The Rise of Royal’s Riverside
Head coach Rob Royal is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after coaches if he were to become available in the coaching carousel, after turning UC Riverside into a Big West powerhouse.
During his five seasons he has led the Highlanders to a 103-56 record, which includes 2 regular season Big West Championships, 4 Big West Tournament Championships, and 4 NCAA Tournament bids.
Although they were eliminated in the first round of their first three appearances, they finally took a step forward this year, becoming this season’s Cinderella story and advancing all the way to the Elite Eight before losing to #1 seeded and eventual National Champions, North Carolina.
“What a wild ride that was,” said senior center Mensah Tobias, who started in all four seasons of his career with UCR. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to what was an amazing college experience, and it wouldn’t have been so without coach (Royal).”
Following the first 30-win season of Rob Royal’s coaching career, it is safe to say that there will be some big programs knocking on his door, but will he answer?
