Garrett Scores 26 in Magic Victory; Lowry Suffers Torn MCL, Out For Season
TORONTO - For one team, the reaction was elation for gutting out a hard-fought victory. For the other team, the reaction was not so much disappointment as sadness, not because they lost the game, but because they lost their leader.
Ben Garrett scored 26 points and Victor Oladipo added 16 points and 14 assists to lead the Orlando Magic to a 118-111 victory over the Toronto Raptors Saturday. DeMar DeRozan had 31 points in a losing effort, while Kyle Lowry added 21 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. But the stats put up by Lowry will not be what the basketball world will be talking about.
Late in the 4th quarter, with the Magic still trying to hold off the Raptors, Lowry went up to take another shot, trying to add to his 21 point total. When he came down, he immediately buckled and fell to the floor. The Raptors bench and the crowd immediately stood up as Lowry writhed on the floor in pain. Carried off the court by trainers and EMTs, x-rays and tests were run to see the extent of the injury. It was as bad as feared. Lowry tore his MCL, meaning that his season, and perhaps the Raptors' playoff chances, is over.
"You never want to see anyone go down to such a catastrophic injury", Orlando Magic head coach Jacque Vaughn said in a post-game press conference on Saturday. "It's even more horrible when it's one of the league's best players. I think I'm speaking for the entire Magic organization when I say that we're all hoping for as speedy of a recovery as possible for Kyle."
Ben Garrett, meanwhile, was both ecstatic about his performance and heartbroken for Lowry. "As a rookie, I guess I've never really thought about having such an injury so early into my career. When it happened right in front of me, I knew that there's never too early of a time to wonder. It was horrific. I hope to never see anything like that again."
Though the talk surrounding this game was about Lowry's injury, there was still plenty of time to talk about the game itself. "It was a very well-played game pitting two teams against one another that may meet again in the playoffs", Vaughn said. "The Raptors brought out the very best of this Magic squad, and my boys responded to the best of their ability. If they can recover from this Lowry injury, I think they should still easily make the playoffs."
The Magic, who moved to 8-4 on the season with the win, quickly flew back to Orlando, as they have a game on Sunday against the 3-8 Philadelphia 76ers at the Amway Center. The Raptors, meanwhile, fall to 9-4 and must regroup for a game against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.
