Goodrich speaks with media following debut loss at Memphis

Goodrich speaks with media following debut loss at Memphis

MILWAUKEE – Media outlets got an opportunity to formally speak with Bucks interim coach Michael Goodrich following his coaching debut that ended with a 113-107 overtime loss in Memphis.

Goodrich, who first spoke with media yesterday in Milwaukee, again voiced his ambitions to remain a candidate for the full-time job this offseason. His opening loss, however, attributed to the Bucks' sixth straight, and 23rd in the past 24 games.

“I'm not one to make big guarantees, my goal here is simply to consistently improve day-in and day-out,” Goodrich said following the loss. “If we show progress, I'm sure everyone will appreciate the growth.”

“We're in a deep hole right now but we've still got enough time to turn things around, to at least show signs of progress,” he continued. “We've got a pair of primary weaknesses - defense and rebounding - and those are both addressable variables.”

Hours after being named interim, Goodrich announced his intentions to "shake up the lineup", which was unveiled in the loss as recent trade acquisition Cameron Ramsey was benched in favor of previous starter Malaki West.

Ramsey, who debuted with the Bucks two days ago in a loss against Orlando, was acquired from the Clippers to help fill the void of rookie DeAndre Gervin who suffered a severe ankle sprain earlier this month.

“We're experimenting, seeing what works and what doesn't,” Goodrich said.

Washington lead Bucks to 108-79 blowout over Heat to snap six-game skid

Washington lead Bucks to 108-79 blowout over Heat to snap six-game skid

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Justin Washington scores over 25 for third consecutive game
  • Treyvon Dixon plays on a bruised hip against the Heat
  • Michael Goodrich collects his first win as Bucks' interim coach
MILWAUKEE (AP) – After the Bucks’ most dominant win of the season, Justin Washington said an adjustment by coach Michael Goodrich could turn Milwaukee’s season around.

Washington had 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Bucks routed the Miami Heat 108-79 Friday night to snap a six-game skid while Miami’s extended to five.

Following a performance that allowed the former all-star guard to sit out much of the game, Washington credited the victory to a new approach to points of emphasis, marquee to Goodrich’s presence on the sidelines.

“I’ve got a lot of faith in (Goodrich) after this one,” Washington explained. “The results were there, we played great and all of the things we’ve struggled with were suddenly strong suits.”

Playing on a bruised hip, guard Treyvon Dixon scored 15 points and distributed eight assists to lend a hand in Milwaukee’s feat. Dixon, however, shot a game-low 5-of-17.

BOX SCORE: Bucks 108, Heat 79

The Bucks outrebounded the Heat 57-37, which had been a major weakness of the team all season. They also contained Miami to 41% shooting and 22% from beyond the arc. In addition, the second unit contributed to 45 points in the blowout.

“I said last night that we would be experimenting our options more,” Goodrich said in regards to the bench production. “We want to utilize our guys and they really proved their worth tonight.”

Rookie Derek Sheffield totaled up 16 rebounds, five on the offensive glass, and eight point. The second unit personnel was paced by Emmanuel Griffin’s 14 points and Damarion James’ 10 and six assists.

Washington thinks Goodrich's defensive gameplan, which came after Washington allowed 100 or more points in three consecutive defeats, could lead to a turnaround.

“Today we were dialed in, playing as a unit,” Washington said. “We played a well-rounded defense, slowing down almost everything including the pick-and-roll which we struggled with all season. This was a moral victory for sure.”

Kazuki Mizushima shot a perfect 5-5 for 15 points off the bench for the Heat, whose loss came a week after being on the other side of the blowout against the Bucks with a 120-101 win at home.

Gavin Williamson added 12 points for Miami, which allowed over 100 points for the 19th consecutive game.

“It’s been a shootout lately with not much defensive fare,” Heat coach Luke Samuel said. “It has to change, not much more to be said.”

