BATON ROUGE – The Tigers thought this game was going to be a cake walk, but the Cowboys had other thoughts. McNeese struck first and struck hard, leading the entire first half as LSU floundered about trying to find their offense. They manage to tie the game up before going in at halftime and then Coach Valentine decided to unveil his secret weapon: Shane Hammink. Hammink came into the game and hit a three pointer within his first ten seconds on the floor.
“When that shot went down, we knew that we could take this game over,” commented senior Johnny O’Bryant.
One thing the Tigers need to work on before getting too deep into the season is their free throw shooting. LSU missed eleven of twelve from the free throw line.
LSU will be packing up and heading to Honolulu for the Hawaii Invitational where they will face Oklahoma State.
Coach's Corner:Shane really came through for us in the clutch. We played from behind for the first part of the game, and once we took the lead McNeese was still able to hang around. We also struggled with out free throw shooting. I think we only made one tonight. At least that’s all I can remember. So that’s what we’ll be working on tomorrow in practice.

Honolulu, HI – Oklahoma State’s struggles continue this season as they lose their third game in a row. LSU found themselves in early foul trouble, which led to them trailing early in the game. They managed to right the ship and took a seven point lead before halftime. Michael Cobbins was giving the LSU defense fits as he put up 13 points in the first half. Freshman point guard Cezar Guerrero had a break out second half, scoring ten of his twelve points while tying the game three times. Johnny O’Bryant got off to a slow start, but finished with a double-double for the Tigers. Shane Hammink came through for the Tigers in the final seconds, draining a three pointer to give LSU a 63-61 lead with ten seconds to go. Marcus Smart had a chance to tie the game, but was forced to put up an errant three point shot that didn’t reach the basket as time ran out.
Key Performers
Cezar Guerrero – 12 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds
Johnny O’Bryant – 14 points, 10 rebounds
Coach's Corner:We didn’t start off on the best foot defensively. We got in foul trouble early, but we were able to pull it out. Guys kept grinding, kept working. We got rebounds, second chance points. We just dug our heels in and got after it. We had a lead, but we relinquished and then we had to fight to keep it. This time we fought and we won.

Honolulu, HI – LSU got off to a hot start out of the gate. Marquette decided to pressure the ball by going with a full court press, but they were being beat allowing for easy layups for LSU. Calvin Godfrey dominated in the first half scoring 10 of the Tigers’ 33 points. LSU dominated the inside, scoring 38 points in the paint.
Marquette’s Vander Blue tried to will his team back in it as LSU saw their lead cut to two points in the second half with 3:31 on the clock. LSU began to put some pressure on the ball themselves to slow things and force Marquette into bad shots. The Golden Eagles put up 16 three point shots, but only sank four of them.
Key Performers
Johnny O’Bryant – 12 points, 3 assists, 10 rebounds
Vander Blue – 15 points, 2 rebounds
Coach's Corner: We had the faster guards, so being able to take advantage of the full court press early on helped. Our big men got the work done inside and we were able to come out victorious.

Honolulu, HI – The LSU Tigers were dealt their first loss of the season against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Arizona State had a plan in mind and they stuck with it: get Johnny O’Bryant in foul trouble. He picked up two fouls early in the first half, causing Coach Valentine to bench him for a while, leaving the Tiger’s interior defense missing their key fixture. LSU saw themselves down by seven points at halftime.
“We are definitely missing Johnny,” said Coach Valentine. “We’ll get him back out there for the second half. We have a little catching up to do.”
Johnny O’Bryant being back in the court didn’t seem to faze the Sun Devils. Their confidence level was already high and they had the crowd behind them. Arizona State shooting guard, Chris Colvin scored nine points in a row off three pointers to push Arizona State’s lead even further, ensuring no room for an LSU come back.
“These guys did a great job in this tournament,” said Coach Valentine. “We faced tough competition all the way through. They fought hard. This will definitely prepare us for the competition we’ll face in the SEC.”
Coach's Corner: We just seemed to run out of gas at the end of this one. With Johnny getting into foul trouble early, it forced the other guys to step up. We had time holding it together without him out there. Also, there was no answer for [Chris] Colvin. He was shooting from everywhere it didn’t matter.
