NCAA TOURNAMENT BRACKET - Final Four

#2 Louisville 68 vs #8 Clemson 65

#5 Washington State 73 vs #8 Arizona State 75

Final Four Analysis - Clemson doesn't go down until the bitter end, but Louisville holds on to the win. SG Chris Smith led the Cardinals in scoring with 21 points, while PG Peyton Siva tallied 14 points and dished out 5 assists. It was Louisville first close call of the tournament, and they managed to emerge victorious.

Arizona State's defense earned them yet another victory. They forced the Cougars into shooting 18-53 from the field; the only reason Washington State was in the game was because of they got the Sun Devils in foul trouble. They hit 31 of 44 free throws, but it wasn't enough to get by Arizona State.

National Championship

#2 Louisville 86
vs #8 Arizona State 70

National Championship Analysis: The Cardinals deadly and efficient offense was simply too much for Arizona State to overcome as Louisville wins the National Championship! Peyton Siva (12 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts), Chris Smith (18 pts, 5 rebs), Terrance Jennings (16 pts, 6 rebs) and company would not be denied as they went into the half with a 14 point lead and never looked back. They did something no other team could do in this tournament against Arizona State: they shot over 50% from the floor (29-53, 9-18 from 3).

In a battle of contrasting styles, the Louisville Cardinals emerge as the 2009 National Champions!

Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

TEXAS SOUTHERN RECRUITING UPDATE

Martinez Finalizes Recruiting Class

Coach Logan Martinez put all 5 available scholarships to good use this season.

The Tigers inked 4 recruits, and will bring in a transfer from a Power 5 program.

The headliner in this year's class is hometown kid SF Seamus Burns. Burns is an athletic 6'7'' wing with a good jumper. He is a fringe Top-100 prospect, checking in at No. 101 in ESPN's recruiting rankings. Burns will start from Day 1 for the Tigers at the Small Forward position.

Texas Southern has also inked three other 3-star prospects.

The Tigers landed their power forward of the future this year when Karim Freeman, a 6'9'' 235 big man from Mission Veijo, California announced his pledge to Martinez's program. Freeman could be a diamond in the rough for Texas Southern -- he does everything well, but still needs to working on finishing in the paint. Freeman is ranked #238 according to ESPN.com and is the #15 Center prospect.

Martinez's first recruiting class featured a 7-foot center in Laurence Garza and he followed that up with another 7-foot signee in C Stanley Melvin. Melvin also has more long-term upside than Garza, though isn't quite as good defensively. He will be the first big off the bench next year.

PG Chauncey Trammell will come in and be the backup point guard to Austen Mitchell, but he has a higher ceiling than the Tigers' current point guard and could take over starting responsibilities down the line. He shoots the 3-ball well for an incoming freshman, but needs to continue working on his form to get his shot off faster.

The fifth and final available scholarship will go to transfer PG Raymond Penn. The Sugar Land, Texas native wanted to be closer to home for his final year of eligibility after starting his career at Oklahoma State.

The 5'9'' 161-pound point guard averaged 6.4 points and 2.6 assists per game his sophomore year in Stillwater, but saw his minutes greatly diminished as a junior (from 26.7 to 6.5). In his limited playing time, Penn shot 47 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range (18-33).

Penn, who is 72 overall, will sit out next season. He will join a solid point guard stable in two years when Mitchell is a junior and Trammel is a sophomore. It will be interesting to see how that battle in the backcourt for playing time pans out.

Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

Offseason Recap

Mid-Major shakeup
Three of the most notable mid-major coaches in the county will patrol the sidelines for different teams next year as Mark Few, Shaka Smart and Greg Marshall left their respective programs.

Few is out in Spokane and he will now coach the UConn Huskies. Marshall will take over DePaul, and Smart is the new head man at Boston College.

There was some speculation as to what Texas Southern head coach Logan Martinez would do, but after interviews with a couple of programs, including reportedly Gonzaga and VCU, he will remain in Houston to lead the Tigers.

Duke, UNC bring in monster recruiting classes

The nation's best rivalry will see some stud freshman take the court on both sides as the Tar Heels and Blue Devils dominated the recruiting landscape.

Duke landed five Top 50 recuits and the sixth was ranked No. 51. Three of their prospects are in the top five, including No. 1 recruit and sure-fire One-and-done PF Sammy Burton (84 overall) Projected lottery picks SG Emmett (82) Bosley and SG T.R. Merritt (82) join a ridiculously talented roster that still has talented holdovers in PG Seth Curry and PF Ryan Kelly.

UNC didn't land quite the quality of players as the Blue Devils but they made up for it in quantity. The Tar Heels' top prospects is the No.4 recruit, frosh PF Andre Boyden (81), a projected lottery pick. UNC also landed the nation's No. 13, No. 22, No. 28, No. 37, No. 93 and No. 151 recruits to add to a team that still features PG Kendall Marshall and SG Dexter Strickland.
