Despite losing the home opener, I've got to be happy with the way we start the season. 4-2, and the winners of a trophy that says Homewood Suites on it. We should have won against Old Dominion, but we fell apart down the stretch. The issue I see going forward is pretty simple, and that we will have games this year where we will be hot garbage on offense. We don't have much in the way of a go-to scorer right now. Harris lost his job in the starting lineup but is about to get it back. He can be very turnover prone and it's hard to make him the main scorer at the moment.

But, this team is all about defense and rebounding this year, and I'm beginning to think it could carry us to a better than .500 record again in conference, though I could see us losing a few questionable games as well with poor offense.

Recruiting Update

We have 5 scholarships to give this year, and I'm looking to fill 4 of them and probably take one to the next cycle. I want two posts and two guards and we're in desperate need of a true point guard. I'm trying to break the mold a little by not recruiting only defense and rebounding guys to UMBC. Tomaic is still an okay defender, but he's an elite shot blocker who is probably going to be the best shot blocker the second he walks on to campus. He's a real nuisance on the offensive glass and is a very good athlete for his size. He'll take a little while to develop but I think he could be very impactful at this level eventually.

Good three point shooter and solid defender that does a good job creating for others, even if he's a bit too turnover prone to play the point. I think eventually will be a very good supplemental player if we can pair him with a go to guy or two.

I'm not going to break that mold too much. He's a 7 footer, defends, blocks a few shots and gets on the glass okay too. Offensively, he's nothing reat, but he does have some skills with the ball and will pop a three every once in a while, even at 7 foot. He'll be a good defensive anchor for the American East.

So, I'm happy with the 3 I've signed so far, but none of them are good enough to be the focal point of the team, but I do think my 4th target might be, and that's 6'0" point guard Sidney Leon who can pass it, and looks like he has some scoring chops if my scout is accurate, even if his scoring numbers aren't too high. He can pass it too, which is what I'm most excited about, that he's a true point guard. We've been on him for a while and his favorite, St. Bonaventure and Indiana State have both offered which is a problem since they are both mid majors. Hopefully he sticks with us, I'm scouring for backup plans with the extra money if not.

Game 1 vs Morgan State Bears

They just took it to us in the second half. This will likely be one of the few games this year where Black gets minutes, I've decided to just embrace the defense and rebounding and Thomas Smith will get the majority of Black's minutes or preferably all of them.

But, anyways, we just got beat in the second half. Ridiculous game by Igbanu for the Bears, 10-11 from three and perfect on 5 attempts from beyond the arc.

We led by 9 at half, quickly gave that up and had to scramble back after trailing most of the last 10 minutes. Tied it a few times late, but never could take the lead. Sumner had a chance to send it OT with two late attempts at the line, but only made 1 of 2. Sumner has become the point guard, and has played well, but he is certainly limited offensively.

Finally pick up a win. Talton moved into the starting lineup in place of Harris for this one and responded with 15 points. Bailey had 12. Sehic, who I thought would lose playing time, is just too good of a rebounder not to play. He's the first big off the bench as of right now. 13 rebounds in 20 minutes is pretty solid.

Barely eek that one out thanks to a great game from Barney and a very solid game from Sumner, with 15, 7 and 5. The lead went back and forth most of the second half. At the end, Sumner hit a layup to give us a 1 point lead with about 30 seconds to go. They missed, Black made both free throws to put us up 3 with 6 seconds left, and I fouled them so they wouldn't get the 3. They hit both free throws and we won!

Despite being a 3 year starter, 16 points is now Flores' career high he picks up his first player of the game as well. Harris scores 11 points in 17 minutes, and he just has to play more than 17 minutes, that's a bad job on my part.

Winthrop is not a good team, though. SE Oklahoma State wasn't half bad.

We were down big early and 10 at half, but we survived their hot start and slowly overcame them. Harris only got 17 minutes again this game, but this time it was because he had 3 first half fouls in just 4 minutes of playing. Barney with an efficient 11 points. Smith has taken over most of Black's minutes and had 13 points and 4 assists on 6-9 shooting, I won't expect that though. He is a good defender though, much better than Black.

