Magic Blowout Hornets

box.jpg

We came out strong once again. We put up 31 points on 60% shooting and held them to 21 point on 39%. Oladipo had 10 points and 4 assists including a dramatic deep buzzer beating three that was confirmed by review. Nikola played well with 7 points and 5 rebounds. Batum led the Hornets with 6. The Hornets had a strong second quarter shooting 62% from the field, but we limited them to 25 points thanks to forcing 7 turnovers. We got 23 points despite 35% from the field. We got great looks from three but only went 3-12. We were lucky to hold a 8 point lead into the half. Both teams played well in the third, but we outscored them 32-27 to extend our lead to 13 going into the fourth. Mario had a big quarter scoring 13 to give him a team leading 19. Hawes and Batum(14 each) led the Hornets through three. We blew it out in the fourth and got a comfortable win.

Player of the Game: Vucevic 23 points 12 rebounds 9-13 FG

Recap: Not much to say here. We played great on both ends and outmatched the Hornets. We got strong play up and down the roster. We got a big win as we have a tough challenge ahead against MVP candidate Lillard and the Blazers.

Al Horford and Wade are returning from injuries.
Tyler Zeller gets a 3 year 27 million dollar extension from the Celtics(I edited it up from 3 years 15 mil)
28 points 10 rebounds and 7 assists from Horford leads the Hawks over the 76ers
27 from Butler leads the Bulls over Memphis
29 points and 14 assists from Lillard isn’t enough to beat KD(35 points 8 rebounds 12 assists) and RW(26 points 9 rebounds 12 assists)
34 points 15 rebounds 3 steals and 3 blocks from AD leads the Pelicans over the Jazz
Cavs beat the Thunder behind 23 from irving
26 from Kobe leads the Lakers over the Rockets

Next up: Vs Blazers(15-12)

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

Unexpected Hero Wins it for Magic

box.jpg

Our strategy was to take Lillard away and try to make the others beat us and it worked. We held them to only 36% shooting and Lillard only had 4 points(3 on a deep three, off a deflected ball). They were able to muster 23 points due to strong play on the offensive glass. We shot 53%, but went 0-3 from three, only 2-5 from the line, and turned it over 4 times resulting in only 20 points. Nikola scored 9, but noone else could muster more than 2 for us. Both teams offenses got going in the second quarter as we both scored 27 points to keep a 3 point game at half. For us Frye(9) and Harris(11) had big quarters hitting key outside shots. For the Blazers Lillard only shot 3-7, but finished the half with 10 points 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Henderson(14) and Aminu(10) took advantage of the open looks we were giving them. In the third the Blazers shot 50% for 27 points led by 7 by CJ and 6 by Aminu. We could only muster 22 points on 43%, the only reason we even stayed within 8 points was Frye getting hot toward the end and scoring 7 points to give us hope. To try and inject some scoring and energy into the backcourt, Coach Skiles put in Napier besides Oladipo, Harris, Frye and Nikola as the lineup to spark the comeback and it worked. Napier was bringing energy on both ends and running the pick and pops perfectly with Frye. He drew a couple of fouls as well to put up 4 points. Frye stayed hot and scored 11 in the quarter Nikola added a couple of timely buckets as well Oladipo hounded Lillard on the other end. We finally took the lead as Frye shocked the Blazers by rolling instead of poping on a screen and got a dunk at the rim and was fouled. We scored on our next time down the court to take a 4 point lead with 3:46 remaining. The Blazers scored the next 6 as they played lockdown defense and Lillard got a couple of huge buckets. Our next time Frye had the ball at the free throw line and he found Nikola who cut under the basket for a easy dunk to tie it at 95-95. Their next time down the court Lillard blew by Oladipo and got a dunk to make it 97-95. Our next two times down Kaman played great post defense and denied Nikola despite him getting two pretty good looks. We got a stop in between those to keep it a 1 point game. After the second Nikola miss they pushed it down and Lillard found Davis cutting to the rim, but Harris hustled back and was able to foul him with 25 seconds left preventing a easy layup. Davis missed both free throws. We didn’t call a timeout and let it play out. They shut down our first three options on the play, time was running down. We kicked it back out and swung it around the premieter. Napier got the pass in the corner and had enough space to get it off and he swish it making it 98-97 with 3.6 seconds remaining. They got Lillard the ball out of the timeout, but he missed a deep three and we pulled off a shocking win.

