NBA Power Rankings: Preseason

Power Rankings - Preseason

Here's some secret insight into the world of power ranking:

Between the Training Camp Edition of the weekly NBA Power Rankings and the annual installment that appears on the eve of the regular season, generally only injuries can cause a real shakeup at the top.

And that's what we have here as we await Bulls at Heat on Tuesday night to launch the 2013-14 season in earnest.  Indiana has lost projected super sub Danny Granger for the first three weeks of the season to rehab a strained left calf.  Deron Williams' nagging ankle woes kept him off the floor for much of Brooklyn's preseason preparations.  And Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook isn't expected back before December and after needing some follow-up surgery on his problematic right knee.

Those are the developments that had the greatest impact on our latest rankings batch, which naturally featues the two-time reigning champs in their rightful spot at No. 1.  The aforementioned health issues, meanwhile, have dropped Indy from No. 2 to No. 6, Brooklyn from No. 3 to No. 7 and OKC from No. 7 to a very uncharacteristic No. 10 since we last did this exercise in late Septemeber.  Moving up behind Miami, by contrast, are the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls, who have climbed from No. 8 to No. 4 on the strength of Derrick Rose's very positive (so far) return from more than a year out after knee surgery.

Game Notes
The NBA begins it's 2013-14 season tonight with a matchup between the teams that call STAPLES Center home as the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Los Angeles Lakers. It's not your typical opening night in Los Angeles because for a third straight season there is no championship trophy or banner raising ceremony and also because it is the Los Angeles Clippers who come into the new season with championship asspirations while the Los Angeles Lakers will begin to see what life is like without Kobe Bryant on the court as he continues to recover from a torn achilles that he suffered back in April of last season. Kobe, who was said could be out 9-10 months while recovering made headlines over the summer as he made good on his word by not only being able to walk by training camp, but he has been infact working out extensively in hopes of making his much anticpated comeback within the next month. The Clippers on the other hand were the L.A. team to watch over the summer as they were able to make a deal and bring in new head coach, Doc Rivers along with re-signing Chris Paul to max contract and continuing to strengthen their roster with the acquisitions of J.J. Redick, Jared Dudley, Antawn Jamison and Darren Collison while re-signing Matt Barnes and Ryan Hollins gives the Clippers one of the most talented and deepest teams in the league and makes them a pre-season favorite to come out of the tough Western Conference. The Lakers however did the best they could after the whole Dwight Howard saga played out with him choosing to sign with the Houston Rockets. Also the amnesty waiving of Metta World Peace means that only Steve Nash and Pau Gasol are the remaining starters from last years star studded lineup to begin this season in the purple and gold. Following the Howard departure and the World Peace amnesty the Lakers decided to go in another direction and clean house and get as much cap flexiability that they could with their big payroll. Signing former Clipper and all-star center, Chris Kaman as well as Nick Young, Wesley Johnson, Xavier Henry to one year deals and bringing back former point guard, Jordan Farmar, the Lakers are looking to the summer of 2014 free agent class as they will have only 2 players at the moment (Steve Nash and Robert Sacre) on the books with nearly $50 million in cap space to lure free agents and get things headed back in the right direction.

October 29th, 2013 - Clippers 107, Lakers 98

107     @      98

For third straight year opening night finished with the Lakers on the losing end
Chris Paul and Blake Griffin combine for 58 points in Doc Rivers debut

