Spurs Deal Green, Gasol to Make Splash in Free Agency

Spurs Trade Danny Green, 2018 1st Round (Top 5 Protected)
Nets Trade Spencer Dinwiddie

The Spurs dealt longtime Spur Danny Green, and next year's first rounder, to bring in Spencer Dinwiddie, but it isn't the former Colorado point guard that the Spurs are interested in. They're looking to clear cap space to make a huge splash in free agency, perhaps to sign a Chris Paul or Kyle Lowry, and this move clears them roughly $9.00M.

Brooklyn gets another 1st round pick by taking on a contract, and Green is overall a pretty decent player still. Smart move on their part to stockpile more picks by essentially giving up nothing.

Spurs Trade: Pau Gasol
Spurs Receive: Kevin Seraphin

Grizzlies Trade: Chandler Parsons, 2019 2nd Round Pick (Nets)
Grizzlies Receive: Pau Gasol

Kings Trade: Langston Galloway
Kings Receive: Chandler Parsons, 2019 2nd Round Pick (Nets)

Pacers Trade: Kevin Seraphin
Pacers Receive: Langston Galloway

In a 4-team trade, San Antonio unloaded Pau Gasol and his contract onto Memphis, who were able to find a partner to get rid of Chandler Parsons in return. With Pau joining his younger brother in Memphis, I'm sure we'll see some pretty cool moments next season of the Gasol Brothers in Grizzlies uniforms.

Sacramento takes on Parsons' contract, and it's a low-risk, high-reward pick-up for the Kings, as Parsons is still a talented, but oft-injured player. With them not being too competitive in the near-future, his hefty contract shouldn't hurt them.

Hayward Returns to Utah, 5yr/$154M

Jazz fans can finally exhale, as their franchise player and All-Star Gordon Hayward is returning to the Utah Jazz. He comes at a damn hefty price - 5 years, $154 million, but he's worth every penny. After showcasing his talent all throughout last year and in the postseason, the Jazz knew that they needed to lock him up.

It wasn't easy; Boston and Indiana both offered him max deals, hoping to convince him to leave Salt Lake City. But Hayward eventually decided to stay, as he, Rudy Gobert, and now Eric Bledsoe hope to build a championship team together. The Jazz can still add another main piece before re-signing Joe Ingles, who is another coveted free agent receiving offers from many teams in the league. With George Hill gone, the Jazz have a little bit of spending money.

Kyle Lowry Joins Denver Nuggets - 4yr/$132.37M

Nobody can really say that they saw this one coming. The Denver Nuggets won the Kyle Lowry sweepstakes, as they were able to pry him away from the DeMar DeRozan and the Toronto Raptors. Lowry, 31, had spent the last 5 seasons in Toronto, where he blossomed into an All-Star and one of the top point guards in the league. The appeal of playing with a young team like Denver, who has a young star big man in Nikola Jokic, proved to be too much for Lowry to resist. He also gets to get away from that LeBron guy, too.

While I'm sure it will sting for awhile for Lowry, he'll surely love those give-and-go passes that Jokic presents. Combine that with Gary Harris, Jamal Murray, rookies O.G. Anunoby and D.J. Wilson, and a newly re-signed Danilo Gallinari, and the Nuggets are a darkhorse to make the playoffs in the West.

Clippers Break Bank to Retain Paul, Griffin

In two monstrous deals, the Clippers duo of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin opted to re-sign with Los Angeles, despite rumors that the two were leaving. Griffin was re-signed first to a 5 year, $154M contract, and Paul soon followed with a huge 5 year, $179.67M deal. After getting ousted in the first round by the Utah Jazz last season, many expected Griffin and Paul to be gone; Griffin to Boston, OKC, or Houston, and Paul to San Antonio.

But in the end, money proved to be the deciding factor, and the Clippers could offer far more than what anyone else could offer.

Spurs Strike Out On Lowry & Paul, But Land Hill

Though getting Chris Paul may have been a pipe dream, one just has to imagine how much damage CP3 would have done with Kawhi Leonard and Greg Popovich coaching him. Instead, the Spurs have to settle with a very damn good point guard in George Hill. Hill's game isn't very flashy; he's efficient, a defensive stalwart, and he knocks down open shots. He's the perfect point guard for the Spurs system, and having already played in San Antonio, it shouldn't take him too long to get comfortable as a Spur once again. Hill's contract is a 3 year deal for $79.94M, with the 3rd year being a team option.

Sixers Sign Paul Millsap

Philly made a surprising acquisition by signing veteran All-Star forward Paul Millsap. Millsap, who developed into a perennial All-Star in Atlanta, signed with the Sixers on a 2 year, $62.27M contract, with the 2nd year being a player option. Though Philly already has a glut of big men, featuring Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, Richaun Holmes, Jahlil Okafor, and Tiago Splitter, there's surely plenty of room for Millsap, especially if the rumors of Ben Simmons playing point guard are true.

Fascinating moves in free agency. Lowry to the Nuggets was out of left field, but maybe he's at the start of a great team -- Jokic certainly is for real.

Not surprised to see the Clippers retain Griffin and CP3, it was either do that or rebuild.

Spurs made many moves and came away with George Hill -- they traded a future 1st for cap space, a very unSpur-sian like move but Hill is a solid consolation prize. Surprised Aldridge stayed, thought he was trade bait for sure.

Good to see Millsap on the Sixers -- it's weird, but he's a stretch four they desperately need. They still need to unload Okafor I think, but with Millsap holding down the starting spot at the four and Saric coming off the bench, that's really going to help them in both the short and long term.

Hayward back to Utah! Good for him, it was really the only place to go after Boston grabbed Butler and the Pacers kept PG13. Looking forward to seeing what the Jazz do with the cap space they have left.

Yeah, the West got richer with the addition of Lowry to Denver. With Minnesota rounding out their starting 5 with Favors at the 4 and Denver adding Lowry and keeping Gallinari, that's two young teams that are really threatening for the playoffs now.

I like Millsap to Philly, especially since it's essentially just a 2-year deal. He shouldn't prevent them from re-signing any of their young guys. They'll be a bit crowded at the 4 and 5, but they've got spacing, as Millsap, Saric, and Embiid can all shoot the three.

Hill to San Antonio was purely done because the Spurs couldn't get CP3 or Lowry, but I feel like they dodged a bullet by not maxing out a point guard in his 30s. Hill is just on a 3 year deal, and I think the 3rd year is even a team option.

I was worried Hayward might leave for Boston or Indiana. I had them both give him a max offer, along with Utah, to just see who he signs with, and ultimately that he re-signed. That would have been a nasty lineup in Boston, though.