Player of the Game: Channing Frye 29 points 10-16 FG 5-9 3PT 4-5 FT

Stats:

blazers stats.jpg

magic stats.jpg

Recap:Frye and Nikola played great, but the rest of the team slumped. Napier who has been a DNP lately, got a chance and provided a spark. We stole a victory today, which is nice. Consistency from the guys besides Nikola has been a bit of an issue. Despite the team success thus-fare, there is some buzz of certain players being unhappy and changes being a possibility which is something to watch going forward.

Around the League:
Westbrook and Lowry get players of the week
Parker and Leonard are both now healthy for the Spurs
Melo(30 8 and 7) and the Knicks outduel Okafor(22 19 and 8) and the 76ers
Horford(28) and Spillter(25) lead the Hawks over Boston
Bosh(32) and Dragic(30) lead the Heat over the Raptors despite 32 and 13 from Lowry and 20 and 10 from Scola
Jackson(20 and 11) and Drummond(18 points 25 rebounds 4 blocks) lead the Pistons over the Bulls
Griffin(24 points 10 rebuonds 7 assists) and Paul(24 points 11 assists) lead the Clippers over the Spurs
Westbrook puts up 39 and 11 and KD puts up 27 and 11 in a win over the Lakers
33 and 9 from Kemba leads the Hornets over the Wizards
39 from George and 32 from Hill lead the Pacers over Memphis

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

Magic Trades Shake up Team and NBA

The Magic have been one of the nice stories in the league this year off to a strong start and in the middle of the East playoff picture. They have been gathering younger players and assets for a while and decided to strike. They stroke a major three-team blockbuster with the Bulls and Suns. Here is the breakdown:

Bulls trade: Nikola Mirotic, Joakim Noah
Bulls get: Tobias Harris, Dwayne Dedmon

Magic trade: 2016 1st round pick top 5 protection) Hezonja, Gordon, Harris, Dedmon
Magic get: PJ Tucker, Eric Bledsoe, Nikola Mirotic

Suns trade: Eric Bledsoe, PJ Tucker
Suns get: Mario, Noah, Gordon, Magic 2016 1st round pick

For the Bulls they are sitting 17-8 just behind the Cavs in the East, but with Rose still not 100% they are down a little scoring and had a hole at the three. Harris gives them a young scorer on a reasonable contract, who should be effective in the Bulls system. Mirotic was going under a major sophomore slump struggling heavily from the field. With the Bull's depth at the big men spots he was not getting the minutes or the starting job he wanted. He expressed a desire to be moved and this move made sense for the Bulls. They also lose Noah, a fan favorite, who has become less effective, but is still a good player. He was necessary for salary matching purposes and they still have Gasol, Gibson, Harris(who can play four), Portis, and now a young guy to develop in Dedmon. They add their scorer at the three while keeping their depth.

The Suns are sitting at 12-16 in 11th in a tough west. It would take a miracle run just to get a late playoff seed. The Suns were looking to trade Bledsoe in the offseason. They finally got the package they were looking for from the Magic. They get two major young talent and tops picks in Mario and Gordon, a first round pick, and a valuable piece in Noah on an expiring contract. There were issues with Knight and Bledsoe that the Suns didn't think could be resolved. Now they can center their rebuild on a core of Knight-Booker-Mario-Gordan-Len with depth off the bench and two chips in Chandler and Noah they can use if the need be. It is likely that those two along with Morris are also shopped for a complete tear down.

Finally the Magic. They give up a lot but Harris was not getting the shots he should have with the fast style and the other weapons. He just didn't appear to be a fit. They get Mirotic who is a stretch 4, can keep up with the fast pace offense, and help out Vucevic on the glass, plus who can pass up a Nikola-Nikola front court. The big chip however is Bledsoe. He gives the Magic a player they believe can be a star, who is still young, and on a reasonable contract. Bledsoe-Oladipo-Mirotic-Vucevic is a core the Magic believe can win now in the East and be built around for the future. The Magic are taking the risk that Bledsoe can be the guy to put them over the top with his all-around play at the point. At some point you have to stop collecting assets and try to cash in and this is what the Magic have done. They also get a guy in Tucker who can complement the core four as a solid piece in the starting lineup. A move this big however left other moves to be made to clear up the roster. With Bledsoe in the fold there was no spot for Payton and they didn't think it would be best for him or the team for him to be a backup. This how deal number 2 came together:

