It was Thursday, May 12th 1994 on the front page of the Houston Chronicle was "Choke City". The night before the Houston Rockets had fallen to the Phoenix Suns in overtime after blowing a 20 point lead falling to 0-2 in the Western Conference Finals. The next day, Friday the 13th the Rockets would take a 16 point victory in Phoenix and would subsequently win the next 2 games taking a 3-2 lead. The Suns would go on to win game 6 but the Rocket would win game 7 and advance to the Finals for the first time since 1986.

It was game 6 of the NBA Finals the Rockets were down 2-3 and had a 2 point lead over the New York Knicks. Daryl Morey Fired - New GM in Houston
HOUSTON, TX - The Rockets have just announced that they have fired general manager Daryl Morey. This is coming off an extremely disappointing season in which the Rockets went 37-45. The Golden State Warriors, who beat the Rockets last year in the Western Conference Finals and went on to win the championship won once again this year beating the Miami Heat in 4 games.

While the team has under performed this was a shocking move by the ownership. Morey is regarded as one of the better GM's in the league and is known for possibly the trade of the decade, James Harden to Houston. Morey embraced analytic's heavily and some believe this may be why Houston failed.

The Rockets however were not setup for success this season. They came into camp out of shape and multiple members including Dwight Howard were unable to practice at the beginning of camp. Former coach Kevin McHale expected the team to be ready to go after about a month into the season, he was fired after 11 games.

This sprung Assistant Coach J.B. Bickerstaff into the Interim Head Coach role, his first time ever as a head coach in the NBA. He clearly was not cut out for the job and was heavily criticized. The Rockets went into the All-Star Break in the 8 seed but after the break dropped rapidly to the 11th seed.

This leads to present day, following the announcement of Morey's release, the new GM of the Houston Rockets was announced, Michael Cook. He has experience as an assistant coach in the NBA and has worked in several front offices. Analytic's disbelievers will be disappointed though as Cook embraced analytic's, not to the extent of Daryl Morey but they are a factor in his decision making.

Cook announced in his press conference the team would not be looking to rebuild despite the horrid season. The Rockets will retain their 1st round draft pick as it was lottery proteced and is projected to be the 10th overall pick in the upcoming draft. Cook said they will likely use this pick and their free cap space to go after 1-2 big free agents.

It is unknown if the team will look to work out an extension with Dwight Howard. It is very unlikely though with there being trade rumors of him being moved at trade deadline on top of the terrible season, Howard likely wont be interested in resigning.

Only time will tell if it is the right decision to not rebuild but one thing is for sure, this off season will be big for the Houston Rockets.

Head Coach Elijah Nelson Hired
HOUSTON, TX - Michael Cook and the Houston Rockets have announced that Elijah Nelson a rookie Head Coach will be taking the reigns of the Rockets. Nelson has history as an assistant coach in previous teams and worked with new GM Michael Cook together on the Wizards.

Not much is known about Nelson, but one thing is for sure. Houston fans are already not happy with the new GM's moves. Fans were hoping the Rockets would hire a veteran coach with a defensive emphasis. Defensive Coach Michael Goodrich reportedly accepted the Rockets offer of a head coaching position but the deal fell through due to the Rockets signing Elijah Nelson.
