Player of the game: Peter Boehm - 21 pts, 7 reb, 1 blk, 3 stl
EVANSTON, IL - This game was straight up ugly to watch. Neither side had an impressive performance today. Both teams have done very well to start the season. But tonight did not show the best of either team. Harvard had one of the worst shooting days this season while Northwestern had an even worse day. The first half was very tight. Both teams were playing aggressive defense which resulted in several fouls. Lin and Swiatek found themselves with 2 fouls before the 10 minute mark of the first half. Both sides struggled to get any successful runs going in the first half because of the poor shooting. The second half was much different than the first. Harvard came out electrified. They started out the half on a 10-0 run, holding Northwestern scoreless for 4 minutes. That was what set up an explosive second have for the Crimson. They continued to dominate over Northwestern. It seemed like a bit of a block party for Harvard as they got a season-high 10 blocks today. This was definitely a statement game for Harvard.
Here is what Coach Holt had to say: "That was an interesting game. We just had issues shooting the whole game. Neither side was able to get anything to drop. It was like there was a lid on the rim throughout the game. We managed to get some shots to drop in the second half, but we still didn't shoot that well. Hopefully we can shoot better tomorrow against UNC Greensboro."
Player of the Game: Doug Miller - 15 pts, 15 reb, 2 blk
GREENSBORO, NC - This game was a tale of two halves. The first half was watching a UNC Greensboro team go toe-to-toe with a Harvard team that just looked uncomfortable. Harvard was playing a fast-paced game that they have not played for several weeks. Coach Holt was furious throughout most of the first half. He burned 3 of his 5 timeouts to try and correct this. Some of the eager play resulted in terrible shots and bad fouls. Swiatek and Wright both found their ways to the bench quickly because of sloppy defense in the post. Boehm, Kenyi, and Lin all shot poorly in the first half. Thankfully, Kenyi and Miller were able to get some offensive rebounds to get some second chance points and keep up with the scoring of UNC Greensboro. The second half was much different. UNC Greensboro started to fall apart as the half progressed. Their starting 5 began to make sloppy passes and were throwing the ball all over the place. Harvard began to buckle down and make more shots. Swiatek and Wright got 4 fouls quickly again in the second half, but that was fine because Miller was dominant coming off the bench. His 15 rebounds were crucial in Harvard's win. They extended their win streak to 6 with the win today. They look to add to this next week and possibly go into conference play with a 10-game win streak.
Here are the comments from Coach Holt: "This week has just not been a good week for shooting. It's either that or it's this road trip. We have a week off, and we plan to run some shooting drills to correct this issue before it really becomes an issue. We were not playing our game tonight. Sure we got the win, but I'm not to proud of how we did it. We managed to win while having sloppy play. [Doug] Miller gets a lot of credit for his hard work though. He had a double-double coming off of the bench. He's been working hard all season and it really helps in tough games. [Jeremy] Lin also came in big today. He's been sitting back the past few games but really contributed today with a double-double as well. His passing was spot on."
Player of the Game: Max Kenyi - 29 pts, 4 reb, 3 stl, 6/7 3-pt
MALIBU, CA - The 6-game win streak comes to an end today. In a strong showing throughout the first half it looked like Harvard could extend their win streak to 7. However, the second half was more than disappointing. The Crimson were struggling to find other scorers and just had issues getting shots to fall. The defense looked flat. Pepperdine was able to burn the Crimson defense on simple cuts and screens. Turnovers also played a huge role in the second half. Harvard did well to maintain control of the ball in the first half, but the offense just looked sloppy throughout the second half. The Crimson did try to make a run for the lead in the last 5 minutes, but Pepperdine had the momentum and was too far away for Harvard to even get close.
The toughest loss of all in the game today is that Keith Wright got injured quickly in the game. He suffered a hyperextended knee and could be out for a month. The sophomore PF is a key scorer and rebounder for the team. He averages 12.3 PPG and 5.6 RPG.
Here is what Coach Holt had to say: "This was a tough game. We did well in the first half. We got out in front and held on to the lead. That's always the goal for the first half. The second half we just fell apart. Our offense was sloppy. There were easy shots that were missed and just poor control of the ball led to easy points for [Pepperdine]. And the defense just was lazy. No one was moving on their toes and were just focused on their man. We need to do better work on maintaining the same level of play from the first half to the second."