Magic trade: Elfird Payton
Nets trade; RHJ, Chris McCullough 17 second

The Nets get a top young player to help them build around along with Lopez. The Nets saw a chance to get a building block and took it. They gave up 2 guys they took in the 20's this past year and a second for a top 10 pick 2 years ago(who was traded for a big package) who has already established himself in the league. For the Magic Payton had no spot. In losing several young players and their first round pick they wanted to get a couple of young guys to develop and make up the depth. They see RHJ as a guy who can play behind PJ for a while and learn the league while being a stopper off the bench. The eventual goal is to him to form the best defensive backcourt in the league with Bledsoe and Oladipo and get enough offense to make it work. Chris is seen as a guy to try and turn into a rotation player. They had a couple options, but with the Magic are betting on this package.

The final trade was a minor one:
Magic trade: Nicholson CJ Watson
Pacers trade: Budinger Whittington

Watson was not working out at all for the Magic and Nicholson was never playing. The Pacers are 10-16 and looking to get back into the east race. Watson thrived for them and sures up a shady backup PG spot Nicholson gives them PF depth and a young guy. Budinger was just an expiring contract and Whittington is a guy to maybe nuture as a backup center. This was about moving unhappy guys and creating some cap room for the summer for the Magic. Finally we waived Marble and signed D-league stud Pierre Jackson to a 1 year 1 million contract with a 1 million team option. We gave him over the minimum to lure him to our team. He had a great year in the D-league and finally gets his chance. We are hoping he can bring some energy and scoring off the bench. He will compete with Napier for the minutes behind Bledsoe. Our next article will cover how the roster now looks, rotation, and the team outlook for the rest of the season.

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

New Magic Roster Breakdown

After the trades, the Magic roster is different. Here is the breakdown:

PG: Bledsoe/Napier/Jackson
SG: Oladipo/Fournier
SF: Tucker/RHJ/Budinger
PF: Mirotic/Frye/Chris McCullough
C: Vucevic/Bynum/Whittington/Jason Smith

Smith and Whittington will be the inactives most nights. The rotation will be 10 men with the second men at each spot playing. The only spot that is questionable is the backup PG spot. Napier played well last game, but has struggled to grab the job when given the chance. Before the last game Coach was using Oladipo as the backup PG. Both Napier and Jackson will get a chance to earn the spot. The only other spot that could change is maybe Budinger if RHJ struggles, but coach likes the young man's defense and ability to run the floor. The starters will be leaned on as the bench unit looks to be a little weak on fire power. We find ourselves in the middle of the playoff race in the East right now, the goals for this year are to make the playoffs and compete while building chemistry with this new group. Then the plan is to be aggressive in the offseason to fill the few holes we will have and try to become a contender next year. The Magic are moving their chips to the center of the table, while maintaining a young core. Will this approach pay off? We will have to wait to see how this group gels.

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

New Look Magic Beat Hawks

hawks.jpg

Bledsoe got off to a quick start driving to the rim scoring a layup on his first possession as a member of the Magic, but was quiet other than that. Mirotic picked up 2 fouls in his first two minutes. Frye came in and quickly scored 5 points, but left the game with an ankle injury. This resulted in unexpected mintues for Chris Mcclough(made his only FG for 2 points) Both teams shot well in a first that ended in a 24-24 tie. Millsap(8 points 5 rebounds) led them. Oladipo(7) and Bynum(5) led us. Our new pieces started to click in the second quarter as we scored 26 points on 53% from the field.. We opened up a 12 point lead at one point. The Hawks closed the half strong and cut our lead to 2. Millsap(6), Teague(5) led the Hawks in the quarter. Mirotic(10 points 5 rebounds) and Vucevic(8 points 5 rebounds 5 assists for the half) led us in the quarter. We shot 47% in the third, but only scored 22 and gave up 25 despite holding the Hawks to 41% thanks to 6 turnovers, as a result the Hawks went into the fourth with a 1 point lead. Mcclough provided some scoring off the bench as he got 6. Millsap continued to lead the way for the Hawks with 20 points through 3. Our offense clicked in the fourth scoring 37 points on 60% and hit 11-12 from the line. Oladipo had a big quarter scoring 13, and had a epic strip of Korver and a dunk that put us up 10 and was the exclamation point on a win.

