Re: 42 Years and Counting | New York Knicks MyLeague
In terms of an actual defensive upgrade, buyout Bargani's contract and bring in O'Neal. I know O'Neal is doubtful to play at all this season in real life but he seems like a decent paint protector from what I have seen from him in NBA 2k15

The Positives:
After a 35 point blowout loss, if you can find more than a single positive from this game, I'll give you $100 daily. Now, back to the subject. The only positive that can be taken from the Knicks perspective is that Tim Hardaway Jr. showed up big once again. Timmy scored 23 points on 75% (9/12) shooting with a trio of triples in ONLY 25 minutes. The 2nd year guard out of Michigan has started the season on fire and only one team (Washington) out of the first 5 games on the schedule have been able to hold him to under 50% shooting (5/15, but still scored 17 points). Hardaway Jr. has been proving all season that he is a reliable scoring option for this Knicks team and with James Dolan's track record, the better Hardaway Jr. plays, the more likely the chance he gets traded.
The Negatives:
This has been recurring theme for the Knicks. The paint defense and rebounding have been atrocious throughout the beginning of this season and just refuses to improve. The starting PF and C combo for the Detroit Pistons (Monroe & Drummond) combined for 31 rebounds. The entire New York Knicks frontcourt (Anthony,Stoudemire,Aldrich) combined for 27. That is pitiful. Combine that with the fact that Andre Drummond had 6 offensive rebounds, and the New York Knicks combined had a total of 6 offensive rebounds. This must be fixed if the Knicks intend to turn around this 1-4 start.

Player of the Game
Stats: 18 Points, 6 Rebounds, 11 Assists
The Positives:
Okay okay. Now I know this is getting repetitive, but Tim Hardaway Jr. is just phenomenal. He gets his 3rd 20 point game within the first 10 and there are no signs of him slowing down. By many, Tim Hardaway Jr. would be considered at best the 3rd option on the team, behind Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, and some may say 4th behind Calderon. Regardless of where you personally rank him, the boy can ball. Hell, tonight he led the team in points with 23. That is an extra point more than the team's clear cut star, Anthony, in 10 less minutes and on 13 less shots. It's getting to the point where there isn't much more I could say on Hardaway Jr., and that's a good thing for now.
The Negatives:
Another recurring theme in the "Negatives" section is the topic of paint defense. However, that was not the main problem for the Knickerbockers tonight. It was more, in general, the team's awareness on both offense and defense. The amount of turnovers produced by the Knicks (19) are just unacceptable. Another problem is the amount of fouls committed by the Knicks. The team had 5 players with 3 or more fouls, which is living quite dangerously as a team. It is noted that this could possibly mean the team is trying harder on defense, which is good don't get me wrong, but maybe they're going about it in the wrong fashion.

