San Antonio Spurs Off-Season Recap

The San Antonio Spurs begin a new era starting the 2016-17 season without big man, Tim Duncan, for the first time since 1997.

Tim Duncan retired in July after a Hall of Fame worthy career. Duncan was drafted 1st overall by the Spurs back in the 1997 Draft. He played 19 seasons, all with the Spurs. In his 19 year career, he won 5 championships, 3 finals MVP awards, 2 MVP awards, was a 15 time All-Star, and an Olympion. Not to mention the numerous All-NBA Teams and All-Defensive Team honors. Duncan scored 26,496 points and logged 15,091 rebounds to average a career double-double.

Offseason Additions: The Spurs went out and signed 36 year old big man, Pau Gasol to a 2 year, $30 million deal. Gasol will definitely help the Spurs transition as they begin play without Tim Duncan. Gasol is 6 time all-star and coming off two straight all-star appearances as a member of the Chicago Bulls. In addition to Gasol, they also went out and signed two other big men in Free Agency. Those two big men are 27 year old Center Dewayne Dedmon and 33 year old Power Forward David Lee. Both were signed for depth in the Front court. Then, the Spurs brought over two players who they owned draft rights to. PF Davis Bertans was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers but had his draft rights traded to the Spurs shortly after. Due to a very solid preseason, Bertans has made the Spurs final roster. Then, the Spurs brought over SF Livio Jean-Charles. Jean-Charles was the Spurs 1st Round Pick back in the 2013 NBA Draft. The only other move the Spurs made this offseason was drafting 20 year old, PG Dejounte Murray out of Washington with the 29th Pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. In his only season at Washington, Murray averaged 16.1 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.4 APG, and 1.8 SPG.

Offseason Losses: Besides Tim Duncan retiring, the Spurs lost 3 notable players from last years squad that won 67 games. PF David West, who shocked everyone last year as he passed up on millions to sign a Veteran's minimum with the Spurs, bolted after one year to sign a Veteran's Minimum with the Golden State Warriors. Then, massive 7'4" Center Boban Marjanovic signed a 3 year, $21 million deal with the Detroit Pistons. And finally, the Spurs traded PF Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz in exchange for draft rights to 2nd Round Pick, Olivier Hanlen. The Diaw trade was strictly to clear some cap space.

Danny Green joined the Spurs at the end of the 2010-11 season. He signed a 4 year, $45 million contract extension in the 2015 offseason after a career year. However, in 2015-16 he had his worst year since 2010-11 and he wasn't improving much so far this season. This trade makes sense from a standpoint of the Spurs trying to get younger players to develop and also trying to clear cap space... Which was the reason Boris Diaw was traded in the offseason.

Josh Richardson was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2015 NBA Draft out of the University of Tennessee. Richardson came into his own at the end of his rookie season and was featured on ESPN numerous times for posterizing dunks. This season, like Green, Richardson's play has slipped from a year ago.
