Suns Preview: Depth Chart and Questions Heading Into Season

      2014 Phoenix Suns Depth Chart - 2014
      STARTER2ND3RD4TH
      PGGoran DragicEric BledsoeIsh Smith
      SGEric BledsoeGerald GreenArchie GoodwinDionte Christmas
SFPJ Tucker Gerald Green Marcus Morris
      PFChanning FryeMarkieff MorrisMarcus Morris
CMiles PlumleeAlex LenViacheslav KravtsovEmeka Okafor(out for season)

The Suns made a splash in the offseason acquiring dynamic guard Eric Bledsoe to add to an already athletic team. Young players Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee were also bought in to play major roles. The Suns have a new feeling of excitement thanks to young players and a new coach. There are major questions to be answered to see how far this team can go.

      1. Can Bledsoe and Dragic mesh? Bledsoe learned from and played alongside with one of the best in Chris Paul last year. Dragic is dynamic and also learned from one of the best in Steve Nash. These two point guards will start together in the backcourt. While both will get their team as the only PG they will play together a lot. They are the team's best two players and if they can mesh it will be a great thing for the Suns and create a dynamic offense.
      2. Center- The Suns will go with 2nd year player Miles Plumlee as the starter and rookie Alex Len at the center position. These kids were both first round picks and have a lot of talent. They should have strong futures. The question is how well can they lock down the paint this year for the Suns.
      3. Scoring- Bledsoe and Dragic will run much of the offense and also are likely to be the two leading guys? Who will chip in with them. Tucker, Fyre, and the Morrises are good three point shooters and Green can be a dynamic player? It appears on the surface there is no secondary option in there. Will someone step up or will this be a lingering issue? Will the Suns dip into their 4 first rounders and young players mid-season and get a scorer at the 3 or the 4?
      4. Who Plays?- The Suns have options. Bledsoe and Dragic both will play both 1 and 2. Green can play the 2 or the 3. Marcus Morris can play the 3 or the 4. Frye or Markieff can slide over to the 5 if necessary(not ideal though). There is flexibility. There will be a chance to look at some different combinations due to the one game for Markieff to start the season. Will a rookie coach in Jeff Hornacek be able to mix and match and find the right combinations in a talented, but unproven roster?
      5. Playoffs?- The Suns do have some talent. The west is very strong and deep. Most people would not bet on the Suns to make the playoffs. Can this team come together and prove everyone wrong? If not can they at least develop their young players coupled with picks and capspace lay the foundation for a 2015 contender?

There is a lot of potential here for the Suns. This could be a fun season or it can be a long season. Nobody knows how it will go. There will be heroes and there will be zeros. There will be bumps in the road for the young guys and great flashes of what could be in the future. What will we get this year? Only time can tell. Stay tuned Sun's Fans!

Player of the Game: Channing Frye 22 points 7 rebounds 3 blocks 6-11 FG, 4-8 threes, 6-6 Free throws

This game started off with both team struggling from the field. With almost 5 minutes left in the first quarter we only had 11 team points, 9 on Frye threes. Frye came out confident on his first game after missing last year due to his heart issues. Bledsoe got 2 very quick fouls and had to sit out after 2 minutes. Dragic and Lillard rallied the offenses and the score got up to 28-24 at the end of the first. Green hit a buzzer beater when he picked up a loose ball and had to throw up a turnaround jumper which he swished. We played basically even throughout the second quarter. Mo Williams got red hot and finished the first half with 13 points. Dragic, Fyre and Green lead our first half offense. Bledsoe got a third foul in the second quarter and only got 9 minutes in the first half scoring 0 points. The Blazers came out hot in the third quarter thanks to good ball movement and finding a open Robin Lopez for easy dunks multiple ties. They opened up a 4 point lead heading into the 4th quarter. Both teams played back and forth ball throughout the forth quarter. It was tied at 98 with 3 minutes left. We went on a 11-2 run thanks to a Plumlee three point play over Alridge and two clutch threes by PJ Tucker. That run opened up the lead and we hit all of our free throws to get the win. Frye left the game with 4 minutes left with back spasms but is expected to play vs the Jazz.

