Re: In the Shadow of Legends Brandon Roy's Story

"Gentlemen, that was one hell of a basketball game! I'm very impressed with the way you fought back and never gave up. But if you guys keep getting down early like that we're never gonna be able to compete with the OKC's of the world on a consistent basis. If you guys want a trip to the finals this year you're going to have to play 48 straight minutes of balls to the wall never give up fight!"

That was coach for you. I'd learned a few things in my first week in the NBA.

1. Coach Carlisle was never ever ever satisfied.
2. Dirk, Shawn, and Vince ran things in the locker room.
3. NBA back to backs were brutal experiences.

I was feeling pretty good though despite walking out of the gym in OKC after the second night of my second double header this week. Mostly that was because I was coming off the best game of my life. 20 and 10 assists my first NBA double double and we had won!

My great night wasn't over yet though, I got back to the room about 2 AM after having dinner with DIrk and Shawn and Vince and Devin. They made me pick up the tab but I figured all things considered it wasn't the end of the world.

I checked my phone for the first time all night as I was walking through my hotel room gettin ready for bed and it had absolutely blown up.

My agent Conner Delfino had left me 15 text messages and 3 voicemails.

Everyone of them to the same extent.

Jordan wants to sign you.

So does Nike.

Michael Jordan wants you to call him tomorrow. Here's his number.

And there it was his airness' private phone number. The guy I had idolized growing up. well one of them anyway.

Jordan was the king. and it was no contest.

I texted him back even though it was 3:45 am by that time.

"I'm going Jordan, I'll call him in the morning. Take care of Nike for me."

Conner hadn't texted back by the time I crashed around 4 am Coach Carlisle had scheduled the team flight for 1 pm seeing as how we had the next two days off and he figured some of the older guys would probably need some rest.

I ended up sleeping til 11 am and as soon as I woke up enough to speak I dialed the number Conner had left for me.

"Hello?" Michael's voice calm and assured.

"Hel... hello uh Mr. Jordan. This is uh... This is Brandon Roy."

"Brandon! How are you man? Saw that game last night and you looked real good. I think you're going to be a real rising star in this league and I want you to represent Jordan shoe brand. What do you think?"

"That would be great Mr. Jordan Absolutely awesome, I'm honored."

"Don't be honored Brandon, be hungry. That's the only way you're going to make yourself into anything in this league. So listen, I'll have my assistant email you some information that'll let you go grab some jordan gear from any shoe store you happen to be near by, I need you wearing Jordan's before your game in Minnesota alright? We'll fax you the contract to sign."

"Yessir mr. Jordan, Tha thank you."

"stay healthy Brandon. We'll talk soon."

And that was that. I felt like a little kid.

I had just spoken to my idol.

And now I was endorsing his shoes! I could go get any Jordans I wanted!

It wasn't even a hard choice. My first game in Jordans I had to wear the originals. Now I just needed to find some.
