Clippers get revenge by snapping Celtics' 9-game winning streak
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- When these teams met last Wednesday night in Boston, the
Los Angeles Clippers suffered an embarrassing 96-60 loss to the
Boston Celtics. It was the Celtics eighth win in a row. The Celtics looked unstoppable at that point, having won this game and their last one against the
Utah Jazz by an average of 34 points. Coming into this game, the Clippers were on a role as well. They had won three straight games, including an emphatic 120-98 win against the
Dallas Mavericks in Dallas. That was the team that the Celtics faced in the Staples Center on Monday night.
Los Angeles Clippers' center DeAndre Jordan recorded his seventh double-double of the year with 20 points and 17 rebounds.
The Clippers made a slight tweak to the starting lineup with Wesley Johnson taking over for
Sam Dekker at the small forward position. As a whole, the team did well in the game, but Johnson was a big part of the reason the Clippers got the win. Johnson finished with 21 points and made 6 of his 10 three-point attempts.
DeAndre Jordon also had a big night as he had 20 poins and 17 rebounds. Entering the game, Jordan led the NBA with 14.6 rebounds a game.
Milos Teodosic passes to Welsey Johnson for a corner three in the fourth quarter.
Both Jordan and
Al Jefferson helped tilt the rebounds in favor of the Clippers, 55-43. Jefferson's 14 rebounds were second on the team. Montrezl Harrell, who performed much better in this game, had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Celtics'
Al Horford finished with a team-high 13 rebounds and had 13 points.
Gordon Hayward had 14 points and six rebounds while Jaylen Brown had 11 points and six rebounds.
Scoring wasn't a problem for the Celtics starters as everyone except for
Marcus Morris, who had four points, finished in double figures.
Jayson Tatum played well like has been this season, finishing the game with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals. The rest of the bench was missing on the offensive end. None of the other players had more than five points and were a combined 5 of 14 from the field for 14 points. While the Clippers bench only outscored the Celtics bench by one, their bench was more efficient.
Sindarius Thornwell, another player to do significantly better than he had in the previous game between these two teams, was 4 for 8 from the field with 10 points.
Kyrie Irving had a game-high 33 points and nine assists.
After ending the first quarter down 27-23, the Clippers went on a 14-4 run in the second. Even though
Kyrie Irving's free throw helped end Boston's scoring slump, the Clippers were able to come out on top in the quarter. The Clippers never trailed by more than three points the rest of the game. Some clutch free throw shooting by
Patrick Beverley and
Louis Williams helped hold off the Celtics in the fourth quarter. Tatum and Irving hit back-to-back three-pointers between the Clippers' trips to the free throw line to make it a one possession game, but ultimately came up short when Irving's desperation three-point shot bounced off the rim in the final seconds. That brought the game to a close, 108-105 in favor of the Clippers.
Second-year forward Semi Ojeleye gets some playing time in the second quarter after Jayson Tatum picks up two quick fouls.
Monday's loss is a small setback in what has been a fantastic start to the season for the Celtics. The Celtics still have three more road games including some tough games against the
Portland Trail Blazers and
Oklahoma City Thunder. The Celtics will have to refocus after this difficult loss and figure out what to do with the rotation now that Morris may miss some time with an ankle injury. More details on the injury later.