The Jazz had a dramatic 102-100 win vs the Thunder on opening night. The Suns were expecting a Jazz team off of likely will be their high point of the entire season to come out hard. That did not happen. We got off to a quick start and lead by 12 after one. Coming off his suspension Markieff got off to a quick start with 8 first quarter points. Plumlee added his only 5 of the game and Dragic stuffed the stat sheet with 4 points 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Lucas and Hayward both had 5 while Favors pulled down 9 first quarter rebounds. From that point on the Jazz never got within single digits. Our defense was great only allowing 80 points. We did not get much scoring from our starters as Dragic lead them with 11, but we had 3 double digit scorers off the bench lead by Green's 26. Both Morris brothers got double digits and Alex Len chipped in 7 and had his second straight 10 rebound game to start his career. We got a tough game next vs the talented and hungry 0-2 Thunder.

          Around the League:
Spurs lose Boris Diaw for 1 to 2 weeks
Grizzlies lose Prince for 2 to 4 weeks

Bulls lose Derrick Rose again, but only for 2 to 4 week
The Grizzlies, Bulls, Cavs Clippers, and Pelicans all start 3-0
The Heat bounce back to win 2 in a row after 0-2 start.

Player of the Game: Eric Bledsoe 19 points 2 rebounds 7 assists 2 steals 2 blocks 6-15 FG, 1-5 threes, 6-7 threes

We came out cold to start the game, but bounced back behind 9 first quarter points for Markieff. For the second game in a row he was red hot in the first and didn't do anything afterwards. Dragic added 5 points and 5 assists. Perkins had a big first quarter with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Jackson added 7, but shot just 2-10. Durant was just 0-1 in 9 minutes.
We played a strong second quarter, the defense was the key to us opening up 8 point halftime lead. We shoot 46% and limit the Thunder to just 38%. Durant just 2 points on 1-5. Perkins and Jackson lead Thunder with 12. Bledsoe leads up with 12 points 3 assists, 2 steals. Green had 7, Dragic had 7 and 6 assists. The Thunder open on 13-4 run to get back into the game. We go back and forth for the entire third thanks to Durant starting to get hot and Marcus Morris scoring 12 third quarter points. We go into the forth quarter with a 2 point lead.
The back and forth nature of this game continued in the 4th. Dragic and Green hit big threes for us early in the quarter. Durant drilled a three to tie it at 88 with 4 mins left. Fyre scored 4 straight for us while Ibaka and Durant it shots to tie it at 92 with 3 minutes left. We went back and forth for a while with noone scoring despite some solid looks. With 40 seconds left we rebound a Thunder miss. Bledsoe gets out in transition. He had a lane to the rim and went up for a layup. At the last second a defender jumped up and Bledsoe passed it back to the wide open Plumlee for a easy dunk, that he MISSED! The Thunder got the rebound and were running. Durant got the wide open three for the lead, but he missed. We got the rebond and carried it down with 30 seconds left. We slowed it down. Bledsoe got a pick and drove to the rim and got fouled by Ibaka with 14 seconds left. Bledsoe hit both free throws to put us up 2. Thunder take the time out. Jackson has it off the inbounce top of the key. He has Durant ready to take on Tucker 1 on 1 on the wing. Bledsoe is leaning toward Durant expecting the pass so Jackson drives toward the rim. Bledsoe recovered and cut his lane off, but Jackson was able to get a good look at a floater a few feet inside the free throw line, it looked like it was going to go down, but it rimmed out. Plumlee got the rebound and passed it to Bledsoe who was fouled with 2 seconds left. Bledsoe spilt the free throws. The Thunder called a timeout and inbounded it to Jackson who had to throw up a long three, which fell short at the buzzer and the Suns are now 3-0!!!

