Knicks select Tim Hardway Jr. with the 24th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft

WHAT IT MEANS: If Tim Hardaway Jr. is anywhere near as good as his father was, the New York Knicks will be in good shape. New York addressed its need for a wing in Thursday's draft, selecting Hardaway Jr. with the 24th pick. Hardaway Jr. is the son of former Miami Heat point guard and longtime Knicks nemesis Tim Hardaway. The Knicks passed up several point guard prospects and big man prospects to select Hardaway Jr., who starred at Michigan.

STRENGTHS: According to someone in the room, the 6-6 Hardaway Jr. had a strong workout with the Knicks earlier this month. He showed that he can get his shot off the dribble and get to the rim. He also can be a good defender when he is engaged, according to scouting reports.

WEAKNESSES:The biggest concerns about Hardaway are his shot selection and consistency. He also needs to improve his dribble, according to several scouting reports.

BYE BYE J.R.? The selection of Hardaway Jr. can be seen as a sign that the Knicks are concerned that J.R. Smith won't be back next season. New York can only offer Smith approximately $5 million annually with standard raises over four years. Other teams with cap space, including Milwaukee and Detroit, are expected to make strong offers for Smith, a free agent. The 2012-13 Sixth Man Award winner may have to accept less money if he wants to stay in New York. Hardaway Jr. is insurance for the Knicks in case Smith decides to take his talents elsewhere.

Beno Udrih Signs With New York Knicks

Udrih, 31, signed for one year and $1.27 million, sources told ESPN.com. He will back up starter Raymond Felton along with veteran guard Pablo Prigioni, who re-signed with the Knicks earlier this summer. Udrih will fill the spot on the roster vacated by Jason Kidd, who retired to become the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

ANALYSIS: Udrih is a good backup point guard whose salary is a steal. He's a younger, more athletic version of Prigioni who can break down a defense and make plays off the pick-and-roll. Udrih is quick enough to get into the paint and heads-up about making passes, but he's not a great shooter, especially from 3-point range. He also won't have many blow-by drives on defenders, so his passing and court vision will be critical.

It was likely down to Udrih and Bobby Brown, who worked out for the third time with the Knicks on Wednesday, for the third point-guard spot. Udrih, a nine-year veteran, was likely preferred because of his NBA experience, ability to facilitate and make plays for others. Brown has been more of a scoring point guard in his overseas career who was looking to prove he can be more of a pass-first point guard on the NBA level.

With jump shooters Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith and Andrea Bargnani leading the Knicks' offense next season, the team needed another veteran point guard who could keep the offense moving for better shots. It stalled at times last season with too many outside shooters. That's why Udrih was their guy.

Also with Udrih in the mix, Mike Woodson can run a two point-guard backcourt, which he went to many times last season to keep the offense flowing. The extra pass in New York is always needed with their perimeter-style offense

Metta World Peace joins New York Knicks

World Peace and the Knicks came to terms on a two-year deal with the first year guaranteed, a league source told ESPNNewYork.com's Ian Begley. The team did not disclose terms of the deal.
The deal is worth approximately $1.6 million per season with a player option for Year 2, the source said, adding that the Knicks used the remainder of their mini-midlevel exception to sign the former Laker.

Analysis: At 33, World Peace is still a useful, physical perimeter defender, and he’s yet another veteran with extensive playoff experience to add to the Knicks’ mix. His arrival will force coach Mike Woodson to make some lineup choices: World Peace could theoretically start next to Carmelo Anthony in a small-ball lineup or be used as a reserve defender to pair alongside Sixth Man Award winner J.R. Smith. It’s possible that World Peace’s maximum impact could be in a reserve role, given the presence of Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani, two forwards not known for their defense. Come playoff time, World Peace could make for a nice defensive pairing alongside shooting guard Iman Shumpert.

Knicks acquire Bargnani in trade, sign Prigioni

Italian forward Andrea Bargnani is coming to the New York Knicks and Argentine point guard Pablo Prigioni is staying.

The Knicks announced two of their first moves of the offseason on Wednesday, the first day signings could become official under NBA rules.

They acquired Bargnani, a former No. 1 overall pick, from Toronto for forwards Steve Novak and Quentin Richardson and center Marcus Camby. The Knicks also sent the Raptors a 2016 first-round draft pick and second-round selections in 2014 and 2017.

The 7-foot center from Rome has averaged 15.2 points for his career, though that dropped to 12.7 in 35 games during an injury-plagued 2012-13 season.

Prigioni came to the NBA last season at age 35 after playing in Europe and moved into the starting lineup late in the season, sparking the Knicks to a 16-2 surge at the end. His agent said he could make around $6 million over three years.

Player of the Game: Carmelo Anthony will take home this honor. He started this season off with a bang, almost achieving a double-double, with 41 points on 52% shooting. He also grabbed 9 boards. The franchise can definitely use this production moving forward.

Surprise of the Game: Andrea Bargnani has shocked the NBA by out-performing his Raptor career in his Knick debut. Scoring nearly 20 points (17) in only 26 minutes, he shot very efficiently, going 6-10 for a 60% clip.

Disappointment of the Game: Tim Hardaway Jr., the first-round rookie, had a debut that left much to be desired. He shot 40% and went 2-7 behind the arc. His on ball defense was shaky and often stood still without the ball. Coach Woodson is hoping this is only rookie-jitters because if not, "Timmy" might shoot himself out of the rotation.
