SFC pulls away late, Sheppard down hurt

On the strength of Tristan Smith's game-high 21 points, St. Francis (NY) came out victorious over Mount St. Mary's, 56-50, and notched their 11th win on the season, 5th in NEC play. Neither team really had a grip on it until late, so naturally there was some good back and forth action.

Smith was the main offensive threat all day for SFC, even during their awful run of shooting in the first half (12-32, Mt. St. Mary's shot 9-28 by comparison).

In the second half, again it was Smith who built the lead, than helped hold it. His 3 with 7:44 remaining made it 36-31, and made it 41-36 a little later with a second 3.

He hit another with 2:58 left to push the lead to 50-41, and that would prove to be the difference in the 56-50 win. However, SFC got a bit of a scare when Allan Sheppard went down hurt, appearing to clutch his shoulder. He had already been playing with a stiff neck, so we'll have to keep an eye out on his condition there.

Smith, after hitting a few free throws late, ended with 21 for SFC, no one else ended with more than 8, and that is a cause for concern with Coach Delaney.

Another nice shooting performance by Smith, he has really turned into the star of the team. With the #'s he has put up lately maybe he will have a chance to the Conference POY

St. Francis (NY) (11-6, 5-3) VS. Wagner (10-4, 4-1)
Spiro Sports Center
Staten Island, NY
January 15, 2006

McLemore leads Seahawks in OT victory

At least the defense held up most of the way.

Wagner, who at the end of the day will sit in second in the NEC behind Sacred Heart (1/2 game back), stifled St. Francis on D, got good and timely shooting from DeEarnest McLemore to roll to a 67-58 overtime victory.

Both teams shot abysmally in the first half (9-29 for SFC, 9-30 for Wagner) en route to a 25-23 Terriers lead at the half.

SFC would gain their largest lead of the game 1:19 into the 2nd half, when Tristan Smith hit a free throw to make it 31-23 after 2 straight SFC baskets.

After Matt Vitale cut the deficit to 2, Allan Sheppard hit both his free throws, and Smith got 2 baskets of steals to push the lead to 8 once again.

Unfortunately, the offense kind of stopped after that. Devon Neckles missed a pair of free throws, missed another layup, Smith's mid range jumpers and threes weren't falling.

McLemore hit a layup to grab the lead back and cap a 10-2 run with 2:30 left.

Christian Brown sunk a 3 to make it 45-43 SFC, but McLemore got a crazy runner to drop with 2:08 to go.

Vitale would hit a lyup to tie at 47 with 57 ticks on the clock. Neckles would hit a go-ahead layup the next time down, but James Ulrich tied it again at 49 with 39 seconds left.

After a questionable backcourt call (the ball didn't appear to be over half court before Smith stepped back), Wagner held the ball and went for the tie, which went out and sent us to OT.

Wagner took the lead on a pair of McLemore freebies 25 seconds into OT and held the lead the rest of the way. SFC only scored 9 points in the OT frame compared to Wagner's 18 (McLemore led with 8 for the Seahawks), and Wagner won 67-58.

Smith and Brown couldn't hit a thing, and James St. Robert fouled out late in the second half, leaving the short Terriers without much of a frontcourt. Smith shot 4-26 on the game, but it is it a one-time thing?

Alex Mansour had 13 points and 17 boards for Wagner, McLemore led all scorers with 24.

SFC has a few days off before travelling to St. Francis (PA) looking to sweep the season series. Wagner comes to the Pope the next day for the rematch.

I'd say you're right, but you are wrong if you are considering how he shot the ball today. Haha. No one was on today, and that cost us, without a doubt.

Glad to have you along, Harp. Yeah, season's been a success so far, but I'm not really satisfied yet. We have a lot of room for improvement on offense, I'm hoping we can put it together for March (trying to push to get there haha, I think we have 10 games to go from this point).

