          2018-19 Season Preview

          New Year, New League

For the second time in a row, and for the the third time in four seasons, the Golden State Warriors walked away in June with an NBA Championship. But is this going to be a continuing reign of dominance or a few years of greatness?

One determining factor in answering that question will surely be the impact of the league's biggest free agent and most polarizing figure, LeBron James. LeBron led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first-ever championship three years ago, the only team to take down Stephen Curry and the Warriors during their four year run.

This season, LeBron will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, which adds another threat to an already deep Western Conference. On top of the Warriors, the Houston Rockets were already running high with megastar James Harden, the Oklahoma City Thunder are led by triple-double-averaging Russell Westbrook, and don't forget about lower-finishing teams with superstars a la Anthony Davis' Pelicans and Damien Lillard's Blazers. The West is going to be a deep conference this year, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

The East has some intrigue, too, but not quite as much as the West. On top of the Atlantic division for the last several seasons have been Boston and Toronto, but the 76ers came on strong last year. Other than those three, it is difficult to see anyone making a run at the top of the East, especially with LeBron's departure from Cleveland.

The Rookie of the Year race should be wide open this year, as after controversy over the award a season ago there are several candidates coming into the league that could make an impact right away. The unknown of the bunch is Luka Doncic, the Atlanta Hawks' pick at #3 who will be playing in Dallas this year after being traded for fellow rookie Trae Young. Doncic played in Europe prior to this season, so many American viewers have not seen him as much as they've seen college sensations such as Marvin Bagley, Deandre Ayton, Young, and Wendell Carter. The young crop that entered the league this season is going to be exciting to watch for a long time.

The first NBA.com power rankings of the season have been released, and unsurprisingly, Golden State is at the top. What may come as a surprise to some is that the Spurs are at #2 despite losing Manu Ginobili to retirement and Tony Parker.

            Brooklyn Nets Preview

Nets entering a mixed bag season

It's been a long decade for Nets fans.

For several years around 2010, the Nets were bad. Real bad. In 2009-2010, the Nets became the fifth team in NBA history to lose 70 games in a season. Two years later, the team left New Jersey and landed in Brooklyn. There were three playoff appearances from 2013-2015, mostly behind aging star power in Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Gerald Wallace. However, Brooklyn compromised much of its future, giving up several first-round picks and never making it past the second round of the playoffs. The next season, the Nets would have the worst record in the league, and they would have two more losing seasons afterward.

Now, Brooklyn finds itself without true veteran talent, but in a position looking up. Beyond all of the traded picks, the Nets are in possession of two first-round picks in the coming draft. The Nets are over the salary cap, but almost every contract comes off the books after this season, including the albatross Dwight Howard contract that the Nets are paying despite waiving Howard.

As for the team itself, there is not much to be expected this season. DeAngelo Russell comes in looking like the best player on the team, but even he leaves a lot to be desired. Brooklyn's best asset currently is youth. The best players on the team are also some of the youngest, including Russell(22), Spencer Dinwiddie(25), Caris LeVert(24), and Jarrett Allen(20). There is a solid core of young players there that could make some noise in the future, if not begin to make waves right now.

While the Nets are clearly still in rebuild mode, this season could mean a lot if the young talent in Brooklyn begins to realize itself.

              S1G1 @ Pistons

Jackson, bigs dominate as Pistons down Nets

The Brooklyn Nets traveled to Detroit to open their season and found themselves overmatched by the firepower of the Pistons in losing, 117-104.

Reggie Jackson went on a tear early for the Pistons, and added attention to him opened up the floor for Blake Griffin, who scored 23 points in the second half and 36 for the game as he broke down Rondae Hollis-Jefferson repeatedly in one-on-one situations. Despite Griffin's increased usage in the second half, Jackson still managed to put up 38 points in the game.

For the Nets, DeAngelo Russell looked sharp, scoring 31 points and hitting two three-pointers. Jarrett Allen posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Caris LeVert was almost entirely ineffective, scoring just 5 points on 4 shots despite starting and playing 29 minutes.

                S1G2 vs Knicks

Nets fight but Knicks too strong

At the Barclays Center on Friday night, the New York Knicks defeated the Brooklyn Nets, 143-123. The win was the second straight for the Knicks, and for the Nets, their second straight loss.

For the Knicks, Kristaps Porzingis showed why many consider him a star, posting 32 points and showing all-around domination. Porzingis' play was a big reason that the Knicks were able to dominate the defensive paint even after Enes Kanter fouled out in the third quarter. Rookie Kevin Knox was impressive, as he seemingly knocked down everything in sight.

