Mid-Season Recap

February 13th, 2014

Salt Lake City -
The Utah Jazz's season has finally reached the All-Star Break, and they could not be any happier. They need a rest. After starting out with a 9-10 record, they've won just seven games since, as they're now 16-36. But what have we learned from this season so far?

For one, we've learned that Gordon Hayward needs to be a long-term piece. Hayward is averaging a team-high 19.1 points per game, as well as 4.4 rebounds per game, 4.2 assists per game, and 1.7 steals per game. He's also shooting 44.8% from the field and 41.8% from three. Hayward is so close to joining the 20, 5, and 5 club, which is quite the feat. Though he might not be the #1 option that we need in the future, he should be one of the cornerstones of the franchise for years to come.

Alec Burks has also come into his own this season, as he's averaging 17.9 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, and 3.2 assists per game. Burks finally broke into the starting lineup, and although it hasn't translated to team success, he's thrived in the role. Burks does need to work on his consistency, though.

Big men Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors have indeed proven that they can play together, as they are both averaging over 11 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. We also learned that Favors is such an important player for this team, as when he went down, the Jazz fell apart, which led to them being the worst team in the Western Conference.

What about the rookie Trey Burke? Burke is averaging 16.3 points per game, which is enough for 3rd for rookies. He's also leading all rookies in assists per game with 7.1 per game. Though he needs to work on his shooting consistency, Burke has shown that he can lead this team in the future.

With just 30 games left in the season, look for the Jazz to experiment in their rotations and let guys like Rudy Gobert and Ian Clark get some opportunities.

Jazz Fall to Lakers in OT

April 14th, 2014

hayward.jpg

Salt Lake City -
Neither team really would benefit from a victory, but both teams fought to the bitter end as the Lakers picked up an overtime victory over Utah. The Lakers are now just 35-46 and are out of the playoff picture, while Utah is a Western Conference-worst 26-55 following the loss.

The Jazz finish the season at Minnesota on the 16th. Minnesota is 39-42 and are officially out of the Playoffs.

Not sure what the standings are like, but if there is any possibility for gaining any ground with a win, you may as well sign some streetballers off the mean streets of Salt Lake City to face the Wolves. No sense in going and winning the game or anything, lol.

Jazz Finish Season On A High Note, Knock Off Wolves

April 16th, 2014

burkee.jpg

Salt Lake City -
After Philadelphia's loss earlier in the day, the Jazz were locked for either 29th or 28th in the NBA Standings. Since Dallas ended up winning afterwards, the Jazz are now 29th following their victory over the T-Wolves.

Utah flat-out dominated Minnesota in the first quarter, out-scoring them 35 to 8. Then the Wolves made a ferocious comeback in the 2nd and 3rd, outscoring Utah 67 to 45 in the 2nd and 3rd. Utah then got the best of Minnesota in the 4th, picking up the victory to close out the season.

Gordon Hayward was on his way to a solid all-around night, but ended up spraining his ankle in the 3rd. He did not return. Enes Kanter led the Jazz in scoring with 20 points, and he also led the team in rebounds, with 12.

Utah is now looking forward to the offseason, where they can potentially add another big piece to their core.

Haha, yeah, I went into the game with a mindset of just seeing what all of my guys can do. I gave Ian Clark a little more burn than I had all season, same as Malcolm Thomas. I really should have rested Hayward, Favors, and Kanter, though.
