Bobcats "Supplemental" Draft Review
Charlotte, NC -- Last night the Charlotte Bobcats conducted their draft of amateur players to fill out their roster. GM
Mike Nokes chose to take eight of the allotted twelve selections. Nokes passed on the recommended ten selections, saying he'll either go after a cheap free agent or just go with the youthful nine he already has. Nine? Yes, Nokes made a statement following the draft, saying
Emeka Okafor will remain with the team. Player salary is based on their pick number. Players negotiated for either a one or two year deal.
Overall Charlotte drafted four juniors, two freshmen, and two high schoolers. Any college prospect that entered the draft could go back to college if they didn't get drafted and as long as they didn't sign an agent before the draft, but would lose one year of eligibility. Juniors (or incoming seniors if you will) could retain the one year
if the NCAA rules they didn't participate enough in one of their previous years to truly have an effect on the outcome of a game.
Draft Pick Capsules
Pick #1 -
F Ryan Haughee
School: South Warren H.S. (Bowling Green, KY)
Age: 19
Ht: 6-6
Wt: 220
Salary: $1.58M
Info: Haughee potentially could’ve been a top five draft pick in this summer’s rookie draft. He’s a great shooter and a sound defender. He can even run the offense, if needed. The second chance of being a star centerpiece was enough to lure him away from starting school (and likely being a one-and-done) at Kentucky this fall.
Pick #2 -
F Adam Clark
School: Lancaster H.S. (Lancaster, OH)
Age: 19
Ht: 6-8
Wt: 270
Salary: $1.31M
Info: Clark was all set to join Thad Matta and the Buckeyes before entering the supplemental draft. He can bang it down low or step outside the arc. He may not start out of the gate with Okafor in the way, but he should see a lot of time in the rotation.
Pick #3 -
F Jason Johnson
School: Ohio (Jr)
Age: 21
Ht: 6-8
Wt: 235
Salary: $1.08M
Info: Starred with fellow draftee, Matt Nicholson, with the Bobcats as part of the “O” Zone Buster duster. Ohio’s outside shooting was what got them to the sweet sixteen and what Johnson does best.
Pick #4 -
G Josiah Cohen
School: Princeton (Fr)
Age: 19
Ht: 6-1
Wt: 175
Salary: $0.98M
Info: Known as a lock-down defender, Cohen starred at Princeton and surprised many by his decision to enter the draft. He’s also quite an athlete, competing on the indoor track team as a high jumper.
Pick #5 -
F Ryan Connelly
School: Syracuse (Fr)
Age: 19
Ht: 6-9
Wt: 190
Salary: $0.94M
Info: Raw, but talented is how scouts describe Connelly. The biggest knock is his weight, but he can rebound with the best of them and will be a key piece to the Bobcat’s bench.
Pick #6 -
G Matt Nicholson
School: Ohio (Jr)
Age: 22
Ht: 6-0
Wt: 180
Salary: $0.39M
Info: Drop dead shooter, but has trouble creating own shoot. Nicholson will make a great duo with Cohen at the two spot in situational subbing, whether the need is for offense (Nicholson) or defense (Cohen).
Pick #7 -
G Matt Bless
School: Northern Iowa (Jr)
Age: 21
Ht: 6-2
Wt: 200
Salary: $0.38M
Info: Bless came out of nowhere to enter the draft. Nokes did his scouting to find this moxie Point Guard. He does the little things right and should be the one Bernie Bickerstaff trusts to run the offense.
Pick #8 -
C Dawson White
School: Texas Tech (Jr)
Age: 23
Ht: 7-2
Wt: 235
Salary: $0.38M
Info: At one time White looked the part of a dominant NBA Center to-be. A knee injury after his freshman year caused him to redshirt and many to doubt. His inside presence and rebounding once drew comparisons to David Robinson. Can he regain those comparisions?