              Clippers Lose Crawford for Year

The 4-0 Clippers came into the year hoping to contend for a title. Their "3rd gun" and 6th man Jamal Crawford hit the floor hard in a win vs the Kings and had to be helped off the floor. You could tell by the look on his face that it was not good. The results of tests are in and Crawford tore his MCL and will be out for the season. The Clippers will miss his scoring and leadership. They have the guns to overcome the injury as Daren Collison, Reggie Bullock, JJ Reddick, and Jared Dudley will all see increased minutes. Nevertheless this is a major blow for the Clippers and it adds further intrigue to an already interesting Western Conference.

                  Player of the Game:
                  Goran Dragic 25 points 7 assists 9-14 FG, 5-6 3PT

The first quarter started off with a fast pace. They shoot 57% and we shoot 58% as the defenses struggled. They got 24 points in the paint and were sparked by our 7 turnovers. We were able to stay around thanks to 4 offense rebounds and 4 three pointers(Pelicans had none of both) Dragic led the way with 9 points and 2 assists. Alex Len got 6 and Green stuffed the stat sheet with 5 points 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Jrue Holiday lead the Pelicans with 8 points and 3 steals. Davis and Brain Roberts each scored 5. Evans only scored 2 points, but had 6 assists. The Hot shooting continued for both teams into the half as both teams finished the half 56% from the field. The Suns were able to open up a 7 point lead thanks to 7-13 shooting from three and 6 offensive rebounds compared to 2-6 and just 1 offense rebound for the Pelicans. Bledsoe had 8 points in the second quarter and finished the first half with 8 points and 7 assists. Dragic has 11 and 3 assists. Alex Len chipped in 10 of the bench on 5-5 from the field. After not scoring in the first Frye hit two threes in a row to help us open the lead. Holiday leads the Pelicans with 11. Davis had 9 and Gordon had 7 in the second and finished the half with 9 points and 3 steals. Both teams cooled off as the Pelicans shot 30% and we shot 36%. We did hit 4 threes compared to 0 for them. A few timley shots by Dragic and Green stopped potential Pelicans runs. We headed into the 4th with a solid 10 point lead. Jason Smith and Gordon lead the Pelicans with 15 each. Dragic and Green are pacing us with 17 and 16 respectively. In the 4th we go back and forth again. We do not put our foot on the gas and knock them out. Instead we let them hang around. Holiday tried to lead them back with 13 4th quarter points. They cut it down to 6 several teams and had open looks from good shooters several times to get it down further, but they missed every time. A huge sequence occuired with 4 minutes left and with us holding a 6 point lead. Bledsoe missed a open three. The Pelicans got the rebound and hit Aminu running up the floor. He drove it and had what appeared to be a open layup. PJ Tucker blocked him from behind. Plumlee got the rebound and flug it up the floor to Dragic who was standing alone at the other end for a easy dunk. That 4 point swing made it a 8 point game rather than a 4 point game. They still hung around until Dragic hit a dagger jumper with 1:05 left to make it a 7 point game. We hit our free throws and hold on for the win and snap the 3 game losing streak.

                    Player of the Game: Batum 29 points 4 rebounds 3 assists 3 steals 12-21 FG, 3-7 3PT

Only one word can be used to describe the first quarter: disaster. They shoot 55% from the field and 75 % from thtree. We shoot 29% from the field and 36% from three. They had 12 points in the paint and we had two. They opened up a 19 point lead at one point. We ended the quarter on a 9-0 run on a three by Green, a three by Dragic and a corner three from Tucker with 0.5 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to 10 after the first quarter. It would have been a 11-0 run, but Green missed a wide open dunk off a Dragic steal on a fastbreak. Batum scored 10, Lillard scored 7, and Robin Lopez added 6 points and 4 rebounds. Green lead us with 8. Dragic had 5 points and 4 assists , but shot just 1-6 on the field. We completely flipped the switch in the second quarter. We shot 61% from the field and 57% from three while they shot 35% from the field and 40% from three. We end the quarter with a 3 point half time lead after being down by 19 mid way through the first. Lopez led the Blazers with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Batum had 13 and Lillard had 11 points and 3 steals. Green went off in the second quarter scoring 14 points to finish the half with 22 points on 7-9 from the field and 4-5 from three. No one else had more than 7 for us as Dragic had 7 and Bledsoe had 7 points and 7 assists. We started the third trading hoops for a while. We went on a run in the middle of the quarter and opened up a 6 point lead with 5 minutes left. Portland went on a huge run at the end to open up a 6 point lead. Matthews scored 9 and Batum scored 8 to lead the Blazers. Bledsoe scored 8 to lead our offense in the quarter. Batum leads the Blazers with 21, Lillard had 18, Lopez had 17 and Matthews has 14. Green did not score after his great first half. Bledsoe had 15 points 5 rebounds and 11 assists through 3.

