A Return To Form

November 22nd, 2015

Moss patiently waits at his desk, knowing a few men should arrive any moment. A knock on the door signifies that this moment is now.

"Come in! But only if it's good news!" Moss laughs.

Head athletic trainer Manny Romero and Willie Cauley-Stein enter. It's the latter who's been healing a strained Achilles for almost two weeks now.

"Well, you've entered. I sure as hell hope it's good news." Moss doesn't like their silence.

"Willie, you wanna tell him?" Romero looks up at the towering center.

Cauley-Stein responds, quiet and unassuming. "I'm all set to go."

Moss pumps his fist. "That's what I'm talking about, under the two-week timetable. Good work you two."

"Thank you sir." Romero responds, as Cauley-Stein nods his head.

"Can't wait to have you back in the starting line-up. 100% healthy?"

Romero and Cauley-Stein look at each other, turning back to Moss. "Yup." Romero says, Cauley-Stein still quiet, maybe from nervs to talking to the head man, maybe from his personality as a whole.

"Well I am glad to hear that cause we need you tomorrow against the Hornets. Now I won't waste your time any longer, get out of here and get some rest!"

The two walk out of the room as Moss goes back to his computer, opening up a file, and making some adjustments.

Hornets Cause Kings Heartbreak, Win By One

November 23rd, 2015

Well, you can't knock them for not trying. After spending all fourth quarter catching up, only to squander it in the last few minutes, the Kings didn't lie down and take it. Down eight with less than 90 seconds to go, all hope seemed lost. But then Omri Casspi, who played great off the bench, scoring 19, making five three's, drained one of them. A failed possession from Charlotte led to a fast break from Sacramento and a Rudy Gay slam. It was then three with under a minute to go. Then, in a shocking twist, Gay stole the inbounds pass. Fearful the rest of the team would pursue, he turned and faded, chucking up a bad shot, that somehow went in! It was now one. That's, unfortunately, where it would end. Two made free throws from Kemba Walker pushed it to three, and a poorly run final play led to a buzzer-beating...two from Gay. So close, yet so far.

For the bulk of the game, these two teams were evenly matched. And healthy, as this was the return of Willie Cauley-Stein. His return was disappointing however, only managing to score two points and gather five rebounds in 21 minutes played, after which he fouled out. Speaking of fouling out, Quincy Acy did it in eight. That's right, eight minutes. Don't even know how he managed, impressive really.

Those two quick departures forced the rest of the team to fill suit, with five players playing over 28 minutes, something coach Anderson has shied away from. Off the bench, as mentioned before, Casspi came to play, but Darren Collison did not, scoring just two points on 1-9 shooting. Looks like his aggressive play has vanished as quickly as it appeared. Rondo, who also had a rough shooting night, shooting 2-10, made up for it with six rebounds, 13 assists, and five steals. As expected though, both DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay led the team, the former getting 22 and 10, the latter 20 and 9.

Still though, the victor's was Charlotte, led by point guard Kemba Walker, who finished with 23 points and six assists. A handful of those going to all-star big man Al Jefferson, who finished with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. Not very impressive stats, but in a low-scoring game such as this one, where the tally was 89-88, that's all you need. Hell, starters Nicolas Batum and Marvin Williams combined to shoot just 3-16 from the field, a poor number that was avenged with the two others' strong play.

Some of those missed shots coming from beyond the arc, where the Hornets only shot 11%, 2-19. The Kings, who have a commanding lead for opponent three-point percentage, continue that reign of terror tonight, also taking top spot for fewest points allowed per game. Really, when looking at the box score it's a shock Sacramento lost. They shot 43% compared to Charlotte's 35%, and shot a decent 31% from deep. The deciding factor? A glance at free throws will immediately show you. While Sacramento shot 76%, a respectable number, it was only off 17 shots. The Hornets? They shot 80% off 40. That's a point differential of 19 just from the free throw line alone, and that folks is how you win and lose a game.

