The gut wrenching saga of Emmett14 (FBCB2010)

*I am not liable for how wrenched your guts get while reading this.

With all of the amazing video games in the world, I've easily played this one the most. Fast Break College Basketball 2010. A text sim. I would not want to see how many hours I've wasted staring at the bland screens of this game.

So, what's a few more hundred hours. Here goes.

It's May, 1968 and 28 year old Emmett14 has spent the last 4 seasons as an assistant for a very successful Notre Dame program, with 4 NCAA tournament appearances in his 4 years capped off by a national championship in 1965-66.

Hampton, Virginia is where he'll begin, to coach the Hampton Pirates of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Pirates are coming off a very strong 24-10 (11-5) season. After winning the play-in game in the NIT, they lost in the 1st round to Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, most of that talent is graduating.

The guys in blue are graduating. It doesn't leave us much. We'll get into the roster and the staff I have to hire soon, but first a bit about the universe this is taking place in.

It started in 1900, starting with the circa 2010 alignment and a handful of changes over the years. There have been a lot of smaller colleges added, all real D2 schools that have been created and spread around the league. A lot are unaffiliated with a conference and Independent. There are too many to mention, so as we come across them we'll learn about the new additions.

Given that we're nearly 70 years from the genesis of this league, there is zero resemblance to any real life prestige, as far as Kentucky, Duke and Kansas being perennial powers in real life means nothing in this.

That being said, here are the current powers in college basketball:

In the major conferences:

East Carolina has joined the ACC.

Illinois State is in the Big 10 and a very good college basketball program.

The PAC 10 is the PAC 11 and has the 10 from the 90's and 00's and has added UNLV. A 12th team is likely to be added in the next few season.

Memphis and Louisiana Tech are in the SEC and both are strong programs.

There are a couple of new conference in the NCAA that debuted in 1958-1959, the Frontier Conference. There are 9 teams and they currently play just 8 conference games. They do not receive an automatic bid but will sometime down the line as they accumulate a few more teams.

Again, there are a lot of minor changes that would take too long to go back and delineate. So, I won't. But, what I will do is talk about my Hampton Pirates the next post.

The coaching staff

Basically, what I did to pick my team was find a coach my age (28) who organically took a new job and had never been a head coach. There was a guy my age, level 6 (out of 15) who took the Hampton job, I rearranged his ratings to my liking, keeping the number of points, and changed his name to Emmett14.

That is not my real hometown or high school, but the one the computer generated coach had, whose name has been lost forever as soon as I replaced it with my message board name, oops.

I have no alma mater, and will be looking to advance in ways that are natural and help my career. But, before I can even think about getting out of Hampton, Virginia, I need to hire a coaching staff.

We offer a ton of guys the minimum salary, $30,000 dollars, and they all decline. The one guy we bumped up our offer up a bit for was 32 year old Gerald Chamberlain. He's a really strong defensive coach and this will be the SE Missouri State grad's first coaching job.

Blue games are conference games.

The red game is the first game of the Lon Varnell (???) classic. It's a 3 day tournament, like all tournaments in this universe and every team is guaranteed 3 games. We're the 6 seed.

The lone returning starter from last year's team. Gordon is an excellent catch and shoot three point shooter who doesn't do much else. He'll start and play 30 minutes at the 2 this season.

Former St. Joes walk-on (a common theme to this team). Started 5 games last year and then got hurt. Only healed up during the summer. I think he stinks. He does rebound pretty well and will get some steals, but his offensive game is bunk and his on-ball defense is worse.

A former walk on at Northern Colorado. He's just awful and a waste of a scholarship.

Peter Albert, 6'6', 203, Sophomore, Tiger, Georgia, 1*, #1212

Walk-on at the College of Charleston. Has never played. Horror show defensively, but gets on the glass some and has enough offensive game to contribute a bit. But his defense makes him unplayable.

Finally someone else with a little promise. Gentile is an undersized shooting guard with legit offensive talent. Had solid scoring rates last year, and had a good off season as well. Will see a lot of playing time, and will need to score points consistently for this team.

Walk-on who saw a little time. Can handle the ball and knock down a three. Bad defender.

Jan Bratcher, 6'5", 204, Freshman, Hedgesville, West Virginia, 2*, #629

Has some real offensive talent. Shoots the ball well and can get to the rim. Doesn't rebound or defend, but still has a little room to grow their at least. Surely will see some playing time at the wing, since he can score the ball.

John Stansbury, 6'0", 186, Freshman, Hartsville, Tennessee, 1*, #1018

Steady ball handler that will hit an open three. Not much of a defender, and really just a lackluster player all around. But, due to the lack of point guard options he might see a decent amount of playing time.

