Re: The Madness - Coaching Legacy of Tyler MacLeod

Tyler MacLeod named interim coach for 2007-2008 season will mostly handle recruiting duties

With the predecessor stepping down recently, a vacancy for the Binghamton basketball program left the program scrambling for a new head coach with neither assistant coach, Curtis Defares or Billy Allen wishing to step intro the head role, MacLeod, a student graduate that was seeking to get some coaching experience landed the dream job, he was officially a graduate assistant and recruiting coordinator and will likely act in such a role for most of this season's campaign.

With four open scholarships, it's needless to say that he will have his hands full for the duration of his first go about in actual duty. He has signed an official three year contract that will be heavily evaluated on his performance in the final two seasons.

Fading into the night

Not much can be said of the 2007-2008 season for the Binghamton Bearcats, they alleviated their head coaching turmoil by appointing a student graduate at the reigns and the results of a team led by two assistant coaches largely held the results that many would expect, a 9-20 record that included a first round exit to the Maine Bears in the America East tournament.

Graduating three seniors, including one starter, the Bearcats had a largely young roster and should continue to grow and develop, but this season proved to ultimately be a very forgettable performance for the New York program. The team lacked a true center and the lack of size in the paint showed it's self as a weakness throughout.

A second to last place finish in the America East will give MacLeod near free reign to experiment and try to bring his win column into the double digits, which is extremely likely, especially considering such that the team brought in a talented recruiting class that filled a lot of needs and rather surprisingly was the best class on paper, in the entire conference, landing 3 3*'s and a single 2*.

Midnight Madness concludes, Binghamton unveils starting line ups and schedule

The regular season is just on the horizon and with that, the future of the Binghamton basketball program is on the rise, after what many consider to be an extremely strong class (for Binghamton standards of course), the team has reloaded and looks for a much better campaign than their laughable 2007/08 campaign.

With the final depth chart released, three freshman hold down starting positions, a testament to this recruiting class and also the shrewd management of coach Tyler MacLeod to redshirt a player that many felt could've been a sixth man last year.

At point guard will be red shirted freshman, Marlon Beck II, Beck is a small guard that is best at playing with the ball in his hands. Shooting guard will be held down by Jordan Reed, the 6'4 junior had a huge year last year, going for 11.6 PPG and 10.1 RPG, a lone bright spot on a season of pitfalls. Moving onwards, at the small forward position will be freshman Mire Myles. Myles who was bouncing between Princeton and Binghamton before finally settling on Binghamton is undersized at only 6'3, but his true position is the 2 guard, even so he showed glimpses of excellence and proved that he is starting level talent. He likely is one of the best defenders on the team and that will be where most of his benefits lie, he needs to work on spreading the floor and his long range shooting, but he is nearly automatic close to the basket. The rest will come with work.

At the power forward is quite a peculiar specimen, with Nick Madray manning the four, Madray was fairly limited last season as he finished with 5.6 PPG and 4.8 RPG, but what is so peculiar about him is his offensive skillset, he excels at the interior and beyond the arc, his issues lies in the hardwood between those two points. He shot .437% last season and 25% from beyond the arc, look for those numbers to improve this season, especially with the emergence of their two touted center prospects. Speaking of which, it was Curtis Gai the 7'1 freshman from Pawtucket, Rhode Island that took the starting center spot. Gai is a force at 7'1, 282 lbs. His skillset is extremely raw but he has the frame of a NBA center, and that will be huge in a conference that is largely undersized. Joining him as a pivotal reserve is Chris Hammond, the 7'1 Juco transfer. The 3* center will be a close second but MacLeod will likely give a near perfect split of minutes between the two, while his frame is smaller at 215 lbs, he is more agile.

The other recruit in the class, Adam Jackson should see some good minutes off the bench as the Australian native power forward had a solid preseason work out but couldn't usurp Madray's unique skillset, he should be a good contributor with the second unit. Joined by Jabrille Williams (5.6 PPG), and Yosef Yacob (6.6 PPG) as key members of a second unit. Binghamton is one of the more deep teams in the America East conference.

Re: The Madness - Coaching Legacy of Tyler MacLeod

St. Johns makes swift work of the Bearcats

The Bearcats season got off to a rocky start as they fell to St. John's with a 47-59 decision. The Bearcats fell off in a big way after a tough start, including a 13-3 run that ended the first half of what had originally been a tightly contested game, opening the second half with two three pointers would seal the deal for the St. John's side, who dribbled out the clock, the Bearcats seemingly deflated after missing a 3 pointer with two minutes to go in the second half and already down 47-57. A late two gave the extended lead.

The Bearcats saw a huge performance from freshman 2-guard, Mire Myles who shot 7-13 from the field and played a huge part of the early performance that saw the Bearcats erupt to a quick lead, joining him in a strong performance was power forward, Nick Madray who posted a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, it was a disappointing opener for newcomers, Curtis Gai and Chris Hammond, Gai had only 1 rebound in his first career game, while Hammond shot .300 from the field and was dominated in the paint.