Player of the Game: Peter Boehm - 21 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The loss of Keith Wright has truly hurt the Crimson. Two days now equal two losses. Harvard went from a 6-game win streak to a 2-game losing streak. They lost two close games. Today went into overtime. Harvard has changed their approach to the game. Instead of trying to find good shots they are trying to make plenty of 3-pointers. Boehm was struggling from beyond the arc today. At the end of the second half, Harvard managed to put together a 12-2 run to tie the game heading into overtime. A last-minute shot made by Miller was what sent the game into overtime. Overtime got off to a quick start. Both teams started scoring quickly. Within the last 2 minutes, Central Connecticut began to pull away on an 8-2 run. Today was a tough blow for the Crimson. This game was supposed to be an easy win but ended in a tight loss again. With the loss today Harvard is now 0-2 in overtime games.
Here is some of Coach Holt's comments after the game: "Too many bad shots. Way too many bad shots. We are not a strong 3-point shooting team and we addressed that issue and that's why we went on the 6-game win streak. Now since [Keith] Wright is out we changed our play style, and it obviously isn't working. Their center alone had 11 rebounds. We can't give up that many offensive rebounds. When we do stuff like that we hand them the game. And free throws are what helped them win the game. We gave them too many opportunities at the line and that's one of the many reasons that we lost today."
Player of the Game: Jeremy Lin - 20 pts, 4 reb, 6 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - After nearly a two week break Harvard managed to come out and get a big win near the end of the non-conference schedule. The Crimson did very well today in nearly all aspects of the game. They shot much better than they have in the past few games. One thing that still managed to be a problem was the 3-point shooting. Boehm was really hurting the team from behind the arc. He did not make a single 3-pointer today going 0/8. Kenyi was on fire from the field. He was struggling to find his shot in the first half but in the second half he caught the hot hand and was making most of his shots. Another area that the Crimson thrived in was on the the boards. They were out-rebounding Corpus Christi the entire game and kept crashing the boards all the way to the end. It's good that they were able to break the losing streak today. And it was also nice to see Wright back on the floor.
Here is what Coach Holt had to say about Wright's return: "Did he return too soon? We really aren't sure. He looked good out there today and never seemed to be in pain. There was a bit of a gimp in his step. For the time that we gave him he did really well. We didn't expect him to go out and give us all that he did. Will he play against Cal Poly? I'm not sure. That will be a game-time decision. We might let him rest so he can be as healthy as possible for when we play Princeton."
Player of the Game: Max Kenyi - 11 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast, 2 blk, 2 stl
CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard finished their non-conference schedule strong. Today was a good win for Harvard. They got out to a quick lead and never looked back. They started the game on a 10-0 run and then continued to dominate the floor. At the end of the half they went on a 12-0 run to go into the locker with a 45-23 lead. The second half the Crimson did not play as well. There were some poor shot choices but did not hurt the lead. Both Miller and Swiatek are dominating the boards down low. They had a combined 24 rebounds, of which 7 were offensive rebounds. There was a little bit of bad news coming out of the game today. Late in the second half Boehm appeared to injure his shoulder. He looks like he'll be ok. He is going to get an MRI tonight and Coach Holt will most likely make a game-time decision about him for the Princeton game.
Here are Coach Holt's comments on Boehm's injury: "He's a tough guy. His shoulder was bothering him a bit after the game. Our trainer said that it is probably nothing major and most likely won't miss any games. He is getting his MRI tonight and once we get that we'll release what is wrong with his shoulder. If he has to miss then he will miss. We want what's best for him and the team. If we play him prematurely then he could mess up his shoulder even more. Hopefully this is nothing too severe but you can never be too cautious with injuries."

January 1 marks the beginning of conference play across the nation. The Ivy League begins with Harvard and Princeton. Harvard has been playing well up to this point. They lost Wright a few weeks ago but he is listed as questionable for the game. Boehm's shoulder injury is nothing major. All that was released is that it is a "sore shoulder." On paper, the teams seem to be equally matched. Harvard has not done well on the road this season. And they also haven't done well in close games. Princeton is coming into this game on a 2-game losing streak. They have traveled for much of this season so they have not had the luxury of playing at home too often. That will change over the next 2 months during conference play. They have a strong offense, putting up the second highest PPG in the conference (Cornell is first). They are also very good at pulling down rebounds. This will truly be a great start to the Ivy League Conference play.