D'Angelo Russell put up 39 points for Brooklyn, and there was a point where it looked like he was going to single-handedly bring the Nets back into the game. Jarrett Allen posted his second straight double-double, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson played a huge role in establishing paint presence for the Nets late in the game.

Nets come close but fall short against Pacers

The Brooklyn Nets went to Indiana on Saturday and dropped their third straight game to start the season, but unlike the last two, this one came down to the wire.

Victor Oladipo was an unstoppable force on the offensive end for Indiana. It seemed like every time he touched the ball, two or three points were going up. Domantas Sabonis recorded a double-double, and his rebounding was especially useful with Myles Turner fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

Brooklyn played a much better game than it did in its first two, but not without faults. The Nets lost the turnover battle again, which is something that is going to ruin a team in a close game. Still, D'Angelo Russell put up 35 points, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Jarrett Allen put up double-doubles. Allen also recorded nine blocks, which was in large part why Brooklyn was able to stay in the game.

                      S1G4 @ Cavaliers

Nets balance out and bounce back in Cleveland

After dropping their first three games of the new season, the Brooklyn Nets went into Cleveland on Wednesday night and pulled out their first victory. The loss drops Cleveland to 1-3 on the season.

The Nets got contributions from all over the rotation in this game, as three starters scored 20 or more points, and all of them had double-doubles. Ed Davis also contributed significantly off the bench, grabbing 10 rebounds in 25 minutes to go with his 13 points. Jarrett Allen had a season-high 17 rebounds, seven of them coming on the offensive end. Notable for Brooklyn was shooting 32 free throws, as an aggressive game in the paint led to putting several Cavaliers in foul trouble.

Cleveland, on the other hand, did not get nearly as much contribution from anyone. Kevin Love was the only player to score 20 or more points, and three starters scored 12 or fewer points. A bigger issue, though, was the aforementioned foul trouble. While nobody fouled out of the game, Love and Tristan Thompson had four fouls each, and John Henson had another five. Having all three of their primary bigs in serious trouble made it much harder to defend inside down the stretch.

                        On Weekly Roundups

The first weekly roundup from a few posts ago was done as of the end of that week's Saturday. This is the day that the Players of the Week are announced, and thus when it seemed to make sense. However, since power rankings are all updated the next day(Sunday), it makes the most sense to do weekly updates then. In the spirit of disclosure, here are the power rankings that would have gone on the last update.

                          S1G5 @ Pelicans

Nets falter down the stretch but pull out win

The Brooklyn Nets beat the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center tonight by a score of 108-106. For most of the game, it looked like the Nets had it in hand, but New Orleans was able to fight back and take a late lead. It was the clutch play of D'Angelo Russell that won the game for Brooklyn in the final seconds, as he hit on three of four free throws in the last 30 seconds, the last two coming with four seconds left to all but ice the game.

Russell finished with a season-high 40 points on the night, carrying the Nets with more than double their next-highest scorer, Jarrett Allen. Allen played a huge role in the win though, as he pulled in 20 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson struggled, missing a ton of shots and having trouble keeping his defensive assignment most of the night.

The Pelicans fell victim to what almost everyone that's faced the Nets has dealt with this season: a deadly two-man game and foul trouble. The Nets were able to foul out two different big men, as Jahlil Okafor had to leave the game with 9 minutes left, and then Anthony Davis fouled out in the last two minutes. Before foulding out, it had looked like Davis was unstoppable, as he put up a double-double and was prematurely named Player of the Game by the broadcast team.

                            S1G6 vs Warriors

Warriors come to Brooklyn for blood, find it

Nets fans witnessed an all out assault on their team on Sunday night, as the Golden State Warriors came in and dismantled the Nets, 151-107. The Nets hung around early, with only a four point difference at the end of the first quarter. After that, though, it was clear that Golden State was just too good for Brooklyn to handle.

Golden State came out and could do almost no wrong. As a team, the Warriors shot 50% on three-pointers, and had six players in double figures. Draymond Green recorded a triple-double. Coach Steve Kerr is bound to be concerned about DeMarcus Cousins, who went down in the second quarter clutching his right arm. It is unclear whether Cousins will be able to immediately keep playing.

Brooklyn didn't play entirely bad in this one. D'Angelo Russell and Jarrett Allen put up their points, and there was one point in the game where they were able to stop the Warriors a few times in a row with a 3-2 zone defense. But a team that only can run a rotation of nine and who starts DeMarre Carroll is clearly not on the level of the de facto all star team that is Golden State. The Nets will need to respond quickly, as they immediately play again, this time against a team they have already lost to this season in the New York Knicks.