LOS ANGELES, CA - As the NBA opened up the 2013-14 season, Laker fans were seeking to find out just when their fallen superstar, Kobe Bryant would be making his much anticipated return from a torn achilles that he suffered in the Lakers 77th game last season.  Despite the various videos that were shown over the last month and despite Kobe Bryant reportedly to be cleared by the team doctors to begin 5 on 5 workouts, he is at least 4-6 weeks away from returning.  In the meantime the Lakers had to take the floor Tuesday night and hosting their STAPLES Center co-tenants, the Los Angeles Clippers and the debut of their new head coach, Doc Rivers, a sold out crowd filled up the arena not quite knowing what to expect from this group of players making up the Lakers roster this season.  Just last year at this time, the Lakers were putting a team on the court that not only had every starter at one point in their career be an all-star, but counting Antawn Jamison off the bench and the Lakers had six players who currently or at one point in their career make an all-star team.  Fast forward a year later and the Lakers not only have seen that number be cut in half, but now they put a team on the floor where eight players were lottery picks.  The Lakers did do one thing that they needed to do desperately and that was cut their team payroll down considerably with the new CBA repeat offender tax hits coming into the play this season, the Lakers who had the highest payroll in the league last year were able to get that down a manageable number that will still see them have to pay extra, but not millions on millions that they would've had to pay back had Dwight Howard resigned and they didn't amnesty Metta World Peace.  With no Kobe Bryant, the Lakers counted heavily on Pau Gasol and Steve Nash to be able to keep the ship afloat with the infusion of this youth movement like included the offseason free agent signings of Nick Young, Xavier Henry, Wesley Johnson and bringing back former point guard, Jordan Farmar.  Nick Young, who played down the street from STAPLES at USC, returned to Southern California following a season in Philadelphia after ending the 2011-12 season as a member of the Clippers, led the Lakers with a team high 25 points, hitting 7-15 shots from the field and going a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.  Pau Gasol added 16 points along with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 block shots and Jordan Farmar in his first NBA game since the 2011-12 season with the Nets, finished with 12 points, hitting 4-5 from three point range.  Despite the numbers however the Lakers were unable to rally down the stretch and for the third straight season were on the losing end as the Clippers held on for a 107-98 victory.  Chris Paul led all scorers with a game high 32 points and also dished out 7 assists while hitting 12-22 shots from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.  Blake Griffin finished with a double double, 26 points and 15 rebounds as did his front court mate, DeAndre Jordan with 15 points and 18 rebounds.  The Clippers were clearly dominated the Lakers on the boards tonight, 49-35 which led the 64 points in the paint and 16 second chance points.  Trailing 53-45 at the half, the Lakers came out and within the first few minutes of the third quarter found themselves staring down at a double digit deficiet with the Clippers having all the momentum, but Nick Young and Pau Gasol would lead a furious Lakers rally late in the third quarter to pull to within five points at 78-73.  The Lakers would get no closer and had several key defensive breakdowns down the stretch of the game which led the uncontested layups for Chris Paul, J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford.  Probably the stat of the night that stands out the most was the Lakers attempting 30 three point shots.  The Lakers don't get any rest just yet as they will hop on a plane and fly up north to Oakland for the Warriors home opener tomorrow night.

Game Notes
The Lakers in the second game of a back to back take on the Golden State Warriors in the Warriors season opener tonight. The Warriors coming off a great season where they made made the playoffs for just the second time since 1991 and advanced to the second round before losing to the Spurs in six games. The Warriors added former all-star Andre Iguodala to their roster to round out one of the most talented starting lineups in the league. The Lakers coming of a 107-98 last night to the Clippers in their season opener will look to avoid starting the season 0-2 for the third straight year.

Lakers unable to keep Warriors in check, start 0-2 for third straight year
Lakers helpless in second half as Warriors dominate on both ends

Oakland, CA - For the third straight season the Los Angeles Lakers have been able to get off to the kinda start that the franchise has been repeatedly use to in the past.  Since the 2011-12 season the Lakers have opened up the regular season losing their first two games and somewhat in the same fashion.  Tonight taking on the division rival the Golden State Warriors in their home opener the Lakers, who opened their season last night with a 107-98 loss to the Clippers, had little to no answer on how to keep the Warriors from attacking both the offensive and defensive rebounding throughout the game especially the second half as that would be what proved to be the difference in the game in which the Warriors outscored the Lakers 63-43 in the second half en route to a 106-82 victory.  The Warriors pulled down a league high 69 rebounds (24 on the offensive end), completely controlling the pace of the game in which the Lakers led after the first quarter, 21-16.  Steph Curry led all scorers with 23 points and dished out 5 assists while Harrison Barnes came  off the bench and added 22 points.  Klay Thompson, Curry's starting backcourt mate finished with 21 points and newly acquired Andre Iguodala had 18 points and 12 rebounds while David Lee led all players in the game with 24 rebounds.  The Warriors however were dealt an early season blow when starting center Andrew Bogut went down half way through the first quarter and was diagnoised after the game with a sprained knee and will miss the next 1-2 weeks.  Jodie Meeks in only 19 minutes off the bench for the Lakers put up a team high 21 points, hitting 10-11 shots from the free throw line and Pau Gasol added 12 points and 5 rebounds.  After scoring a team high 25 points last night against the Clippers, Nick Young shot 3-9 from the field and 1-5 from behind the three point line, finishing with just 11 points.  No other Lakers reached double figures.  The Lakers will try to avoid their third consecutive 0-3 start when they host the defending Western Conference champions, the San Antonio Spurs Friday night at STAPLES Center.