The Blazers dominated the early part of the 4th and opened up a 16 point lead with 6:30 left. We cut that to 8 with 3:50 left thanks to 7 Tucker points and 5 Fyre points. Down by 9 with a minute left Dragic hit a three. With 38 seconds left Dragic found Bledsoe for a dunk on a fast break and Bledsoe was fouled and made the FT: We had a chance to get a stop and go for the tie. Lillard hit a floater over Bledsoe and was fouled and hit the free throw to give them a 6 point with 25 seconds left. We missed the next shot and Portland ran out the clock.

We have another horrible defensive first quarter as the Nets go 14-18 from the field and get 10 assists on those 14 field goals. We shot just 6-19 from the field and 2-9 from three. The only reason we are even close is because we are 8-11 from the line and forced 4 Nets turnovers. The only scoring we got was from our bigs as Markieff got 10 off the bench, Len got 5 and Frye got 4. Three other guys have 1 point and that was it. Dwill lead the Nets with 8 and 4 different guys had 4 points for them. We bounce back with a better second quarter as we hold the Nets to 38% while shooting 56%, but still trail by 6 at the half. Markieff leads us with 15 points. Len has 9 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Bledsoe had 8 in the second quarter and also has 3 assists. Kirilenko leads the Nets with 11, Dwll has 10 and KG has 8 points 3 rebounds 1 steal and 1 block. We play basically even in the third as both teams played solid defense and hit some timely shots. The Nets ended up with a 2 point edge and take a 8 point lead into the 4th. Markieff leads us with 18 through 3 quarters. Frye hit two threes in the third to give him 13 points. Through three Kirilenko leads the Nets with 19, Dwill has 16, KG and Lopez both have 10. In the 4th the Nets defense locks us down. They kept up the scoring and we could not. This turned this game into a another double digit loss for us.

Both teams get off to a hot start as we shoot 48% and they shoot 62%. in the first quarter. We played another bad defensive quarter as Vasquez leads them with 11(in only 4 minutes) and Cousins had 6. Tucker has 10, Green has 8, and Plumlee has 4 points and 6 rebounds for us. We play our best quarter of the year in the secondas we shoot 65% from the field and 50% from three and hold them to 35% and 14% respectively to open up a 10 point lead at half. Vasquez and Cousins have 16 a piece for the Kings. Tucker has 15 on 7-7 from the field. Green has 8. Marcus Morris has 7. Bledsoe has 7 points 5 assists and 2 steals. The Kings controlled most of the third cutting it down to 4 points at one point. We went on a 7-0 run toward the end to extend our lead to 11. They scored the last bucket to get within 9 heading to the 4th. Cousins has 22 for the Kings, but 5 fouls through 3 quarters. Vasquez still has 18 and noone else has more than 8. Tucker leads us with 22, Frye has 11 and Green has 10. No one else has more than 8 for us either. We start the quarter on a 20-4 run to open up a 20 point lead. We did enough to hold the double digit lead without ever putting them away for the rest of the game. Dragic had 8 and Markieff had 10 in the fourth as we get a nice convincing win.