Player of the Game: Oladipo 25 points 4 rebounds 10-19 FG 4-9 3PT

Stats:

stats vs hawks.jpg

hawks stats.jpg

Recap: Our new pieces fit together well in our first game together. Bledsoe make shots when he had too, but seemed more focus on running the offense in his first game. His driving and nice passing set up a lot for us. Oladipo thrived with the open looks he was getting as well as the faster pace on his way to a strong game. The additions of Tucker and Bledsoe into the starting lineup already flashed improved defense, as now we have strong defenders on all opponent wings, which was a key to us limiting a strong offensive team like the Hawks. With the new personal we played with a Princeton offense for stretches, with Nikola running action out of the high post. It worked pretty well and Nikola finished the game with his first career triple double. Lastly with Frye’s injury(only a day to day injury), McCullough got unexpected minutes and played well scoring 11 points in just his second career game(only played 1 min in the first with the Nets). The new roster is expected to be a work in progress, but we got good results game one.

Around the League:
Heat get 26 from Bosh and blow out Portland 104-65
44 from Irving and 34 from lebron leads the Cavs to a blowout over Philly despite 29 and 13 from Okafor
The new look Suns blow out the Bucks 102-84.(11 and 11 for Noah, 13 for Gordon, only 5 for Mario)

Next up: Vs Knicks(14-14)

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

Melo Dominates New Look Magic

bos.jpg

Despite the different look of our roster Melo and the Knicks came out just like the last time we played. They scored 30 points in the first on 50% from the field led by Melo with 12 on 5-6 and 7 by Galloway. We can only muster 20 points on 33%, Oladipo was the only reason we were in the game as he scored 10 of our points. The Knicks played really strong for most of the quarter on both ends opening up a 20 point lead with 4 minutes left. Grant(6) and Afflalo(6) led the way. We responded with a 16-4 run to cut their lead to 8 with 20 seconds left in the half. Mirotic(11) and Fournier(8) had big quarters. However Galloway drilled a contested three over Bledsoe at the buzzer to extend their lead back to 11 and steal the momentum we had. Melo’s big third quarter(15 points) allowed the Knicks to extend their lead back up to 16 going to the fourth. We played a great fourth quarter on both ends holding the Knicks to 18 points on 33%, while we score 32 points on 55%. Vucevic led us with 12 points and glass domination. Despite our great quarter, we blew chances to get back into the game. We had chances earlier in the quarter, but the Knicks got some big buckets and stops. We got our closest when it was too late. Fournier hit a three with 15 seconds during the late game fouling to cut it to two with 15 seconds left. Calderon hit both free throws, but we messed up by not fouling until 5 seconds were left. Off the following inbound, down 4, Bledsoe put up a three and was fouled, he shot rimmed out as we almost got a magical four point play. Bledsoe missed the third free-throw anyway, and we couldn’t foul them and we fall by 2 points.

Player of the Game: Melo 35 points 4 rebounds 4 assists 15-25 FG

Stats:
knicks stats.jpg

stats vs knicks.jpg

Recap: It looks like the trades, travel days, and the back to back took it’s toll as we came out bad. Melo gave us fits again no matter who we put on him. We saw some struggles in playing with a new roster. We’d like Bledsoe to be more aggressive in getting shots for one. Despite all this we fought back and had a chance to win in the end. Getting this group together will be a process, so this loss doesn't sting too bad.

