Garnett, Cassell Pace Timberwolves in 118-100 Win over Nuggets
The first quarter belonged to the Timberwolves Friday night as they outscored the Nuggets 31-20. Denver shot just 6/20 from the floor and had 4 turnovers in the period. Kevin Garnett wasted no time stuffing the stat sheet as he scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists in the quarter. Denver managed to go on a couple of mini-runs to cut their deficit to as little as 5, but the Wolves answered each time. A 7-0 flurry by the Wolves to close the first half gave them a 54-42 lead heading to the locker room. Garnett had 16 points and 12 rebounds in the first half and sidekick Sam Cassell chipped in with 13 points and 6 assists in the first half.
Minnesota carried that momentum into the third quarter as Cassell connected with Garnett twice to start the third quarter as the Wolves extended their lead to 16. After Minnesota pushed their lead out to 18 with five minutes to go in the third quarter, Denver went on an 11-0 run to make it just a seven point game. But as they did to end the second quarter, the T-Wolves closed the third quarter strong as a three point flurry from Wally Szczerbiak and Fred Hoiberg pushed their lead back out to 14 heading into the fourth quarter. Szczerbiak hit his third three-pointer of the game to start the fourth to give Minnesota 90-73 lead. After Troy Hudson missed a pair of free throws that would have given Minnesota a 21 point lead, the Nuggets rallied with a 10-0 run to make it 95-86 game with 6:30 left to play. Minnesota head coach Flip Saunders admitted to keeping his starters on the bench a little too long.
“I should have gotten KG, Sam, and Spree back in their sooner. Our bench did a good job extending the lead for a bit and maintaining it, but they started to run out of gas and it allowed Denver to build confidence and gain momentum.”
After a timeout, and his Big 3 back in the game, Minnesota quickly established a 15 point lead and cruised to a 118-100 lead. Once again it was Garnett and Cassell leading the way for the Timberwolves who are off to a 2-0 start. Garnett finished with 30 points, 21 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks and Cassell finished with 20 points, 15 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Latrell Sprewell chipped in with an extremely efficient 25 points on 10-13 shooting. Minnesota got big contributions from their bench by way of Wally Szczerbiak and Fred Hoiberg who combined for 31 points and five made three-pointers.
