Re: Severe Weather l Oklahoma City Thunder (2K18/MyLeague/Ps4)
2017-18 TEAM PREVIEW
2016-17 Finish: 47-35 l 6th seed l L, 1st Round to Houston (4-1)
Key Losses: C Enes Kanter l C Domantas Sabonis l F Doug McDermott l F Taj Gibson l G Victor Oladipo
Key Additions: F Paul George l F Carmelo Anthony l F Patrick Patterson l G Raymond Felton
2017 Draft: F Terrence Ferguson (21st overall)
In their first season without Kevin Durant since the 2nd overall pick in 2007 joined the then-Seattle Sonics, it was apparent to everyone that Oklahoma City was Russell Westbrook's rodeo. 42 triple-double performances and a MVP willed the Thunder to 47 wins and the playoffs, but a first round exit in five games to Houston displayed the perfect summary of the season: the Thunder are great when Westbrook plays, abysmal when he doesn't.
Westbrook had solid contributors in guys like Victor Oladipo and Enes Kanter, but it wasn't enough to change the reality that Westbrook drove the offense and couldn't take a night off. So it's with much credit due to General Manager Sam Presti that the Thunder focused on finding Westbrook help, and they struck proverbial gold in the off-season.
Oklahoma City added four-time All Star Paul George and 10-time All Star Carmelo Anthony, players who both average 20+ points per game over their careers and would be the #1 scoring option on most teams. Now they'll be asked to alleviate pressure from Westbrook, take over when need be, and help Oklahoma City return to the top of the Western Conference.
Oklahoma City has made it clear that they will continue to try to challenge the likes of Golden State and Cleveland for NBA supremacy, trading for both George and Anthony to form their own "super team", a media buzz-word that gets labeled far too often. Despite the hype, Oklahoma City still faces many questions: Can the ball-dominant stars of Anthony, George, and Westbrook co-exist? Can the supporting cast keep the Thunder in close games? Who's taking the last shot? Only the upcoming season will be able to answer those questions, and the combined salaries of their three All-Stars will reach roughly $85 million next season, so a lot of moves will have to be made to retain a solid supporting cast.
Strength: Scoring. Oklahoma City finished 11th in the NBA last season at 106.6 points a night and 16th in offensive rating. Those numbers can only be expected to rise with the additions of George and Anthony, giving Oklahoma City three players who can score whenever they want.
Weakness: Window of Opportunity. George can decline his player option and Anthony can exercise his early termination option at the end of the season. It's clear this team was assembled to try to win now, and should both players leave without a championship it may feel all for naught. Even if both players still in Oklahoma, Anthony's age (currently 33) doesn't lessen the need to win sooner rather than later.
Prediction: 50-32 l 4th seed l 2nd round exit
