Re: Dancing with Wolves - A Re-Do of Life After KG

The Timberwolves are streaking! They entered Friday night's contest vs the division leading Utah Jazz riding a 4 game winning streak, their longest stretch in the past 2 seasons. The Jazz posed the toughest opponent in the win streak, boasting the 3rd best record in the Western Conference and featuring a starting 5 that could see 3 or more All Stars this season.

The game did not disappoint as a back and forth battle between the division heavyweight and the young up and comer. The Wolves, lead by rookie PG Steph Curry's 35 point outburst, knocked off the Utah Jazz and moved within one game of .500.

The streak continues! After blowout victories on the road against the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks, it came down to the wire on the road against the Miami Heat, but the Wolves picked up their 4th straight road victory and 8th straight win overall.

Wolves SF Mike Miller hit the go ahead 3 point shot with 7 seconds left and after former Timberwolf Ricky Davis missed his game tying attempt, rookie PF Mo Speights put the game on ice making both of his free throw attempts after grabbing the rebound over Heat Center Shaquille O'Neal.

With this winning streak, the Wolves have climbed their way into the playoff picture as they are 2nd in the Northwest division, and 6th in the Western Conference, a half game ahead of the Denver Nuggets.

Up next for the Wolves, they complete their back to back by heading up the East coast to take on the Washington Wizards who hold the 5th seed in the East. Should they come away with a win there, the streak will be put on the line against the struggling San Antonio Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Re: Dancing with Wolves - A Re-Do of Life After KG

In what was the most entertaining game of the Timberwolves' season so far, and perhaps the NBA as a whole, the Wolves kept their win streak alive with a thrilling come from behind victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs, now losers of 8 straight, came out of the gates looking like the team that has been a staple at the top of the Western Conference for the last decade as they ran up an 11 point lead against the Timberwolves at half time. In the 3rd quarter the lead was extended to as much as 17 before the Timberwolves mounted their comeback.

Lead by the scoring outbursts of Steph Curry and Gerald Green, both of whom finished 6-13 from 3, the Wolves finished the 3rd quarter up one. This set up a back and forth 4th quarter with both teams going on runs. As time wound down it appeared that the Wolves win streak was going to come to an end before Steph Curry channeled his inner Reggie Miller.

Down 3 points with 10 seconds to play and the shot clock running down, Mike Miller missed a corner 3 and Tim Duncan grabbed the rebound. Duncan was promptly fouled and sent to the line for two free throws, both of which he made. After the 2nd made free throw the Wolves took a time out and Terry Stotts drew up an out of bounds play that got Steph Curry open for 3 to cut the game to 2 points. The Wolves promptly fouled Tony Parker on the inbounds pass to send him to the line.

Parker went 2-2 from the line to bring the lead back up to 4 points. The Wolves again took a time out and again Stotts drew up a play that freed up Steph Curry for an open 3 which he hit to cut the lead to 1 point with 2 seconds left. The Wolves missed the steal attempt on the inbounds and fouled Tony Parker sending him to the free throw line with just one second left. Parker calmly knocked down both free throws, however the Spurs made a tactical error and dropped the defense back to half court, allowing Steph Curry to get a clean look at the buzzer.

Despite the devastation they had to be feeling heading into overtime, the Spurs jumped out to a 4 point lead and maintained it for most of overtime, until with just over a minute left Al Jefferson forced a Tim Duncan miss, grabbed the rebound and moved the ball up court to Curry who wisely waited for reinforcements before kicking the ball to Mike Miller in the corner. Miller, who was 2-12 from the field and 0-7 from 3 to that point, got Bruce Bowen to bite on a pump fake, drove to the rim and was fouled as he threw down a dunk. Miller would make the and-1 free throw to cut the Spurs lead to 1 point.

Spoiler

The Wolves and Spurs would trade buckets on the ensuing possessions, setting up the Spurs with a chance to win the game. The Spurs cleared the left side of the floor and ran a pick and roll with Parker and Duncan. The Wolves guarded the play well though and forced a missed layup by Parker and Mo Speights grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with half a second to play. In the huddle, Stotts again drew up a play for Steph Curry, this time however instead of getting free off a pick for an open 3, Curry cut to the rim and got off a layup that sat on the rim and time seemed to stop before gravity took effect and the shot dropped and a sold out Target Center erupted as the Wolves pushed their win streak to 10 games.