Solid month, and a 2-1 start in conference play is hard to complain too much about. Our defense has been stellar all year long and I really think we should be able to put the clamps on people in the America East most games. Still haven't had a scorer really assert themselves. Black at times is tremendous, but has games where he is hard to rely on. I was hoping for more production out of Harris this year and it just hasn't happened. Barney has also been a disappointment, and is just 9-43 from three this year.

I like the looks of him, and I guess my scout does as well. Solid passing numbers and seems to be able to attack the basket some. Doesn't shoot the three much, and his scoring averages in high school make me think he won't be a go-to guy even at this level, but he should provide some productive point guard play nonetheless. Happy with the 4 freshmen I signed.

Game 7 at Bucknell Bison

We just couldn't hit shots, and if it wasn't for a great 24 minutes out of Black, we really would have been sunk. 10-43 from players who weren't Damarion Black. 2-11 from Barney, 1-9 from Harris.

Game 8 at Farleigh Dickinson Knights

Very fortunate to win this one, we trailed for pretty much the entire the game before taking the lead for good with 1:02 left after Flores completed a 3 point play and then we managed to hold on from there. Another really bad shooting game, but we got lucky with a bad FDU performance from the line. Flores was a perfect 4-4 from the field and had 9 rebounds to go along with it. It was FDU's first loss of the year at the time.

Finally able to win in a blow-out fashion and even get the deep backups and walk ons some time. Harris had 18 points in 19 minutes while Talton came up with 16 off the bench. It was a close game at half, we led by just 4, but we took it to them in the second half and ran away with an easy victory.

The offense has stepped up a notch and with our defense still solid, we had a very successful month and going into February we have a 9-2 conference record and lead the conference by a game. Barney and Harris have both started to become effective offensive options from the wing, and Bailey has scored at a higher rate since conference play began. On the downside, Armon Talton had a pretty bad injury and will miss the rest of the season unless we're playing in some tournament deep in March. He's a tough loss, as he's the best three point shooter on the team. Without him, Black and T. Smith will see quite a few more minutes and maybe even the long forgotten relic that is Vic Smith could see time in emergency situations.

Our defense really has been tremendous this year, and our defensive rebounding has been at or near the top in the nation all year long. So, we've been able to maximize possessions, and when we have a few guys get hot, we're going to take care of anyone in this weak conference, though we are quite a bit better as a conference than we were last year.

SE Oklahoma State who is receiving votes is a team we beat in our early season tournament. They are kind of single handedly keeping our RPI at a decent number.

Recruiting Update

I thought I wasn't going to use my last scholarship, but I scouted a ton of 1 star guys over 6'7", seeing if I could find a wing guy that could maybe play the 4, and I think I found one in 6'9" Timothy Jensen. He's ranked #1431 and it is possible my scout is just wrong about him, but he can legit shoot the three, shooting 41% on 5 attempts a game in high school and my scout thinks he can play really good post D, even if his rebounding is pretty lackluster. So, I'll take a shot on him, maybe he'll take a redshirt his first year.

NJIT probably has the best overall offensive back court in the league, but we limited their guys for the most part, and we had 5 with double figures between 12-17 points. When Harris and Barney are both hitting shots, we're tough to beat.

Game 16 vs Howard Bison

A quick non conference jaunt that did not go well. We trailed virtually the entire game before coming back at the end to force OT, only to get blitzed by 8 points in said OT. Barney and Bailey (just now noticing that's close to Barnum and Bailey) both had strong games, but for one of the few times our defense didn't come with us, and it cost us. We also lose Zecevic for about a week and a half due to injury in this game.

A nice bounce back victory, though this is the game we lost Talton. Harris with an aggressive 23 points to go with 5 rebounds. Bailey did well enough from the free throw line to snag a double double. We went 25-31 from the free throw line, which is about as good as we've been capable of the last few years. Smith and Black both have pretty heavy loads to carry without Talton and they both responded well in this game.

Stony Brook misses a last second shot, and we manage to hold on, even though we kept giving them chances to take the victory from us. Despite being a major part of our 9-21 team FT performance, Bailey had 14 and 11, while Sumner and Harris both had efficient games.