Around the League:
Wizards sign Dudley to a 3 year 15 million dollar extension(edited it up a little bit)
Rockets lose Dwight Howard for 4-6 months, maybe ending his time in Houston
Pacers lose Stuckey for 4-6 weeks
Clippers lose Reddick for 4-6 weeks
Heat lose Green for 2-4 weeks
Bucks lose MCW for 2-4 weeks
Harden put up 40 points 9 rebounds and 10 assists in a row over the Hornets
23 from West lead the Spurs over the Pacers
17 and 12 from Gordon leads the Suns over the Jazz
37 from Paul is not enough as Westbrook both score 24 and get double doubles
28 from Okafor leads the 76ers over Memphis
30 points 7 rebounds and 10 assists from Wade as the Heat beat the Pistons

Next up: vs Rockets(18-11)

Balanced Magic Beat Rockets

rockets box.jpg

We played a good quarter outscoring them 23-20 and holding them to 41% shooting. Tucker had a big quarter scoring 9(after a high of 4 his first two games). Ariza(6) and Lawson(5) led Houston. Bledsoe(11), Oladipo(7), and Vucevic(9 points 10 rebounds(for the half)) had big second quarters as we score 34 on 60^. The Rockets also have a good offense quarter scoring 29 on 55% to stay within 8 at the half. Motiejunas(8) and Jones(7) had strong quarters to lead Houston. Houston put up 29 points on the third on 52% shooting and 5-6 from three lead by 7 each from Lawson and Jones. Thankfully we stayed hot shooting 58% to keep our lead at 10 points through 3. Bledsoe and Bynum led us with 6 each. We played strong defense in the fourth holding them to just 35% shooting, we only outscored them by one, but that was all we needed to put the game away. Bynum(6) and Mirotic(7) led us in the quarter. We also got good news after the game as Frye is ready to return.

Player of the Game: Bynum 16 points 8 rebounds 4 assists 2 steals 7-10 FG

Stats:

Recap: We had a really good offensive game shooting 53% and having 6 guys in double figures. We show versatility and balance in our offensive attack which is promising moving forward. Our defense was the most impressive holding them to 99 points Bledsoe and Oladipo did a really good job limiting Harden and Lawson which was key to the win.

Melo and Randolph get players of the week
The Nets take a chance on Larry Sanders on a 1 year 4 million dollar deal
They also lose Lopez for 6-8 weeks
Wizards lose Beal 2-4 weeks

Re: We Have the Magic-Orlando Magic 2k16

Magic Hold off Late Heat Rally

heat box.jpg

We catch a break as Wade and Whiteside are both out with day to day injuries. We play a strong first quarter, holding the Heat to 17 points on 33% shooting and forcing 6 turnovers. Despite shooting 50% we only put up 23 points and don’t take advantage of the opportunity to get a bigger lead. Vucevic led us with 5 points 5 rebounds 2 steals and 3 blocks. Winslow(4) was the Heat high scorer. Our offense put up 30 points in the second thanks to going 5-8 from three and 7-9 from the line. Bledsoe led the way with 9 points and Oladipo added 8. The Heat stayed within 9 thanks to big quarters from Deng(10 points) and Chalmers(two threes and many assists). We played great defense in the third holding them to 17 points on 38%, the offense was a bit of a struggle putting up 21, mostly thanks to Bynum(7) and Mirotic(8) to give us a 13 point lead into the fourth. The Heat had a big fourth quarter scoring 31 on 55% while we only shot 41% for 23 points. The Heat got all the way back into the game and cut it as low as one multiple times including with 1:10 left. Bledsoe got the big bucket, driving by Dragic for the dunk and the three point lead our defense held them as Bosh missed a game tying three with 5 seconds left and we got a win.

Player of the Game: Vuvevic 19 points 10 rebounds 3 steals 5 blocks 7-10 FG

Stats:

heat stats.jpg

stats vs heat.jpg

Recap: We played well once again, we opened up a big lead into the fourth. The Heat being a great team came back and made interesting. We struggled somewhat in the fourth, but made enough plays down the stretch to get a solid win. We showed strong balance with 6 guys in double figures and defense holding the Heat to 92 points.

Around the League:
Wizards lose Beal for 2-4 weeks
KG is out 1-2 weeks
34 from AD leads the Pelicans over Houston
38 from Joe Johnson leads the Nets over the Wizards
29 points and 16 rebounds from Towns leads the Twolves over the Pacers

Lebron(32) and the Cavs outduel Lillard(29 points 13 assists) and the Blazers
39 from Melo leads the Knicks over Boston
Westbrook picks up a triple double with 29 points in a win over Denver
Marc Gasol gets a triple double in a win over the Lakers

Next up: Vs Pelicans(17-13)