A Cautious Injury

November 23rd, 2015

It was early in the fourth that Cousins was taken out precariously, despite the Kings still very much being in contention for the W. To those not in the know, the Hornets ended up winning the game by one tonight, something that likely wouldn't have happened had Cousins been there.

After being taken off, with cameras pointed at him, Cousins and head trainer Manny Romero moved to the locker room, seeking privacy. The game has been over for hours now and we still don't know what happened to DeMarcus. Well, that was before the Sacramento Bee got the inside scoop.

Word from an inside source says that he suffered a bruised hip. Not typically a serious injury, this one clearly sidelined him for the rest of the game so we have to worry, will he miss extra time as well?

Whatever the outcome, with that injury confidently said to us, we feel it won't be serious, and if Cousins misses games it won't be for long. In fact, we may be overblowing this and he may not miss any games at all, just likely see a reduction in minutes. If he's day-to-day or anything more serious the Kings are forced to report it, so keep your eyes peeled to the Bee for your latest updates. If we hear nothing, well, that's exactly what we want.

Bucks Hand Kings Decisive Loss, Winning 109-98

November 25th, 2015

Welp, this marks Sacramento's first losing streak of the season. 16 games in, that's quite an impressive feat for a team expected to do nothing of the sort. Today's loss was a tough pill to swallow, not only because it was against a beatable team in the Bucks, who haven't started off the season too well, but also because they allowed Milwaukee to essentially win in the third, when they outplayed the Kings in all aspects.

Not even a 46% shooting night from deep for the Kings could help them evade another L. Because while everyone contributed in that regard, even DeMarcus Cousins who shot 3-5 from beyond the arc, the Bucks were unstoppable inside. A 3-11 night from three, good for 27%, didn't stop them from finishing off the game with an impressive 52% field goal percentage. This was brought on by two big man, one literally, the other a (greek) freak of nature. Both Giannas Antetokounmpo and Greg Monroe finished off the night with 26 points and 11 rebounds each. Throw Jabari Parker in the mix, who had 17 and 9, and you have three players scoring a combined 69 points, zero of which came from deep.

This is the first time Sacramento's defense has failed in such obvious fashion. Now, it wasn't from long range, but typically Cousins, and now Cauley-Stein with his return, have held down the fort in the post. Tonight's game showed they are vulnerable. Cousins ended up leading the team in points 18, despite getting fouled out after 24 minutes of play time. Both Rajon Rondo and Darren Collison were able to take advantage of poor opposing guard defensive, scoring 25 points between the two, with Collison even dishing out nine assists to Rondo's five.

So while the Kings' last loss against the Hornets was decided because of an abundance of converted free throws, with Charlotte themselves shooting terribly, this one was decided because Milwaukee was quite literally the opposite of that, scorching the Kings when it came time for the second half, one in which they outscored Sacramento by 17. A tough loss for Sactown, but a hopeful comeback and rebound is in store for Friday night when they battle the Timberwolves. If they don't win that won there's little chance they prevent the losing streak from reaching four, as they face the Warriors the very next night.

Kings Dismantle Timberwolves, Win By 19

November 27th, 2015

Back at home after a five-game road trip has never felt so good, and for the Kings you could sense that on the court. The fans were back on their side, the purple shone throughout the arena matched their colors, everything felt good. And with that leverage, a win against Minnesota, and new head coach and former Kings coach George Karl, was a sweet, sweet victory. You could see it on his face, and truth be told there may have been some sneering side glances between Brickashaw Moss and George Karl, one smiling through the game a bit more than the other.

111-92 was the final score, as a strong second quarter from the Kings put them up five going into the half, where they never looked back. And I hate to sound redundant but with these guys the games seem to be won and lost beyond the arc. Minnesota, maybe by Karl's doing, only took five three's all game, resorting to a more aggressive playstyle where Andrew Wiggins drove and Karl-Anthony Towns posted up. A third of their points came from in the paint, another third from the free throw line. The Kings however, at least from deep, were unstoppable, shooting 11-19, shooting enough for 58%.

