Re: Ryan Barrett's Coaching Legacy

Coach Barrett speaks on top targets

The signing period starts in less than a week and this is a time when some recruits are making their decisions on which schools they would like to attend, while coaches are using every resource they're allowed to use (and some of which are using more) in order to get the players they feel can impact their teams immediately. Coach Barrett of the Southern Jaguars is unusually open about who his targets are and actually spoke about them in a recent post-game conference.

Coach Barrett highlighted four recruits after his recent win over Eastern Washington. Foreign Exchange-Student Nic Friend from New Zealand is the most notable from the group that includes J.R. Dukes, Tyrone Abdullah and Drew Mankevicius. Insider reports for every player follows. If Barrett can bring all these recruits to Baton Rouge, Southern could see a turn around, quick.

Nic Friend, SG, New Zealand, NR OVR, NR POS

SHT: ? SKLS: ? DEF: A- ATH: ? REB: ? IQ: ? POT: ? SIZE: B

Nic Friend is a foreign Shooting Guard that stands at 6'5" and weighs in at about 195. He currently attends Huntington Prep in West Virginia. Nic's number one strength is that he plays a very defensive game. In the limited game film available, Nic can bee seen harassing the opposing guards all came and sending shots into the stands. He is a very hard working player, spends half the game on the floor. Little is known about Nic and like most foreign recruits he hasn't garnered any attention from a big program, only receiving interest from Southern.

J.R. Dukes, SG, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, #444 OVR, #109 POS

SHT: B SKLS: B DEF: B ATH: B REB: C+ IQ: C+ POT: C+ SIZE: C+

J.R. Dukes, the 6'2", 190 pound Shooting Guard from Baton Rouge is somebody that has been heavily scouted throughout his years of High School Basketball, he was initially a five star recruit, but after injuries he dropped down to a three star and almost every school that had been recruiting him ceased to contact, however, he can still bring a great game to a lower level school. He has a silky smoove jump shot and can shoot from inside the three point line and can even knock some down a few steps behind that. He is a very athletic defender who has worked on developing his skills over the years. Dukes played with the EZ Vision AAU Team, averaging 13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls a game. He claims to be receiving interest from two schools which are Tulane and Southern.

Tyrone Abdullah, C, Shreveport, Louisiana, NR OVR, NR POS

SHT: B SKLS: C+ DEF: B- ATH: ? REB: B IQ: B- POT: ? SIZE: A+

Tyrone Abdullah is one of the biggest JUCO prospects of the year, literally, standing at 7'1" and 270 pounds, Abdullah is one of the biggest out of all the recruits in the 2008 class. Because of his height, Abdullah is a very skilled on the defensive end and puts up good rebounding numbers, he is just as good if not better on the offensive side as he is on the defensive side, he doesn't have to be in the paint in order to get points and could be compared to Dirk Nowinzki with his style of play. While he only has an offer from Southern, he claims his dream school is Memphis and that he is receiving interest from LSU and Northwestern State.

Drew Mankevicius, C, Los Angeles, California, NR OVR, NR POS

SHT: F SKLS: D DEF: C- ATH: D REB: C+ INT: C- POT: ? SIZE: A+

Despite his stature (7'1", 295lbs), Drew Mankevicius is definitely not one of the biggest recruits in the 2008 class, little was known about him until Southern's Head Coach, Ryan Barrett, expressed his interest in the raw center. Barrett words on Mankevicius were, "Drew is a very young player that could turn become a team leader given the proper coaching, he is new to the game of basketball but is a surprisingly decent player for his experience. He is built like a professional body builder and can be a fierce post player in the future.". Mankevicius played on the Cali Ballerz AAU team, coming off the bench, he averaged 5 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 turnover a game. He is almost a guaranteed commit to Southern.

Re: Ryan Barrett's Coaching Legacy

Barrett switches up strategy, speaks on recruiting

"After the recent down hill roll we've taken here at Southern, I decided to mix up the strategy a bit and if you pay attention to recruiting news, top prospect Tyrone Abdullah recently received an offer to his dream school, Memphis. He is set to make his decision between Southern and Memphis on two days. We've also added a new target to our list, defensive Point Guard, Anatanas Petrauskas, star of the Lithuanian U18 squad and currently plays at Huntington Prep with other Southern prospect, Nic Friend."

Those were the words of Ryan Barrett in a recent post game press conference. It appears that he has changed the rotation for his Southern squad drastically, moving Freshman forward, Terrance Mills, to the bench. Insider information on Anatanas Petrauskas follows this paragraph. Sources say Tyrone Abdullah will signing a LOI for Memphis on the final day of the signing period, which is Sunday.

Antanas Petrauskas, PG, Lithuania, OVR NR, POS NR

OVR: ? SKLS: ? DEF: A ATH: ? REB: ? INT: ? POT: ? SIZE: F

Anatanas Petrauskas is the smallest guard of the 2008 recruiting class (5'6", 158lbs), but he makes up for it with his excellent defensive ability and speed. Little is known about Petrauskas, other than that he is receiving interest from Clemson and Southern and that he is currently attending Huntington Prep, in West Virginia.
