OFF-SEASON RECAP
T'wolves add depth through free agency

Jordan Hill figures to be a major contributor off the bench for the Timberwolves.
The Minnesota Timberwolves were among the most improved according to many media outlets in the off-season. Management was very busy in the trade market. They made a huge splash by acquiring Harrison Barnes. When free agency arrived, they made another splash by signing big man Jordan Hill. He was signed to a two year contract with a player option for a third year which could total to $19.15M. Hill will be a key player backing up Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic'.

Sefolosha is one of the league's best defenders.

Next, the T'wolves wanted to bolster their defense with the signing of Thabo Sefolosha. He signed for one year at $2.00M with a team option for a second year at $2.09M. To back up Ricky Rubio at point, they signed Nate Wolters and also brought back Luke Ridnour. Lastly, center Timofey Mozgov was signed for the league minimum to add another big man. Here is what the rotation is expected to look like...
PG- Ricky Rubio
SG- Thabo Sefolosha
SF- Harrison Barnes
PF- Kevin Love
C- Nikola Pekovic'

6- Jordan Hill
7- Corey Brewer
8- Nate Wolters
9- Shabazz Muhammad
10- Timofey Mozgov
11- Luke Ridnour
12- Evan Fournier
Res- Gorgui Dieng
Res- Gary Neal

The trades have no doubt built your team into a contender. I would like to see Shabazz be developed into the player he was once touted as. Good luck. Hopefully you can make the playoffs, and perhaps more importantly, retain Love.

im trying with shabazz! I started improving his shot a bit more with development drills and now am focusing on his ball handling. I envision him as my future shooting guard but we'll see how he progresses. I expect big minutes off the bench with him for now.

T'wolves open season at home with win

Kevin Love sinks one from beyond the arc on opening night.

On opening night it was a tale of two halves for head coach Rick Adelman and the Minnesota Timberwolves. They took on the visiting Denver Nuggets. The same Nugget team that they worked out a deal with to acquire Harrison Barnes. The T'wolves sent Kevin Martin and Chase Budinger to the Nuggets in that deal. The two returned to the Target Center Thursday night. Martin started out strong in the first half with 14 points. He helped put the Nuggets up 49-43 at halftime. The other cause of the deficit was the lack of rebounding. Kenneth Faried and J.J. Hickson controlled the glass in the first half. "We did a very poor job with defending the three and boxing out in the first half. In the second half we ran through screens rather than going under. Did a much better job of running guys off the three. Then we just had to crash the boards and box out. Some times it just comes down to fundamentals" said coach Adelman.

Whatever Adelman said at halftime worked. Ricky Rubio carried that message onto the floor. Rubio's menacing defense interrupted the Nuggets flow causing Ty Lawson to turn the ball over 9 times. Rubio came up with 5 steals. After losing the battle on the boards in the first half, the T'wolves finished the game with a 37-31 advantage on the glass. Nuggets were outscored 30-18 in the third quarter. Much of that was the bench play of the T'wolves. They ended the third quarter one a 14-2 run. "That was a huge run for us. It gave us a nice lead heading into the fourth quarter. You got to give it up for the bench mob tonight" said Kevin Love. Big man reserve Jordan Hill had 11 points and 5 rebounds in just 14 minutes off the bench. Corey Brewer also had 11 points off the bench. 37 points total came off the bench. GM Wally Szczerbiak has given coach Adelman many options for his rotation. Something the T'wolves have lacked in years past. Minnesota now has their first road test against the Sacramento Kings Saturday night.

Jordan Hill brings energy off the bench with a dunk Thursday night.

Kings out-Smart T'wolves
Kings get big 4th quarter from rookie Marcus Smart

Rookie Marcus Smart scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Minnesota traveled to Sacramento to take on the Kings Saturday night for their first road test of the season. The T'wolves started off very strong in the first half. Harrison Barnes had 10 first quarter points and got the offense rolling. They ended the first quarter ahead 23-18 and maintained a lead going into halftime. "Our defense was solid in the first half. We were turning stops into baskets. I was able to get into transition for some easy baskets" said Barnes.

Unfortunately, the Timberwolves did not come out with the same energy for the second half. Instead, it was Sacramento who brought energy onto the court. The young and athletic Kings pressured the Timberwolves into 16 turnovers. 13 of those came in the second half. "We did a poor job with our ball security when the game got tight. Looking at the stat sheet...we had 13 turnovers in the second half. Can't win like that. We played tight. Needed to be more aggressive. They sure were" said coach Rick Adelman. The game ended up a tie going into the fourth quarter. Then it was time for rookie Marcus Smart to make a name for himself in this league. In the first three quarters, Smart had struggled with just 4 points on 1-7 shooting. He then caught fire with 10 points in the fourth. Smart's scoring layup with 20.2 seconds left put the Kings ahead 95-93. After a Harrison Barnes missed jumper, Demarcus Cousins was intentionally fouled on the rebound. Cousins made 1 of 2 from the line. The T'wolves had one more shot with 2.8 seconds left down 96-93. Barnes inbounded straight to Kevin Love who rose up for three but the iron was unkind. The young and up-coming Kings pulled out the victory.

Despite the loss, Barnes played well with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
