The
Kevin Love era in Minnesota is officially over after the Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers came tot erms on a blockbuster trade. Minnesota will send Love,
Kevin Martin,
Ronnie Turiaf, and a second round pick to Cleveland in exchange for
Dion Waiters,
Anthony Bennett,
Anderson Varejao, and two first round draft picks.
After days of negotiations, the two teams finally closed the deal just days before the start of the 2013-2014 NBA season. First year Timberwolves GM
Tennell Williams got a pretty nice return for a superstar that no longer wanted to be in Minnesota. They get the number one pick in this past June's draft in Bennett, and up and coming two guard in Waiters, Varejao's expiring deal, and multiple first round picks to start their rebuilding process.
Waiters, Bennett, Varejao While the Wolves reuild, the Cavaliers are banking on the addition of love will help them reach the playoffs for the first time since
LeBron James left in the summer of 2010. A combo of Love/Irving should get the Cavs a playoof spot in the weak eastern conference. Cavs owner
Dan Gilbert's main objective in making the deal was hoping the addition of Love will help lure back James this summer when he can opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat.
"We just acquired three great players and some valuable draft picks that will help this team down the road, said Williams. We would like to thank Kevin for all the years he played here in Minnesota but it was time for a change. It's the start of a new era for Timberwolves basketball."