Re: Dancing with Wolves - A Re-Do of Life After KG

The Minnesota Timberwolves kicked off the NBA Christmas slate of games with a spectacular showing at home against the Memphis Grizzlies. The Wolves, wearing their special sleeved Christmas uniforms, pushed their win streak to 13 games as they were unstoppable offensively and had the look of a team that has to be considered a threat to go deep in the playoffs.

Since the Wolves rearranged their rotation 10 games ago, moving Gerald Green into the starting lineup and moving Randy Foye to the bench while allowing Steph Curry to play point guard rather than shooting guard, the Wolves have had one of the league's top offenses. Green's microwave scoring has added another dimension to the starting lineup that makes this team such a matchup nightmare for opponents, and this scoring was on display on Christmas Eve as he scored 34 points, all in the first 3 quarters.

Not to be outdone with the national spotlight on them, Steph Curry and Al Jefferson each had a 20/20 game, Curry with points and assists and Jefferson with points and rebounds. Its this type of beat you anyway you want to defend us type production that has the Wolves future looking very bright. If teams try to go small to defend the Wolves fast break, they slow the ball down and punish the opponent down in the post with Jefferson. If teams try to double Jefferson, he's shown great passing ability to the open man, often kicking out to wide open 3 point shooters, or dumping off to cutters attacking the rim. If teams try to play the Wolves big and physical, they kill them with off ball offensive motion freeing up Mike Miller, Green and Curry, all of whom are shooting over 40% from 3 on high volume. And when the Wolves really want to give opposing coaches nightmares, they spread the floor and run a high pick and roll with Curry and Jefferson that is nearly indefensible as we saw this evening. Opponents have to defend this deadly pick and roll with 2 defenders, or they risk having wide open corner 3s rained down on them from Miller and Green. Unfortunately for those teams, no one has found an answer to stopping the Curry/Jefferson pick and roll.

Re: Dancing with Wolves - A Re-Do of Life After KG

You know that a team is rolling when a player coming off the bench and playing less than 30 minutes in a game can explode the way that Timberwolves backup shooting guard Rashad McCants did on Saturday night. McCants started the game 7/7 from 3 point land and finished the first half 8/9 from deep. With the Wolves rolling in the 2nd half, McCants saw extra playing time and his teammates were happy to feed the hot hand as McCants set a Timberwolves franchise record for points in a game with 58, surpassing the 54 points that Al Jefferson scored a year and 5 days prior. In addition he set the NBA record for 3 pointers made in a game with 13, eclipsing Donyell Marshall and Kobe Bryant's previous record of 12.

While McCants was going off on the offensive end, rookie PF Mo Speights was struggling to guard the crafty veteran Boris Diaw who repeatedly caught the young big man out of position and continually faked him out of his jock strap en route to a team high 33 points for the defending champion Phoenix Suns. The Suns were without All Star forward Shawn Marion, and it showed as they missed both his scoring punch and defensive ability en route to their 20 point loss. Good news for Suns fans is Marion is expected to play their next game against the Golden State Warriors as he is recovered from his knee injury.

Re: Dancing with Wolves - A Re-Do of Life After KG

2008 has come and gone and we are now fast approaching the halfway point in the season, which makes this a great time to take a look at our first league wide standings update.

It's very interesting to note how bunched up the teams in the middle are, nearly every team save for the Atlanta Hawks, could still make the playoffs by going on a win streak or two. Even the Atlanta Hawks, who have been extremely bad this season, have been bitten by the injury bug as Josh Smith has only played 3 games on the season after dislocating his right patella, Joe Johnson has only played 17 games after suffering tendonitis in his left knee, and to hit the trifecta their big free agency signing Rashard Lewis broke his left ankle 3 days ago and will be out for 4-6 weeks.

The biggest surprise so far this season has been the struggles of the San Antonio Spurs who have been healthy, but just don't have much outside of their 3 stars of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. If the standings hold, this will be the first time the Spurs miss the playoffs since the 1996-97 season.