Easily the most shocking of which was Rajon Rondo, who made all four of his three-point attempts. Hopefully Karl wasn't going off his previous experiences with Rondo, cause let it be known, his numbers from beyond the arc this season are better than they have ever been in his career. More expected, but still impressive, Omri Casspi came off the bench to land every three he took, while his partner Darren Collison didn't make one, but managed to tally up a solid 16 and 7 line. Rudy Gay, who's now turning into Mr. Consistency, put down 26 points off 10-19 shooting.

That was needed, after yet another game where at least one big fouls out. This time it was two, both starters, Cousins after 30 minutes, finishing with 15 and 11, Cauley-Stein after just 16, finishing with 1 and 1. Changes may need to take place trying to keep the opponent out of the paint and restrict their free throw attempts cause it seems to be getting out of hand. At least this time the Kings were able to compete at the line, missing just three of their 23 attempts. Solid numbers all around leads to a complete game going into Golden State tomorrow.

Ha ha, Karl wasn't able to get his revenge after all. Brickshaw must have been loving the show put on by his team as they dismantled the Wolves.

Damnit! How could I have forgotten such a juicy storyline already? Even though it's only been a few months, Karl's already a distant past in my memory. We'll be playing the Wolves somewhat soon, hopefully we can keep up the victories against them!

Warriors Embarrass Kings By 47

November 28th, 2015

The header should say it all. Today, after traveling to Oakland and playing on a back-to-back, the Kings showed everyone why they still might be just the Kings, as the Warriors showed everywhere they're most certainly the Warriors. 138-91, the number is almost too shocking to comprehend. It's one thing to lose to the NBA champs, that's expected, it's another to lose like this. An absolutely pathetic performance from start to finish, one Sacramento should feel ashamed about. After the first it was seven, after the second 27, after the third 39, after the game 47. Just wow.

How'd they lose so badly? Well, if you've been following the Kings this year you already know why. They are, after all, the best team when it comes to defending and limiting the three ball. So, what happens when the best team in the league at stopping the three goes up against the best team of all-time taking them? The second one wins, and wins badly. Making 15 three's, shooting an incredibly 64%, Sacramento had no chance. More than that, they shot 58% total and 77% from the line, a number that looks much less impressive when not paired with the fact that they took 43, making 33. Everything that could've gone wrong did.

12 of the 15 three's came between the Splash Brothers, Steph finishing with 33, Klay 32. It was Draymond Green however, that hit them from all directions, getting 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists. Even Andrew Bogut, who got a solid 18 and 9, didn't miss a single shot of the seven he took. Golden State beat the Kings in every major statistical category as well, only 'losing' to them when the Kings decided to give up 20 turnovers to the Warriors' 7.

Offensively everybody on Sacramento struggled besides one person, and it's not someone you'd expect. Being pre-occupied draining three's meant Klay Thompson couldn't guard Marco Belinelli, who ended the game with 30 points off 10-21 shooting, including 5-12. Sounds like he was playing for the wrong team. No one else got above 13. That number attributed to Rondo, who also had 11 assists. Rudy Gay only managed 11, while Cauley-Stein had his welcome back to being relevant party destroyed when he got a double-double, 10 and 10.

The problem of fouls still shows, this time worse than ever before. Three, yes three, Kings fouled out; Kosta Koufos and Quincy Acy both in 17 minutes, and Darren Collison in 26. Even DeMarcus Cousins, who struggled the entire time, was one foul shy of doing so. Honestly, they wouldn't have even missed him, with his eight points and seven rebounds showing as his worst game of the year. It was clearly his, and clearly the Kings'. We'll see if they can turn it around, if they can't then they have a load of worry in store.