Player of the Game
Stats: 32 Points, 5 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 5 Steals
The Positives:
Carmelo Anthony's game winner.
No seriously. That's it.
The Negatives:
How were the Knicks even in position to win on a buzzer beater? They were awful, bar maybe Stoudemire and Smith. Carmelo Anthony shot a horrendous 8-21 and 1-6 from deep. Even Tim Hardaway Jr. shot 4-10. The two best scorers on the team had disgusting games. However, I can tell you how they won. When Dwight Howard picked up that 6th foul was the only the Knicks were able to run out of Houston with a W. Before that, Dwight was eating them inside, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Newly signed Emeka Okafor was tasked with guarding Howard after both Jason Smith and Amar'e Stoudemire picked up constant fouls, each ending with 5. Okafor did his best, but was handled, which should be expected from someone guarding the arguable best center in the NBA after taking a year off.
It's about time the Knicks have game filled with positives.
First of all, Derek Fisher made a move that not many of us saw coming. He benched both veteran point-guard Jose Calderon and young center Cole Aldrich in favor of 2nd year point guard Shane Larkin and new free agent signing Emeka Okafor. Yes you read that properly. Jose Calderon, the biggest "haul" from the Tyson Chandler deal, the $7M dollar contract Jose Calderon. Benched for an undersized point guard averaging 5.2 points and 1.7 assists in Shane Larkin. And Derek Fisher looked like a genius for it. Larkin came onto the floor and scored 12 points and dished 11 assists while being guarded by one of the best point guards in the NBA in Kyrie Irving. Shane displayed poise and the ability to run the triangle offense, reviving broken plays, finding the open man and knowing when to take the shot (magnified by his 4/6 shooting and 2/3 from behind the arc)
Secondly, the Knicks finally learned how to play defense, and they learned at the perfect time. They were facing 2 of the top 10 players in the NBA and contained them very well. The first being the best basketball player in the world, Lebron James. While Lebron did have 23 points, the sheer fact that this Knicks team was able to hold him to below 50% shooting (8/17) is a complete accomplishment on its own and not something many teams can say they do. They also did a good job on keeping him off the boards, allowing him 4, which he normally doubles for his season averages. The other person they just completely took of out the game is superstar PF Kevin Love. The Knicks just demolished Love defensively. They allowed him 14 points on 3/11 shooting. That is simply horrendous. And also when you realize that Kevin Love is considered the best rebounder in NBA and the Knicks gave up 4 rebounds to him, New York was on top of their game tonight.
The Negatives:
The Knicks just beat the best "on paper" team in the NBA and actually played defense AND adequately rebounded? They can receive a break this game. Good job guys.
The Knicks picked up their second consecutive win against the Celtics tonight. The biggest contributors to the W tonight were as usual, Carmelo Anthony, and pleasantly surprising Emeka Okafor. Okafor finished the night with a season high 20 points and 7 rebounds. Since signing with New York, Okafor has averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.5 rpg and those stats are majorly coming off the bench. Since becoming a starter 6 games ago, his averages have become 12 ppg and 9 rpg. Okafor has been a very solid player for the Knicks sign he graced that contract with his signature, finally giving the Knicks a decent presence in the paint both offensively and defensively.
The Negatives:
The Celtics' bigs all had their way with the Knicks. Jared Sullinger finished with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Sullinger isn't the prototypical big man in the sense that he did majority of his damage from the perimeter (5 three pointers made), however it is still a type of big man the Knicks must be able to game plan for. Tyler Zeller is more of a traditional, in the paint, big and he shot 7/8. The Knicks couldn't defend him at all and that is just unacceptable. Zeller finished with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Thats an extra 10 points over his average. Lastly, Brandon Bass is more of a Tyler Zeller type player but with more of a mid-range shot and he also had a big game. He ended with 17 points and 7 rebounds. The Knicks still need to improve their paint defense and defense in general, but they are definitely making strides.
Derek Fisher:Alright team. So before our last win against the Celtics, we had lost 3 straight games against the Hornets, Trail Blazers and Pelicans in that order. That is completely unacceptable. So, I'm pushing you guys extra hard today in practice and we will be running a 30 minute straight 5v5 scrimmage. No fouls, no timeouts, nothing. I'll let you guys just play and I'll observe. Now, a good performance in this scrimmage improve your role in the rotation for game to come, and a poor performance may decrease your role, so be careful nd smart how you play. But just go out there and play ball. Team A is going to be home and Team B is going to be away. Team A inbound first. *blows whistle* Lets do this. Ball in!

Player of the Game
Stats: 21 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 Steal
The Positives:
The Knicks really zoned in on an area that they normally lack/ show no effort, and that is rebounding. The Knicks had three players (Okafor, Anthony and Stoudemire) all finish with double digit rebounds (10, 11, 13 respectively). The most surprising part (or maybe not so surprising) is that none of these players even average 10 rebounds a game. These performances did not lead New York to a victory on the final scoreline, but did give them advantages in the rebounds, offensive rebounds, points in the paint and second chance points categories. This is a performance to build off of.
The Negatives:
Did anyone other than Carmelo Anthony shoot at least 50%? Okay, Amar'e Stoudemire and Cole Aldrich did, but that's it. The team as a whole shot 37 % from the field and 22% from behind the arc. If you expect to win a game shooting 37%, the other team would have to shoot about 36%... not 46% from the field and 48% from deep. Shape it up Knicks. #1 pick here you come.