Bucks eyeing trade for veterans Gregory Livingston, Russell Blackman

Bucks eyeing trade for veterans Gregory Livingston, Russell Blackman

MILWAUKEE – The Bucks’ backcourt has proven to be their focal point, but the frontcourt has been an entirely different story. Nihat Kerimoglu dislocated his patella three minutes into the season’s second game and ever since then it’s been experimenting for Milwaukee.

ESPN Milwaukee reports that the Bucks could look to add some depth by pursuing a trade for Portland Trailblazers forward Russell Blackman or Cavaliers center Gregory Livingston, both productive +10 year veterans with huge expiring contracts.

The question, however, becomes if the Bucks have the pieces to acquire either player.

If a deal were to happen, either acquisition would give Milwaukee not only an outrageous amount of cap space for 2016, but also an extra spurt on both sides of the ball following the All-Star Break.

A report revealed just days ago that Cleveland had failed to come to a contract agreement with Livingston, who is currently recovering from a bruised hip. Along with the Bucks, the Lakers have also been rumored to be eyeing the veteran’s service.

Livingston, 34, has averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds this season. He is third in the league with blocks, averaging 2.9 per game.

With Blackman, who is averaging just over 18 points per game, Milwaukee could get a player still considered a perennial all-star. Blackman, 30, joining the Bucks would mean a starting lineup headlining fellow high scorers Treyvon Dixon and Justin Washington.

But again, both deals seem unlikely unless a third team gets involved. The Bucks have only been actively shopping forward Emmanuel Griffin and guard David Goodrich, neither who are intriguing trade bait.

Kings, Bethea, cruise past the Bucks 109-64

Kings, Bethea, cruise past the Bucks 109-64

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jameel Bethea scores 40 points against the Bucks
  • Milwaukee scores just 64 points in blowout loss in Sacramento
  • Bethea scores over 30 for fourth consectuive game
SACRAMENTO (AP) – Just days removed from recording their biggest blowout win of the season, the Bucks hit rock bottom again in Sacramento on the other side of a rout.

Jameel Bethea scored 40 points as the Kings dismantled Milwaukee at home in a 109-64 defeat. Ironically, Sacramento was coming off a 133-96 loss in Memphis.

“It's just been that type of week for me,” said Bethea, who scored over 30 for the fourth consecutive game. “It’s always relieving to see those shots go down. Tonight was great win for us.”

BOX SCORE: Kings 109, Bucks 64

Bethea caught fire early on and tallied 25 of his 40 points in the first half alone before sitting much of the third quarter. As he rested, forward Ahmad Harmon added to the deficit, finishing with a stat-sheet stuffing performance of 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and a three blocks.

Despite the end result, the game began as a back-and-forth affair as the Kings struggled to get much going outside of Bethea’s offensive spurt.

“I think the effort just disappeared for us down the stretch,” Bucks interim coach Michael Goodrich explained. “When a player heats up like that, and you’re bringing double teams and everything, it just begins to affect the psyche of the team.”

Harmon was backed by Treshawn Parker in the scoring totals as the rookie scored 14 points for the Kings, who completed a season sweep over the Bucks after defeating them 103-99 back in November.

“It’s a good win for us as we move further into the season,” Parker said. “It gives us a lot of momentum, too, especially after dropping that one in Memphis a few nights ago.”

In an indication of Milwaukee's misery on offense, no Bucks scored more than Justin Washington’s 14 points. Their 64 points was the lowest of any team this season and their 28 turnovers was the highest.

The Bucks were 24-of-62 from the field (38.7%) while Sacramento was 42-of-70 (60.0%).

TIP-INS: Kings — Jameel Bethea has put the Kings on his back, carrying them to a 4-1 record over the past five games. A 133-96 loss in Memphis last Saturday derailed the prolific scoring run of Bethea.

TIP-INS: Bucks — The Bucks scored only nine points in the final quarter, a perfect testament to the lack of effort as the Kings ran away in the blowout.

UP NEXT

Bucks: Away against Trailblazers on Tuesday.

Heat: Home against Bulls on Wednesday.