Dunk City: Sheppard's jam wins it for SFC

When St. Francis (NY) and St. Francis (PA) played each other in Brooklyn 2 weeks ago, it was Rahsaan Benton who dominated for the Red Flash and kept them alive until the buzzer.

This time in Loretto, it was Darshan Luckey.

The senior small forward dropped a trio of threes in the second half, and ended with 20 on the day (not even the leading scorer; Benton had 21). But his timely shots helped keep his squad in the game the entire way.

Even more remarkable considering his team was down 15 at the half.

The Red Flash were able to peck away at the lead, and though they never quite eliminated it, they got within 5 with 6 minutes to go and never quite looked back.

Benton scored 4 in a row to make it 63-59 with 3:30 to go, but Tristan Smith stopped the bleeding with a trey to make it 66-59.

That lead was short-lived though, as Chris Jones got a runner and Luckey canned a 3 to trim the deficit to 4 (68-64).

Sean Dantzler would hit a 3 with 1:50 to go to make it 73-66. However, SFC missed their next 3 shots, and the Red Flash went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 73.

Allan Sheppard, playing well in the paint lately, got a reverse layup to go with 17 ticks on the clock, but Winston Robinson responded and tied it with 6.4 seconds left.

Smith took the ensuing inbound, made a lovely full-court pass to Sheppard, who was in 1 on 1 coverage down court, and dunked home the winner as time expired, preserving a narrow win for SFC.

SFC moves to 12-6 (6-3), and is looking to move into the top 4 in the NEC with a home game against Wagner tomorrow.

Aside from Benton and Luckey, no other Red Flash player topped 9 points. Smith led with 17, Sheppard and Dantzler followed with 16 and 15 respectively. James St. Robert logged another double double with 13 and 10.

Brown's heroics lift SFC over Seahawks

One day on, one day off.

Story of the season for SFC, who have now beaten a few of the best teams in the NEC, but lost to some of the worst.

Again tonight, St. Francis New York has beaten a top NEC team (Wagner), on the strength of a pair of huge treys at the end of the game from Christian Brown.

However, the biggest hero might have been diminutive point guard Jamaal Womack, who dumped 11 points in the first half off the bench, and carried SFC while they were shooting poorly in the first.

Womack didn't play any in the second half, but that might not have mattered. He is making a case to start at the point next year and today really helped.

The Terriers held an 8 point lead at the break, but much like the other halftime leads they've had this year, they let it slip away and Wagner got back into the game early in the second half.

Matt Vitale, who had 14 of his own in the first, would tie the game at 49 with a trey and 4:30 remaining.

The Seahawks seized a 4 point lead after an Alex Mansour lay-in, and held onto it as best as they could the rest of the way.

Allan Sheppard got a layup to make the game 57-55 with 2 minutes remaining, and Brown would respond with his first 3 of the day (first attempt too), and suddenly it was 58-57 Terriers.

Mansour got an and-one opportunity but couldn't convert, so Wagner had a 59-58 lead with a minute to go.

However, that would be short-lived, as Brown sunk another 3 from the corner and made it 61-59.

Mark Porter would hit a 3 of his own, though, and Wagner had a lead with 47 seconds remaining.

But after a basket from each side, Sheppard hit a 10 footer to give SFC a 65-64 lead.

Vitale would stop the scoring run by missing a 3 after Wagner held onto the ball, allowing SFC to grab the rebound and run down the clock to sew up another SFC win.

With Brown and Womack scoring in bunches, where did Tristan Smith play in?

Smith did have some foul trouble early, but shot only 2-15 and scored just 6 points, a season low. James St. Robert led SFC with 14, Sheppard followed with 12. Brown and Womack had 11 apiece.

Vitale led Wagner with 19, Porter and Mansour had 12 apiece. DeEarnest McLemore, who torched SFC last game, only had 8 points.

SFC moves to 13-6 and is into the top 4 in the NEC now. The Terriers continue their NEC travels with a road date with Monmouth on the 22nd.