Game 19 at Southern New Hampshire Penmen

Not much to say here, our defense absolutely crushed them. They were 14-49 from the field, shot just 2 free throws and turned the ball over 19 times. Our offense was nothing special, but we got to the line quite a bit and only had to eclipse 31 points, which wasn't hard. That was kind of a freak game to be sure, but when I'm able to play Smith, Sumner and Barney at the same time, we've got very solid defenders at each position and that's a rare thing at this level.

Game 20 at New Hampshire Wildcats

Harris blew up for 31 points. Barney was 7-8 from the field and had 20 points. New Hampshire shot better than 50%, which has been a rarity this season, but luckily we go 11-22 from three and it's enough to put us over the top on the road. These are the kinds of games from Harris I'll be expecting more of the new two years.

Game 21 vs NJIT Highlanders

This would have been an exciting game to watch. A ton of lead changes and a lot of made baskets. We actually shoot better than I ever could have imagined from the line 20 of 22, but NJIT makes 26 free throws and has success inside on us. Smith hit a three at the buzzer to make it a 1 point game, and we trailed by 1-3 most of the last 5 minutes. Black had 29 points in just 24 minutes on 10-13 shooting. He shoots a ton, and he's had some stretches where he'll go 0-4 in 3 minutes. But, sometimes those guys get hot and carry you, and he certainly did there for a stretch. It's just too bad his defense is so bad. He'll get playing time regardless though, we just don't have much depth and I don't want to play a worse version (to me) of him in Vic Smith.

A week into February, it looked like we were a shoe-in for the America East regular season championship and 20+ wins. But, we fell apart a bit offensively the last 6 games, losing 4 of them. A 1 point loss at home to New Hampshire and a 1 point loss on the road at Albany were the worst to deal with, if we win either one of them, we win the regular season championship. We go into the conference tournament as the 2nd seed, and hopefully we can recover and make it back to the NCAA tournament.

Game 24 at Stony Brook Sea Solves

We win in OT and it's a miracle we win that game. Flores hit a shot with 4 seconds left to tie it, and I stupidly had auto foul on from the previous possession, I send them to the line to shoot two and he misses both of them, and then we blitz them in the OT. Bailey put in 24 points. Barney had 16, 11 and 6, while Sumner went 2-12 but did okay at the line to get 14 points. Sumner just shoots too much.

Game 26 vs New Hampshire Wildcats

Just a really bad loss that saw us blow a ten point 2nd half lead and send UNH on a never ending parade of free throws in the second half, as we had 30 team fouls to their 19, and on our home court to boot. They free throw us to death down the stretch, shooting just 4 threes all game. Harris had a really strong game, but nobody else really stepped up. We beat them 8 times out of 10, I think.

Nice bounce back win, A lot of efficient performances, and like usual did a strong job on the defensive glass and broke away from them in the second half after leading by just 2 at the break. Sumner was 3-4 from beyond the arc, which really helps out his putrid shooting percentage from there.

Another strong shooting performance form Sumner, 3-3 from beyond the arc. If you take away the 6-7 performance from the last two games, he'd be at 18% for the season. Harris had a very solid game as well, and was a rebound away from a double double. Hartford was overmatched on the glass, with just one offensive rebound the whole game.

Game 29 at Albany Great Danes

Like the UNH game, this is just a bad loss. We couldn't hit any shots, everybody but Bailey struggled shooting the ball. Thankfully, Albany struggled at the line, and we never could get over the hump, really the whole game, they just kept us at about 2-6 points the whole game. This game would have clinched the America East regular season title, instead it goes to NJIT on the tiebreaker.

Game 20 at Central Connecticut State Blue Devils

We had one last non-con game to play as a tune up before the conference tournament, and it didn't go well. It was all tied at half time, but a 1-9 Harris performance and misses by several guys down the stretch cost us a chance at 20 regular season wins. It's hard to get too amped up for these late season non-con games, but it would have been nice to have 20 wins in the bank before the conference tournament.
