scored 24 points in his 24 minutes of action.
