Dallas down Spurs 103-87 in season-opener By TOM WITHERS
Posted Oct 29 2015 1:58AM
SAN ANTONIO (AP) Deron Williams performance was reminiscent of his Utah Jazz days as the Dallas Mavericks out-classed the San Antonio Spurs in front of their home crowd last night.
Williams finished the game with 36 points and 10 assists, on 14-21 shooting. The last time Williams had a game of 36+ points and 10+ assists was all the way back in 2010, when he finished with 42 and 10, per Basketball-Reference.com.
New signing Wesley Matthews also put in a promising performance after coming off a season-ending Achilles injury last season, tallying 19 points to go with 4 rebounds and 6 assists in 32 minutes of play.
Things didn't look good for the Spurs from the get go, as Tim Duncan went down with an ankle injury early in the 1st quarter. He did end up returning in the 3rd, and finished the game with 10 points and 5 rebounds, albeit in 21 minutes. The injury was later found to be an ankle sprain, and Duncan won't be sidelined for too long.
Tony Parker put in a terrible performance, racking up 8 turnovers and shooting 1-6 from the field.
There was a bright spot for the Spurs however, as Kawhi Leonard stepped up, and scored 29 points to go along with his 7 rebounds. He also had 2 steals, which lead to easy fastbreak dunks.
"It wasn't a good game," Gregg Popovich, coach of the Spurs said after the game. "We just didn't execute like we usually do in season-openers. We'll just have to go back, and work on the areas that were subpar tonight."
Mavericks coach, Rick Carlisle had this to say about Deron William's performance: "I'm really proud of him. I've seen how hard he's been working during the off-season and during training camp, and I'm glad it's payed off for him. Hopefully he can keep this up and become a leader alongside Dirk for us."

Cavs defeat Knicks 87-80, start season off strong By BRIAN MAHONEY
Posted Oct 31 2015 12:46AM
CLEVELAND (AP) The Cavaliers started out their quest for back-to-back Finals appearances with a win, defeating the New York Knicks 87-80 at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday.
The formalities began straight out of the gate, as the Cavs came out with an 18-2 run to begin the first quarter. The Knicks picked up though, and fought back with their own run to end the first.
Carmelo Anthony seemed to get out on the wrong side of the bed last night, only making 3 field goals at halftime. He did turn it around after the break slightly though, finishing with 28 points on 13-25 shooting.
Aaron Afflalo was a bright spot in the Knicks off-season pickups, tallying 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 30 minutes of play.
LeBron had a LeBron game, finishing with 25, 5, and 6, to go with 3 blocks and 9-10 FT shooting.
Timofey Mozgov had a good day on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds, but had a terrible game everywhere else. After being dunked on by Sophmore Langston Galloway in the second quarter, he went down in the 4th after coming down with a rebound, tweaking his ankle. The Cavs missed his interior presence while he was out, as New York made a run to make the game interesting, before Mozgov came back in with his ankle wrapped up.
Kevin Love could not get anything going on the offensive side of the ball, not scoring a single point off of 5 shots. He did contribute defensively however, blocking 4 shots, all late in the 4th to help secure the win.
The game was hanging in the balance with a minute remaining, as the Cavaliers were only up by one possession. That's when Cleveland guard and former Knick, Iman Shumpert stepped up, receiving a pass from a running LeBron, and sinking the transition three. Shumpert finished 2-2 from behind the line, and racked up 16 points.
LeBron said this about his teammates in the post-game press conference: "I'm just really proud of my boys. In one of the timeouts we had in the last quarter, I gave a little pep talk to 'em, try and fire them up."
"It always feels good to hit a shot like that, you know?" Shumpert said. "You always want to take them shots, and I'm glad that Bron trusted me with taking that shot."
The Cavs start their season 1-0, while the Knicks remain winless, falling to 0-2.