We got off to a strong start going up 21-13 thanks to back to back threes by Channing Frye. They respond with a 11-2 run which put them up 24-23 with 17 seconds left in the first. Frye's three at the buzzer end that run and gave us a 2 point lead heading into the second. Frye scored our last 11 points of the quarter to finish with 11 points. Bledsoe had 6. Dragic had 4 points and 3 assists. Cousins and Mclemore lead the Kings with 5.
Both teams had their moments in the second quarter, we out did them in the beginning of the second. They came back strong in the middle part of the quarter and we finished up strong. Ultimately we outscored them 32-26 to take a 58-50 half time lead. Our backcourt lead the way this quarter with Bledsoe scoring 10 and Dragic getting 7. The Kings showed balanced in the first half with Cousins and Salmons getting 8. Thornton, Thomas and Mbah A moute all had 6. In the third our offense goes off scoring 36 points while holding the Kings to 33% and recording 7 blocks in the quarter. Marcus Morris who is getting big minutes because of Tucker foul trouble scored 10 in the quarter and now has 15 and 9 through 3. Our backcourt continued its dazzling play as Dragic had 8 and Bledsoe had 9 for the quarter. Cousins was the only King doing anything as he scored 10 in the quarter. Not much to say about the 4th as we put our foot on the gas and complete the blow our. Both Dragic and Bledsoe had great games getting 30 a piece. Dragic got into the paint more which is something the coaching staff has stressed to him. Bledsoe hit 4-6 from three which is very encouraging considering he had been shooting 15% from downtown on the season. This is what the Suns pictured when they put together the Dragic-Bledsoe backcourt. Marcus Morris stepped up with 17 and 12 while getting extra minutes thanks to Tucker's foul trouble. All in all we took care of business in getting both wins in the back and back.

Player of the game: Eric Bledsoe 26 points 7 assists 2 steals 11-16 FG

The Bobcats start the game on a 6-0 run. We step up and dominate the rest of the quarter behind 15 PJ Tucker first quarter points. We shoot 56% and hold them to 38%, yet only lead by 4 thanks to 4 missed free throws and the fact we didn't force a turnover. Marcus Morris had 5 points for us. Zeller lead them with 8 points. Two former players from Kentucky lit up the second quarter. Bledsoe started off the second quarter with a bang getting dunks on our first three possessions, two of them are three point plays. He scored 10 in the quarter to lead us. Michael Kid-Gilchrist scored 10 in the quarter for the Bobcats. Both teams shot over 50% in the half. We hit five threes compared to 1 and they dominated the paint with 32 PIP compared to our 18. We got the best of the second quarter scoring duel out scoring them 30-28 to take a 6 point lead into half. Tucker finished the half with 19 on 7-11 from the field. Bledsoe had 12 and 5 assists. Marcus Morris added 10 off the bench. Jefferson and MKG led the Cats with 10 and Kemba pitched in 6 points and 6 assists. Both teams continued their hot shooting into the third as we go 55% from the field and they go 53%. We hit 5 threes, to their 0. They hit 12 free throws to our 12. All in all we out scored them 31-30 to grab a 7 point lead heading to the 4th. We had a balanced quarter, as one didn't really stand out. Jefferson had 8 and Sessions had 6 for them in the quarter. Jefferson and Tucker are the leading scorers with 18 and 24 respectively. We suffer a blow 2 minutes into the 4th as Frye fouled out after just 9 minutes of play. The Bobcats proceed to open the 4th on a 13-1 run to take a 5 point lead. We answer with a 16-6 run to take a five point lead with just 2:38 left. With 1:44 left we were up by 4 and got a stop. We were coming back down looking for the game clinching hoop. We missed shots and got 3 offense rebounds(2 for Plumlee, 1 for Dragic) and reset the possession each time. After the third one we kicked it out to Bledsoe to run down clock, but Henderson stripped him, got the steal and got a dunk to make it a 2 point game with 38 seconds left. We get the ball back and run down the clock. Bledsoe tried to drive in off a screen and roll, but was cut off. He bought the ball back out and looked for a lane to get a shot off, but couldn't find one so he kicked out to Marcus Morris(getting big minutes because of Frye's foul troubles) who drilled a deep three with the shot clock expiring to give us a 5 point lead with 14 seconds left. The Bobcats got the ball back, but took too long and didn't get a shot until MKG drilled the three with 0.3 seconds left. We inbounce before they could foul and we win!