Another former walk-on, but at least this time I recruited him. Played a total of 4 minutes at UCONN, and since he's a senior who will free up the scholarship next year anyway I took him (and Brown). Bowie is competent across the board. Holds his own defensively, will help on the glass and actually has a bit of a three point shot. Will try to find a spot in the rotation.

Another senior walk on I recruited. All of the stats above are from his days at Southern Mississippi. So he's actually played a fair amount. Has a bit of an offensive game inside and out and will get on the defensive glass some. He's a a very bad defender, though.

Former walk-on at Yale. Ovalle can rebound at an elite level and knock down a three every other game. But he's useless otherwise. His rebounding is strong enough to maybe fight for some playing time.

Played a bit last year as a freshman. Solid defensive big who will snare a few boards. His offensive game isn't much, but at least it isn't a liability. Was 4-8 from three, but has poor ratings, which worries me that he might like to shoot it.

Charles Ceja, 6'8", 246, Redshirt Freshman, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 2*, #828

Excellent defensive potential, though he's a bit raw. Same goes for his offensive game, a work in progress. Doesn't do much on the glass, but if he did he'd be at a mid-major and not here. Needs to develop, but when he does he'll be solid. He'll get some playing time just for the experience.

Zachary Fowler, 6'8", 258, Freshman, Ilion, New York, 1*, #1131

Not as promising as Ceja. He does do a good job scoring the ball and gets on the offensive glass, which I like. But his defense is sorry.

Recruiting Class of 1969 update

I've played this game a ton and been in control of programs from the lowest of the low to 100 prestige schools and I don't think I've ever been as fortunate to start off so strong at a low level institution. I have 4 scholarships to give and before the first tip-off of my career, I've already filled 3 of them, and I'm happy with all 3. I also am the favorite for what would be the cherry on top of a great class. But, I won't jump the gun. Here's the 3 I have so far, from lowest ranked to highest.

Georgetown and St. John's didn't offer him, so don't get too excited. My scout thinks he's going to be a fantastic defender and rebounder, which sounds perfect for what I want to do. Defend and maximize possessions. Offensively, he looks versatile and competent. Should step right into playing time next year as a junior.

Another promising looking defensive player. Passes well, though can't play point, rebounds and can score at least a little. We need a lot of help on the perimeter, so anyone we sign is likely to step right into 15+ minutes and Smith certainly will.

As of right now, the star of the class. Roop is a good athlete for his size and he loves to score and rebound. His defense doesn't look like much, but in a low level conference like the MEAC, if Roop reaches his potential, he's going to cause a lot of problems for opposing front lines.

1968-1969 Game 1

November 16th, 1968 versus the Hartford Hawks (0-0)
Location: West Hartford, CT
Conference: American East
1967-1968 record: 16-16 (10-8)
Postseason: None

Hartford is a 15 prestige school that has 10 NCAA appearances to their name, though none since the 1942-43 season. The 10 wins (out of 18) in conference play last year was just the 3rd double digit conference win total since 1947.

PG: Green, 6'3", Junior: Started last year. Solid point guard with a nice three point shot. Averaged 8.7 points and 3 assists last season. Poor defender.

SG: Godin, 6'2", Sophomore: Started last year. Volume shooter who averaged 15 a game as a freshman, but on 38% shooting. Did make 90 three pointers last year on that same 38%. Doesn't contribute much outside of offense.

SF: Gillies, 6'9", Senior: Played 9 minutes a game last year. Giant wing that is a strong defender and doesn't add much else despite his size.

PF: Schuck, 6'11", Senior: Played 14.5 minutes a game last year and averaged 5 and 4. Average across the board. 15-35 from beyond the arc last season.

C: White, 6'10", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 10.5 and 8 last season. Gets on the glass and is a competent defender. Does enough inside to keep teams honest. Will get a few points off putbacks a game.

Bench: Jones is a 5'10" backup point guard who will get some steals and is aggressive with the ball. Nock is a 6'6" 3 and D reserve wing that was 23-55 from three last season, he's just a sophomore and can really defend. Oubre is a 6'8" sophomore post who looks like he'll get most of the minutes off the bench in the paint. He's got skill and should be a solid big man in his league in a few years. Nobody else looks like they'll play much.

Coach: Pat King, 60 years old. 182-229 career record. 11th season at Hartford.

Excellent offensive coach and good scout that has just sort of tread water his whole career with Hartford, never falling into oblivion, but rarely getting above .500 in conference.

Godin is the main threat, and we could be anemic enough offensively that a 25 point game from him could beat us. Would be nice to get the gut-wrenching off on the right foot.
